In this video I talk about three simple passing plays you can use to get your tight end involved in the passing game. I know some of us use a tight end in our spread formation - either as an H-back or on the line tight end - and we have a difficult time coming up with some passing plays.
These plays are simple to install, simple for your quarter back to read, and great for picking up yardage in the Spread Offense.

Hey Coach, Great stuff keep it coming....One thing we do similar to your Y Corner. We have found that the "scissors" look on Y corner lends itself to an "exchange" with pattern read defenders. So we have gone away from that(in those cases) and now run (what we call a J route) from #1 on Y side to hold the corner down for a split second to get the Y Corner open. I love the Hitch idea on the open side we have been running double digs which are fine but hitches are a nice changeup.

On the Y flag play you have your QB read the Y flag, then the R snag then the TB flare? I have a few things I need to help you with if you will read this and not be offended or think I am trolling you. First is that you should have a QB read left, middle, right or right, middle, left on all concepts. It is a consistent way to setup your passing concepts that make it so much easier to teach all your concepts as it doesn't change only quick game and five step drops change the drop and the quick game is read either presnap softest defender or inside out and with slow feat in a catch right left drop. Eample. On this concept it allows him to drop into his stance while looking at his first receiver and hitch to throw if he is open. The hitch adjusts his rythmn from the drop and aids in timing. If he reads window or alley closed he hitches to find the next progression and reads the alley or window and on this receiver he can judge his guy vs their guy if it's man or read if the #2 is being held up but is breaking free and he anticipates he will be open, QB buzzes his feet to maintain rythmn and timing so he can throw the ball as soon as possible. If the receiver is not going to be able to get open, hitch to find #3 then hitch to throw. If you can get a QB to play with good eyes and fast feet, to get the ball out of his hands and into the hands of the fast kids by throwing with authority he will have success and that success will lead to more success. I know you are partial to the spread coaches and might not want to hear from a guy who runs the west coast spread much, but, most of the concepts we use come from Bill Walsh as does the QB play and reads.

the formation 2x2 11 personnel works well with play action vs 2 hi MOFO (mid of field open) with TE seam. Stretch motion from the shotgun, base the BSDE and read the BSLB.

In short yardage situation where you know a defense will almost go into man coverage with single high safety to stop a first down, try running 9 - Smash concept. Have your (L) or (R) run a 5 yard hitch with mandatory outside release and instead of having your (F) or (Y) run the Corner/Flag route have them run a 9 route with outside release tight roping down the sideline for a big score.

A levels concept on the back side of Y stick is also a great way to take advantage of the LBs driving on the stick. I also like running smash from a trey set (trips to the Y) and have the Y run a seam. It causes big problems for cover 2 and 3.

Coach, Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch my video. It means a lot to me. You're right, Levels is a get tag to Stick. Do you have your QB read the Middle Line Backer for whether he will go to the Stick side or the Levels side? That's something I've been thinking about doing, but don't know how to teach it good enough. The Smash out of trips is what Mouse Davis called Hook. Great play.

Exactly. One thing I like to do in order to make the QB decision easier is to send the RB on full speed motion to the flat pre snap. If the LB flows then my QB knows the high low backside will be open. If the LB doesn't go then I have him read the stick as normal. Coaching in Poland means I never really know what the defensive reaction will be post snap, so I don't have him just automatically throw to the back when we have numbers to the stick side. I will run levels different ways as well depending on who we want to target, so sometimes I'll have our backside #1 be the shallow and sometimes it'll be our #2.

Enjoyed the video. I'm in college right now but hope to start a career in education and coaching at the high school level. I've always been a fan of spread option offenses such as that of Auburn and Georgia Southern for example. My only critique of spread offenses is the extremely sped up tempo. While I realise it can be very effective in wearing out opposing defenses, I often find that it hurts your own defense just as much if not more in some cases. As a coach with experience, do you find it necessary to use the tempo to run your offense? Do you just use it in certain situations? Or can you avoid using it if at all possible while still executing the spread principles effectively? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hey Coach (Yes you are a coach), Thanks for taking time out of your day to watch my videos. It means a lot to me. I think tempo is the greatest weapon an offense has. It forces the defense to get out of their comfort level. It makes the defensive coordinator, who isn't used to calling plays at a rapid pace, confused and frustrated. That frustration seeps into his players, and they start to play undisciplined. I've never understood the argument that tempo hurts defenses. Have you ever heard of an Offensive Coordinator complain about the defense going out onto the field and creating a turnover? I haven't. Not once have I said to my guy in the box, "Dammit. We just went on a seven play drive. Why did the defense have to force that fumble on the first play? Our guys need a break." Defensive coaches complain about tempo because it makes their stats look bad. The best defensive coordinators know that the more times the offense has the ball the more chances they have to score. The more an offense scores then the more likely their team wins. The more their teams win then the more their coaching stock goes up. So they embrace tempo and change their outlook on stats from points per game/passing yards per game/rushing yards per game to increasing turnovers/sacks/tackle for loss. Getting beat 7-6 is the same to me as getting beat 70-69. In both instances the offense didn't score enough points. Butt the 70-69 is a hell of a lot more fun to watch and coach in than the 7 to 6 score.

Thanks for responding and I can't say that I disagree, I just try to seep in as much as I can from as many credible sources as I can seeing as most high school coaches from where I live either run the wing t or the power I and would consider it heresy if you were to stray from that philosophy.

That's what we see where I am at as well. I find that most coaches aren't comfortable with giving their 15, 16, 17 year old quarterback the freedom of making choices within the offense. That's why they are going to go to some kind of running offense. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I just enjoy throwing the ball and going fast. I'm lucky enough to work for a head coach that allows me to run that style of offense.

Hey coach, quick question on Shallow. Do you ever run it out of 3x1 and turn it into a Drive concept? Does that change the reads? ... maybe it could be your next video topic :)

Hey Coach, We've toyed around with it but never called it in a game. This Spring we are putting in the Run and Shoot Choice route. Which is similar to the Drive concept. And I will definitely do a video on it. Thanks for the suggestion.

when you run shack from a 3x1 set. do u have the R/L or F run the shallow and then the other run a dig. for example trips Rt f Shack f runs shallow while L runs dig. while the R & Y run verticals, or do u just run a drive concept on the trips side.

Coach McKie if we have trips we do 2 things. I'm assuming u have your Y as the #2 receiver and Your F as the #3 recover. The First way is to run L/R shallow(Depending on Trips Direction) or F Shallow. They Run the shallow opposite L/F Runs Dig. Second way is running a drive or Follow Concept. Y Drive - Y runs Shallow, F Runs Dig. All other Receiver runs verticals. the ones above were just examples. we basically have different types of shallows. we are going to tag any recover to run the shallow and then the type of shallow will give other receivers what type of route there running we can tag any reciver to run a shallow, including our RB in empty. cross - next WR inside or across runs Dig under - opposite SE from shallow runs dig shallow - next WR outsidde Runs Dig all other recivers run verticals. they are all shallow cross concepts for the receivers and quarterbacks but it looks ultra confusing to the defense.

If the defense is playing cover 2, the cornerback should be in the flat so that would not work.

I'm not trying to be dick or act at all like I'm a NFL COACH but I am a man who's been coaching since 16 (while I was playing rb for a state championship HIGHSCHOOL) QB'D by RYAN DAY actually (OHIO STATE HEAD COACH was my starting qb that's a different story all together 💯 😆 but on the first play that worked because the middle lbs blitzed so you called the perfect counter play but with a bad defense with ok lbs that play isn't working good teams communicate and that's such a simple concept but it worked great there so 👏👏👏👏... second play same thing and the third play the were in a 5-2 defense for some reason while you were in pass formation lol that's a risky play call backed up in your own red zone against a regular 3-4 or 4-4 or cover 2 js but hey keep working at it im not calling you out or anything im just saying what I'm seeing bud

On play one the defense didn't adjust properly for pass play 3-4 is a killer in high school football if you have the right lbs and dbs but hey again it worked and worked well so SALUTE to you ... on second play Same thing basically the safety and lbs didn't communicate right the safety should have moved up eyeing the safety while lb eyeing rb lb should have shaded him 3-5 yards then pads him off to safety... but all I'm saying is hard because I coach like I play chess I call plays to to set up other plays anyway keep doing what you're doing 💯
