I feel like for the straps using a satin ribbon in pink or green would be super cute instead of the quilt material. But it just depends on the look you’re going for! You did a great job! ❤

I think you did great! Here is an easy tip that to me is the number one striking difference between professional and novice sewing-ironing! Giving those shoulder ties, hem, and side seams a good press will make this look like a Loveshack Fanch piece!

Thanks for making the long video! I love to watch your sewing skills develop. Don’t be intimidated. Any mistake you make can be fixed… and always buy this easy patterns. I’ve been sewing since I was 10 or 12, and I still go for the “easy” ones.

It turned out so cute! You could just open up one side of the elastic tunnel and then pull it tighter. Just try it on backwards to make sure you get it as tight as you want! I actually love the ties. I know they aren't bows but the fact that the fabric is thicker and they hang down longer, it does give an exaggerated tie still!

My sewing days were a LONG time ago, and there was no google. But there was my mum and all of her experience, from picking fabrics that are easier to work with, to untangling bobbins, to general rescues. I have inherited her sewing box (not sure where her machine went) and have memories everytime I sew on a button. Also Hi Kiity!!
@danamatsukawa4762

congratulations on completing your dress! It turned out very cute! On the back of the pattern there are usually instructions as to type of fabric to use with the pattern. When you change that up as you did by using a very thick fabric, even a sewer with a lot of experience has to find a way to make it work just as you did.

I started sewing my clothes a few years ago and I have to say the first ones are not the best, especially on the inside, but no one will ever know 🤫 Honestly, practice makes perfect, at one point it will start to be easier There are plenty of tutorials on RU-vid or places like skillshare, it's totally doable! You've got this! 💪 If I can give you a suggestion is to iron as you sew, it makes a world of difference, if your seams and your fabric lay flat (especially with things like straps and hems) it's a lot easier to sew and it will give you more professionally looking clothing.

I’ve been sewing for over 30 years and you are so cute doing this!! I think you did a great job as a new sewer. In each pattern there is a glossary of sewing terms and it describes the marks on the pattern and is usually pretty good with describing the layout and other things. Keep on sewing!!

Hey Alexa! I‘ve been to fashion school and have been a professional seamstress for many years and I think you‘re doing a great job! Sewing IS hard (even for me sometimes), but you‘re doing your best. Also imo a hobby has to be fun - there‘s no need to be perfect at it! Oh and everytime I’m sewing I poke my finger with a needle, I think I lost feeling in my fingertips because of this 😂

I love the dress so so so much, it turned out great. I took sewing clases for 4 years and I agree with you it's kind of cumbersome and you have to take into account a million things and sometimes you are completely sure you are doing something the right way and then you did it WRONG and now you have to try undo the mess uggghh it can be stressing but I love having the possibility to create almost any piece of clothing I can imagine so yeah, it's love-hate relationship in my case.
@metamorphosis702
@metamorphosis702 Год назад
Love this. I used to sew a lot in high school, but quit for many years. Im getting back into it, but still super rusty (lots of seem ripping and re-doing). For the straps of your dress, I suggest just attaching the front strap in the back at a permanent length and remove the back strap. Then, like you said put some bows on top, maybe out of a wide ribbon instead of the quilt fabric. You could hand sew them in place or safety pin. You could also attach the strap in the back with a fun button on the outside instead of sewing the strap to the dress inside, but that also requires making a button hole on the strap.
@lestranged
@lestranged Год назад
Using a quilt like this makes it so easy to get confused about which is the right or wrong side- because both sides are right sides (when it was quilt). So you marking the outside instead of the inside is fully understandable. When working with a fabric that both sides look identical, I will put some pieces of masking tape or safety pins on the wrong side, just so I don't get confused. Then it's easily removable when I am done.

Good job! being from quilt fabric the sewing that shows on outside doesn’t really matter keeping it to quarter inch would be top stitching. Marking with a fabric marker will disappear and not be permanent and finally when cutting the arrows outward instead of into the seam allowance keeps the seams stronger, but you have done a great job
@skye9494
@skye9494 Год назад
You absolutely could tack some bows on! Cut the excess from the straps you already have and do a simple seam joinder and then make the bows and do a quick stitch to join them on. I’d say don’t double over the strips to make the bows. Just close the hem if you want which you should be able to find tutorials of if needed. I think a raw hem on the bows would be very cute also!

Your dress turned out great and what a pretty print! For the too-thick straps, it sounded like you had some unquilted fabric in the same print? You might consider making new straps from that - much easier to tie into bows. Good for you, tackling a simpler project first! Sewing is a complicated set of skills and nobody gets them all at once. Also, pattern instructions assume you already know a lot of those skills, so a basic sewing class or two would be helpful. Good job!

You should definitely make the straps again. And then measure this time for placement too so they are perfect. It wouldn’t take that long. And to be fair my Nana would still have to occasionally redo something even after a lifetime of sewing! I just think you put too much effort into this cute dress not to have it finished in way that makes you happy. 💛🌙

I can not imagine sewing standing. When doing the straps you should iron them down the next time - honestly on all the seams. Even if you do not iron any clothes - while sewing ironing is a must! With elastics you must always consider the give (how stretchy it is) of your particular elastic. You should never rely on the measurement that the pattern says. I whould have never thought to make that pattern of dress out of a quiltet material - at least not the straps and the top part. I'd think, it whould be to bulky. The main part whould be ok.
