Guard Retention Technique That Will Completely Change Your Guard

The forward/reverse shrimp is in my opinion one of the most important tools for guard retention, yet it is also commonly not taught or misunderstood. When your hips get turned to face away from your opponent it becomes very difficult to retain your guard as you can no longer loop with your outside leg or even from on your opponent, the forward shrimp when done properly allows you to both create distance from your opponent and also re-center your hips so you can engage your legs back into the fight. This technique has been a pivotal part of my guard defense and I use it all the time. It is a much better choice to the other popular choices of turtling or doing the gramby roll. If you like this video check out my other guard retention videos in my playlist.

I've been preaching this style of guard retention to my training partners and really believe in it! Most people I see are using the traditional frame and shrimp like crazy, rather than the forward shrimp and recompose with the outside leg. I'm starting to see some success with this and hope to be the example in my gym! Thanks man!

Thank you Jonathan for this. It amazes me that I have trained at so many bjj schools and the instructors have students mindlessly reverse shrimp down the mat but not once do they share with you when to use the reverse shrimp.

I usually do the gramby roll in this situation, but it doesn't always work against more experienced training partners. I end up getting stacked and defending it. I will definitely use your approach which is somehow similar to your side control escape video that has improved my game a lot! 🙏

I like your fast style of explaining. 5 minute video made me realize my guard retention sucks, I turtle when I shouldn't AND showed me how to actually forward shrimp properly. keep up the good work.

The most accurate title ever! This has absolutely changed my guard and the success I have retaining it at the gym. I am a white belt and now I feel a lot more confident when I'm being threatened with a pass by blue belts and even purple belts. This was taught very well.

great breakdown. I had trouble understanding the forward schrimp (in live sparring) from one of your early side control escapes, but i like seeing this one utilized from someone doing the quick guard pass attempt and how to use the forward schrimp for guard retention! will be drilling this soon :)

Thank you so much for making me understand the forward shrimp. I'm learning alot from your videos as it's explaining to me why I'm doing what I'm doing since I'm also a long lanky guy that tries playing spider guard and pretty much has a similar style like yours though I'm only a blue belt that only came back after 20 plus year break lol

I never did understand the forward shrimp drills, or even the movement really. Always felt like a huge struggle... probably because in the drill the goal is to move forward to the end of the mats. This makes more sense, as the goal isn't to move forward but to simply move the hips in whatever direction benefits

How do you prevent from the opponent taking north-south right after you turn your lower body away from them? It's what happens a lot to me where I do this motion but I don't have enough space to throw in my knee/frames due to them closing in on the upper body space that I just presented to them

Hi Jon, another outstanding video. I’m too lazy to do social media but might have to if you post a lot of stuff on IG. I have two asks for future videos on this topic that you cover better than anybody. (1) can you please explain a bit more why you say you use the forward shrimp more than the traditional one? Is it just more effective? If so, why is it more effective? Or is it Personal preference? (2) please please make a video of you practicing guard retention against maybe a solid purple belt level. I know it can be hard to narrate over it but maybe you could slow mo some important points in the guard retention roll and perhaps add a little text. For example, slow the part where you actually do a forward shrimp to recompose or other techniques so we can see how you use these techniques against resistance and possibly even combine techniques to recompose your guard. A similar video doing side control escapes and recompose would be awesome. Thank you so much for all you’ve done for your fans and the jiu jitsu community!

To answer your question, to perform a normal shrimp you have to be facing your opponent. In this situation you are facing away so use the forward shrimp. Bjj scout has a video on knee cut pass which addresses this if you're still unsure

3:30 Elbow should not be between knee and opponent, it should be on the inside connected to your own ribs, protected from arm bar and supports the knee shield. Leaving your arm out vulnerable like is a huge flaw.
@JonThomasBJJ
@JonThomasBJJ 4 года назад
Mochi Mochi Keeping your elbow on the inside is a huge mistake here it’s going to be too easy for the person to work their way into your elbow knee space. I’m actually gonna make a video on that it’s such a common mistake in guard retention, this separates your upper body from your lower body and makes you much easier to pass. I have never had someone pull my arm out for an arm bar in this situation I have worked it with multiple black belt world champions and in competition at the highest level. You might need to keep your elbow tighter. Send me a video of you trying the technique and I can see what mistake you are making. You can message me on messenger or IG.

@@JonThomasBJJ I just watched your guard retention (elbow on the outside or inside),I misunderstood mochi mochi's comment, I do the same elbow on the outside when playing open guard ...I tuck my elbow inside and connect it to my ribs if they already open the space between my knees to my armpit.
@mochimochi2749
@mochimochi2749 4 года назад
JonThomasBJJ good luck with your arm being taken then. You’re leaving your arm unprotected and your knee shield unsupported. Hope your viewers use common sense and see this glaring mistake and dont dismiss it due to fanboyism. Critical thinking is important. Besides that, Im really enjoying your channel. Keep it up.

Umm wtf is this...??? You contradicted yourself so many times in your “instructional” video. “You use the forward shrimp motion to then invert on your neck and roll in front of the person and center”... umm no! They would just grab your pants, heels, ankles and gently swing you back around. The best advice you gave was utilizing your limbs, hands and feet to connect and utilize the standing persons force to generate momentum and swing yourself back to “center” How about a technical stand up...never lay on the ground with your legs open. 🤣 Btw if my opponents ever got rotated to the point where their center line was more than 30 degrees off center with my own, and they attempted to utilize the far leg to “center” themselves, best believe the moment that foot connects to my body, I’m grabbing it, whipping the person in the opposite direction and using your “diving head technique” to get the north south... 🤣🤣🤣 Wow...
