just jeph---I seen them on the big screen and when they are together like in this scene, you can see the resemblance in them. Shemp, Moe, and Curly. Brothers.
Funny you should say that in comment to one clip where Shemp does copy Curly- that bark: "Ruff! Ruff!" That was pure Curly. But otherwise agree, Shemp was a great comedian who made his own way in movies and the stage before returning to The Stooges when they needed him. Shemp was in the Joe Palooka films and The Bank Dick with WC Fields, among many others.
@@michaelfitzmichael3226 The short was probably written for Curly, although the barking dog thing was something all three Howard brothers did (Shemp also did it during his solo career).
I'm 33. My dad made me a stooge fan when I was like 5 watching shorts on vhs. Curly was my favorite and when a shemp short come on I always was unhappy because I loved curly. Now that I'm older I really appreciate all the shemp shorts.
Seriously, that's a sign of Stooge "Maturity", for lack of a better word. And the REAL Stooge fan also learns to appreciate Joe Besser, who was hilarious in his own way. It wasn't his fault that Columbia studio's budget for short subject comedy was hitting rock-bottom at the time; they all did their professional best, despite the challenges. But I stop at Joe De Rita; he's just not really funny LR
@@HassoBenSoba; you summed it up perfectly. No one I know of ever really liked Shemp. Even The first curly replacement was better than Shemp. Moe & Larry's eyes got really baggy in later years, but, that's life - all a part of age-ing. I guess they didn't have quality level plastic surgery back then. Back when, even actors & actresses aged gracefully / bravely. My brothers and I would see the beginning of a later 3 stooges and cry out in disappointment: "oh, no... it's " a SHEMP ( episode ) ! "
Not sure who’s really at fault here. Shemp for not paying attention when he dumped the flour in or Moe for putting his head in the bowl the second Shemp put the flour in.
Clean how can that be when they're throwing flower at each other cream pies and cakes, squirting oil, getting squirt on by oysters or falling in mud. Or going through plaster walls, semi electrocuting themselves. Man they must have the healthiest dry cleaning bill and will of Hollywood..lol always great every skit they make even though they copy from either Laurel and Hardy or in Abbott and Costello. There . you see Larry hanging the romaine lettuce to dry just like Abbott did in the episode called the efficiency experts.. always so funny and imaginative thanks for posting this clip appreciate it take care stay well throughout this pandemic
With Moe as a defined leader and Curly and Shemp filling the roles as the big personality and main target for Moe's aggression, Larry always provided that middle ground. He served as the voice of reason as far as Stooges go, being not quite as dumb as Curly or Shemp, but not as smart as Moe, once again smart as far as Stooges go. Therefore I think Larry is important to the Stooges, and without Larry I'm not so sure Moe would work so well with both Curly and Shemp. Granted I'd love to have seen it as well and I'm sure it would've been excellent because almost everything Stooges is and the Howard Brothers are all great.
0:48 I think this bit supposed to be cut in the finished short as seen that Shemp and Moe shakes hand, meaning the act is done, but Shemp still continue to 'fight' with Moe, so maybe that's why they keep it in the final short lol.
This is, believe it or not, the very first Three Stooges bit I ever saw. When I was a little kid, about 5-6 or so, my local UHF station used to show commercials in the Summer for their Fall lineup, one of which was for the Stooges, and this was the bit they showed. I'd never seen them before (I mostly only watched cartoons), and I was like, "Who are these guys?!? These guys are GREAT!" So when the time came in the Fall, I started watching & I've been a lifelong Stooge fan ever since (and we're talking over 50 years now...)
How about that? Out of all 190 shorts, the UHF station showed that same clip. (I love the contrived dialogue that sets-up this kitchen scene...Shemp: "Moe, I got news fer' ya..you forgot to buy the cake.. Larry: "AND the salad".. Moe: "Why did you let me forget!" (SLAP!) My first Stooge encounter was in a Theater in Hammond, Indiana during the summer of 1958 (I was 7 at the time). I saw Joe's "Space Ship Sappy" in its original release! And though I love Joe, this is one of his worst...and I didn't care for it at all (especially the over-used stock footage of the Komodo dragon, which we had seen in other cheapie Dino flicks). Fast-forward a couple of months..Monday, October 6, 1958...the STOOGES' DEBUT on local Chicago TV...WGN, with host Carl Greyson (a rather sobering, dignified staff announcer) and his side-kick "Chatter the Chimp!" Extremely lame on-camera skits, etc. And the very first short they showed was Shemp's "ALL GUMMED UP!"...and I have a scan of the old newspaper TV schedule that confirms my memory on this. WHAT A GREAT DAY for humanity~!!! LR
I couldn’t even tell you when I first saw the Stooges. Growing up they were always on TV. My dad, uncles, grandpa all watched them. I do remember crying when I got old enough to realize the Stooges, most of the Little Rascals, Abbot and Costello, L & H, etc were long dead. When you’re a young child and you see them on TV it doesn’t occur to you (or at least it didn’t to me) that those movies were 50 years old. But I’ve always loved those old comedians. Chaplin too, but to a lesser degree. I have to be in the mood to watch silent films.
@@Vichedges I'm somewhat fortunate in that regard, because when I was a kid, Moe Howard was still alive & I had the opportunity to watch his appearances on the Mike Douglas show, in which he shared his memories of Stooging over the decades, talking about his brothers Shemp & Curly, how he first met Larry & all the rest. Moe finished off his appearances with detailed & specific explanations/demonstrations of the correct way to throw a pie. (They started out using a dept. store mannnequin as the target, but eventually Moe, Mike Douglas & the other guests eventually ended up just throwing the pies at each other, in true Stooges fashion.) 😊
It's pretty lame, but obviously Moe noticed some sort of "imperfection" in the bowl...something that needed to be examined at close range and scraped off.
Shemp, like Larry and little brother Curley knows what's about to happen if you cross Moe, INTENTIONALLY OR NOT: RETALIATION AND THEN ADMINISTER DISCIPLINE!!!!
I know that Shemp was originally in the Stooges when they were working with Ted Healy, but I still prefer his brother Curly Howard in The Three Stooges film shorts.
@@MrPGC137 "You call that GOOD..??? Get a load of ME spouting Shake-spearhh!" Also, the guy in the final party scene (not Brian O'Hara, who is the balding guy with the moustache)..the OTHER GUY with the black hair...is Danny Lewis, JERRY LEWIS' real-life father. Jerry was so popular at the time, and his father was a minor vaudeville comedian, so they figured "What the heck?..Let's use him in the scene!" But Danny looks entirely inept as a performer, very amateurish. Somebody recalled that he couldn't get the hang of the Feathers-routine, and kept breathing them IN instead of coughing them out. Now THERE'S a real Stooge! ALSO-- Nick Barker was played by actor Ned Glass ("..and these boys are hilarious!") who you might recall as the mooch "Teddy Oberman" from the Honeymooner's "Pal o' Mine" episode and as DOC in the Academy -Award winning best picture of 1961 "West Side Story". LR
@@HassoBenSoba Ned Glass also played the kidnap-victim in the classic "Nutty But Nice," one of my all-time favourite Stooge films. (Curly's yodelling routine in that film is just one of the many highlights for me.)
