This video I overview three simple details people often miss with their guard retention.
1. Hip Angling to keep your feet in alignment with the direction your opponent is trying to pass.
2. Keeping Shoulder Blades Off The Mat
3. Proper use of feet on hips or upper body depending on opponents posture.

Me, too. I hate people flanking my open guard…. Happens almost every time I roll, and I know there must be a better way…

So far my guard has been pretty good as it's my main focus at this level. Personally trying to build an excellent defense. And once I have that my ill start to work on being more offensive. This was very good information

Do you have any videos on countering or stoping "floating " type of passes( leg pummeling) when you play butterfly or any advice? I have been struggling with people that pass my butterfly in this manner
@anthonyvanadia5489
@anthonyvanadia5489 2 года назад
Not exactly sure what type of pass you're asking about, but a good general principle is immediately break the grips your opponent gets. Especially if these grips are on your legs when you're playing butterfly. Having your legs controlled and shutting down your hooks is what kills a butterfly guard. So as soon as they grab your pants, break that grip. Or divert their hand before it even gets to your pant leg and turn it into your own grip. If they're bodylock passing, shooting for underhooks as soon as they go for the bodylock. that way you will still have some control and can try to elevate/create some distance. If they get a full bodylock and you have no underhooks its gonna be rough to maintain guard. Hopefully this helps a little

@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
A lot of people haven’t seen the original content and it gets buried in algorithm so I do repeat videos often , but I’m always updating my positions too so I usually am adding in a lot of corrections if I revisit a position.
@ModernEdgeFitness
@ModernEdgeFitness 2 года назад
So in the first concept with always keeping one shoulder off the ground, doesn’t this contradict utilizing the far side elbow to post on the ground when your opponent is trying to turn your hips? I personally use my elbow to dig into the mat to creat a structure so my opponent can’t turn my hips away. Is this something that is just based on certain situations? Thanks
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 2 года назад
Great question! Actually it doesn’t it’s seems like it should but you are absolutely capable of having that shoulder blade off mat while at the same time hitting floor with your elbow. Also when you already turned in a bit the elbow on floor won’t matter as much because you have already turned in, in the cases where you get flattened or turned away a little it will matter a little more to help you in the fight to get turned back in.
