Thanks for the great videos / tips. Just got my setup from EWO’s and have been tying my knots and getting everything ready to go. Plan on practicing after some morning hunts over the next week or two before actually putting it to use.

Nice tips, something else I learned the hard way this year with using that particular tether locker, make sure it is not on the top side of the rope (even if it is behind the scaffold knot). I guess when I pulled I basically dug the quick link into the tree by rolling it over on itself and got it really jammed. Had to use a climber to retrieve it lol. Never had that problem again once I made sure the tether locker was on the bottom side.

Using the one stick instead of looking for a stick is a great idea, thank you!

Great tips. I’ve been chopping down the tree to retrieve the rope.

Great tips!! Couple weeks ago I busted the carabiner (non climbing rated) attached to my dyna-glide retrieval rope in half. I didn't loosen my girth hitch and didn't move my line below the crotch of a limb. I also couldn't move out at an angle from the base of the tree because of thick thorns around the tree at the angle I needed to pull. All this while in the dark with deer bedded 30yds away. Had to come back the next day to get my rope! Learned the hard way. Also switched to a small quick link on my dyna-glide just in case, that perfect storm of events ever happens again.

That a good tip with the tether locker. I fought for 10 minutes to get the dang plastic piece out of a crook last weekend. started putting it on the tag end of my scaffold hitch to keep that from happening.

Thanks for these tips. Retrieving the rope has been the only real struggle I've had learning one stick and saddle hunting.

Nice tips. I really need to switch from paracord to dynaglide… Do you have a stopper knot at the end of your rappel rope? I do and it’s been a PITA because the stopper knot won’t pass through the quick link. So if I carry 30’ of rope and hunt at 25’, I have to get the rappel/tether to “shimmy” down the tree a good 10’ before I can reach the quick link and undo it
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild 2 года назад
No, you do NOT want a stopper knot at the end of your rappel rope!! It has to pull on through the quick link without obstruction... I did splice a length of amsteel through it to make a continuous loop though, so I can use my rappel rope to raise and lower my bow -- one less thing to have to carry into the woods. I show this around the 34:00 mark of this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5iDtdKPyh8M.html

@@StaggsintheWild thank you. I must have missed that part of the video. I’ve been considering removing the stopper knot for this reason. Definitely doing it now

The paracord is the most annoying thing when it comes to one stick climbing. It will tingle with itself, with your other ropes, your body, the branches and debris on the floor. It also stretches while pulling your main rope, and if you climb trees that have rough bark, it's a lot more difficult to retrieve your rappelling rope.
@StaggsintheWild

Exactly!! When I see someone suggest paracord to a newbie asking about a gear list to get started, I just wanna reach through the screen and give them a good shake, lol.

How do you like the Ohm locker over wire tie? I was thinking of giving it a try.
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild 2 года назад
I like it better than gear ties for sure; if you forget to undo it (provided you DiD clip into it!), you can still pull it down with it attached.

Does a triangle quicklink come out easier or harder than an oval?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild Год назад
I’ve never heard from anyone that one comes out easier than the other … however, I have had people message me that the triangle links can have issues occasionally with threads sticking. I’ve never had that issue with my Petzl oval.

I killed a deer recently and after rappelling down I wasn’t thinking and forgot to take my safeguard/carabiner off my rope. The rope was pulling fine till it got to that point. I couldn’t figure out was going on for a minute there. Pulled the tag end back down and realized what I did. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂

Yessir! Do this often enough and you’ll forget to do it at some point… we’ve all been there! That’s why I knew to include it in this segment! 🙋‍♂️😁

I see you use your rappel rope as a tether. Ive seen some one stickers using the rappel as a safety rope instead. Advantages and Disadvantages?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild 2 года назад
I assume you mean as a lineman’s belt? I guess you could do that, but then you’d have to thread it back through your lineman’s belt loops snd ensure it was tight before undoing your tether … with a separate lineman’s belt that’s permanently affixed via girth hitch to one side of my saddle, that’s just one less variable to have to worry about when up in a tree navigating around limbs. If you go back to one of my very recent videos called “What do you do with all that rope?”, you’ll see exactly how I set everything up … to me, it’s the simplest way and I’m not second-guessing if anything is hooked up properly.

You guys not using a quick link when using the ohm ?
@StaggsintheWild
@StaggsintheWild 2 года назад
Yes. The Ohm has an amsteel "tail" with a spliced-in loop that I girth-hitch around the rappel rope right behind the quick link... that keeps me from losing it and keeps it at the ready for the next trip... then I clip the Ohm on the rope that feeds through the quick link just below it to keep the whole girth hitch from falling/sliding down the tree. I actually have an upcoming video on tether locks soon, and will feature the Ohm prominently in it.
