I’ve listened to Thrice since about 2003, seen them live about 4 times, and also consider them my favorite band of all time. It’s all about the journey because they have made songs and albums that have changed the way I listen to music, and they’ve also made some stuff I didn’t care for , such as Palms. But overall, if you’ve hung with them for 20 years you’ve rolled through some amazing music with them. Knowing all that though, if I just heard them for the first time, I don’t know if I’d immediately be hooked either. I do enjoy this song though and hope this album is a return to form.
The first time I saw Thrice, they were the supporting band for Face to Face and Midtown. After seeing their set, I immediately picked up their album “The Illusion of Safety” that night at their merch table.
Started listening to them around 2006 after seeing the music video for "Image of the Invisible". I can completely understand both of your opinions. I once saw a comment about Thrice that read something like "Good old Thrice. Never giving you exactly what you want, but always giving you something that will broaden your musical horizons." That's been my experience with them over the years. The music keeps changing and evolving, but I keep coming back because it's Thrice.
He has such a haunting voice. My old favs are Hurricane, Broken Lungs - Live, The Long Defeat, Stay With Me, Black Honey, Open Water. Wasn't a fan of the latest album either.
"the journey" is so accurate. i was introduced to them 2 months before Illusion of Safety came out, they've been my favourite since. Listening to Johnny speak about them is eerily similar to how I talk about them.
It is absolutely the journey with thrice .. they are without a doubt my all time favorite band .. but I’ve been listening to them since 05 .. that being said every time the come out with a new album I’m like “ ok they finally did it they finally made an album I don’t like” after a few run thrus of the album I understand the direction and grow to love it ..
Artist in the ambulance is by far their best, been a fan since warped tour 2003, seeing them with Bayside in June, this will be the 10th time seeing them live and they are amazing live. A lot of bands do not sound good live but thrice is cd quality
Also been on the Thrice journey. Also my favourite band. The Artist in the Ambulance was their first album i heard. Banger. Paper Tigers? Stare At The Sun? COME ON! Even The Illusion of Safety was pretty darn good. Vheissu has that authentic experimental Thrice sound that I do miss though. (The earth will shake) I remember getting so excited for the Alchemy Index. I was a little disappointed until I understood it more. Going back and listening to those 4 disks is what made me really appreciate Thrice even greater. Palms was ok. I don't find is as bad as people have made it out to be. Beyond the pines is quite a masterpiece. (Still haven't got into Major/Minor though.) Nathan I feel like you need to put Thrice on shuffle when doing a house clean or chores etc. Then you're not concentrating on the music as such and subconsciously recognise and get used to them more.
Having listened to Thrice since 2003, and them being my fav band of all time, I agree with the whole journey aspect. New listeners don’t seem to grasp their brilliance…the evolution of Thrice is what makes them so god damn special. Dustin’s raspy tone can not be matched, and Teppei is a weapon. Such an underrated band. Johnny rules, Nathan drools.
I'm an absolute Thrice fanboy too I must admit but I'm also their biggest critic and completely agree about Palms. I grew up with them and I love the way their music has evolved over the years.
I've listened to Thrice since their Illusion of Safety/Identity Crisis days (ca. early 2000s/late 90s). Johnny brings up a good point- the journey with them- to see how much they have evolved as musicians/producers, and with great success and acceptability from the general audience, enhances their value as a worthy ALL TIME greatest band ever. To add to that, a great lyricist that is Dustin, and the creativity of his supporting cast- Teppei could shred with the best out there, Riley can drum roll me to nirvana, and I am really glad (in this track at least) that they are featuring Ed's thick bass tones. All their songs have deep meaning, and not just a beat. Even the beat itself has been curated so delicately and purposely. Sure, if I never started the journey with them, and just listened to them for the first time, I would have thought this song would be just good, and not great (even though I really think this song is great). Dustin's voice will forever be a standout, regardless of what era we're in. Again, I agree with Johnny- Thrice made its mark (on the surface) with its big guitar sounds and licks- in which over the years they have learned to spread the wealth so to say, and get that big sound from other instruments and/or the production of their tracks. This song is a good track in itself, journey or not, due to its guitar tone, bass licks, and unique drum rhythm. I think as a "fan boy" of Thrice, the song is even greater when in juxtaposition with a song from Identity Crisis- you would never know its the same band- however, the effect that you feel afterwards is the same- Thrice always leaves you in some sort of state- whether it is a state of angst during their punkcore days, or a state of curiosity and knowing during their later days. And to end, yes, I will be naming my first born son after the band members of Thrice! Please react more to Thrice- goal is to get Nathan to appreciate Thrice more haha. Dive into (no pun intended) Words in the Water (especially the lyrics), Paper Tigers, Earth Will Shake, Abolition of Man, To Awake and Avenge the Dead, and Blinded to name (just) a few. #THRICE4LIFE
I completely agree with the outro thing. I love how choppy the album version gets for that last chorus and how much the little hammer on pull off lead cuts through
100% it’s a journey with thrice with me too I get what ur saying man. Remembering the days I whipped out illusion of safety and identity crisis many moons ago sure they’ve changed by my undying love for them since way back hasn’t. Good job lads 🤙🏼

I love Thrice for the same reason(s) that Johnny does, but THAT band for me is Counting Crows because I started my journey with them all the way back in '94 (damn I'm old, LOL) and they are my all-time favorite band. P.S. Johnny - Vhiessu is a fecking masterpiece. "Music Box" is so.damn.good.
Think maybe the ‘journey’ thing helps. I mean I REALLY love Thrice, but there’s nostalgia in there and there’s remembering loving TAITA, then Vheissu coming out and just being floored, then the mad brilliance of The Alchemy Index. I think they’re amazing, but recognise some of that might be emotional attachment too, from ‘the journey.’

I tried to get into Thrice back in around 2003/4 or so but kinda bounced off them for some reason - it might have been because the person who pointed me at them was also big into Thursday and so I was expecting that and well, nothing like it. (I did like Brand New however from the same era...) Couple of years ago now however "In Exile" popped up on a Spotify discover weekly, which I loved, but for some reason it didn't click in my head that it was Thrice until recently... which was handy because it made me check out this track and I absolutely love it, so looking forward to checking out the new album when it drops.

I feel with a band like thrice you needed to have started the journey with them. Almost evolve with the band personally as a human. If you listened to phoenix ignition off their debut album and then listened to something off their new album…you wouldn’t understand the evolution. Personally, one of the only bands that has been able to evolve with time without losing a massive part of their following like bands such as….AFI for example. Cheers fellas, great review!
Lol Brand New and Thrice were my two go to bands back in the day. It's surprising that you guys are polarised between them. There is some truth to the idea of needing to go on the journey to truly appreciate them. I love them because of their growth (and also a complete mancrush on Dustin so we have that in common). They always seemed a minor step ahead of my own flavour evolution so every time I heard their next record I was blown away. Beggars being the last. I've loved all their work since but that was the last time I was floored entirely by them. They are also an album band. Their singles tend to be their more generic tracks. Vheissu has gems like Of Dust and Nation, For Miles, Like Moths to Flame that you'd just never hear unless you dug deeper than the singles and are probably their best material. I personally think Palms was really good. Beyond the Pines is one of the best songs they ever made. It isn't as good as Beggars, Vheissu or TAITA but I think it's better than Major/Minor and TBEITBN.
Hahaha I bashed it? I stand by that it’s not an “amazing” song. I stand by it’s not one of their “best” songs. Also, like much of thrice, it’s a grower. From the get go I have loved the guitar tone, the time signature, Ed and Riley’s rhythm section.
I love Thrice. They're just so damn good. How do you keep putting out albums over and over and over again that are just fantastic? They're not the same band they were when they started and they're not even the same band they were just the one album before. I feel like it's so difficult and speaks so much to their talent. I can think of several bands that I've been/still am massive fans of, but I like their new stuff less and less as time goes on. Taking Back Sunday for example. Still love them but their stuff after Fred left just hasn't resonated with me as much, I even reasonably like New Again. Or Underoath who seems to just keep making additional parts of Define the Great Line. Every album has a unique voice and they just keep pulling it out of the bag.
im not sure if they still do this but they used to self produce every second album. if they are still doing this palms was not self produced. ive seen photos of them recording the new album and its all them. i could be completely wrong though.
If I just heard this album I would like it. But since I've done the "journey" with thrice from 2001ish, I fuckn love the album lol. Palms was the only release of theirs ever I did not resonate with
Great intro again guys haha Quite like the song but feel like the singer is always kinda singing on half effort in terms of his range? Love his voice though. Great guitar, bass, and drum tones + production!
This one's been growing on me. I really wasn't impressed when it first dropped. This version for the video is almost a full minute shorter than the pure audio version. Contrary to Johnny, I think it's very much to the song's benefit. When you push past the 4 minute mark you have to really earn the listerner's interest and, for me, Scavengers is too mid-paced and chorus reliant to be just shy of 5 minutes. At 4 minutes and ending on that more intense version of the chorus is just right. To answer Nath, I'm not sure I'd be as in love with Thrice as I am if this was my first exposure to them. I'm always surprised to hear that others didn't like Palms. As much as it's not their best work, it's no worse than say Beggars and has some absolute gold on there.
It wasn’t so much the songs on palms as it was the production for me. Beyond the pines is incredible and the grey, only us and branch in the river are all solid “rock out” thrice.
This is true but also very telling of how artistic they are. Art is there to MAKE us think and REACT. It evokes emotion, positive or negative…thrice are true artists who have never ever stagnated
