love your projects 😀 a little tip when reupholstering is to carefully remove old fabric and use as the pattern to cut out the new pieces that way you know that they’ll fit nicely 👍🏻 & reuse the black bottom piece if you can
Doing the coat of lighter brown before the darker walnut was actually accidental genius because the insides of the glass now appear to have a different color inside. Looks so crisp.
Actually, you get a nicer looking upholstered corner if you fold in the sides first, ad then do the center. My dad, who was a professional upholsterer, showed me that.
Top Tip: I have a steam cleaner which I use on everything including mattresses and my textile car seats. It is perfect for cleaning a thrift store find. It kills the germs and takes away the smells.
Sometimes when reupholstering furniture, because the chair is a small piece, I like to look at large pieces of clothing, you can find really nice fabrics in coats dresses etc. Happy thrifting ;)
I actually love how she first painted the glasses lighter so now the insides of the jars are lighter than the outsides since the first colour shows through :)
Yes! Thrifting, Flea markets, Bulky waste finds, Swap partys. The only thing is I really really wanna go to exactly those thrift stores in the videos. And thats not where I live. Aaaah!
So a tip for smells in fabric and carpet is if you add a little lemon powder, or lilac powder in with the soda. Gets it fresh and the acid in the lemon kills bad odours
Agree with the people saying use a steamer. Also there’s a antibacterial/antifungal spray called Rescue that you can spray on the fabric and dry in the sun.
a tip to the tip, haha!...i spray my furniture/fabric items with bug spray and let it dry in the sun, they spray it with lysol before i start. any cushions, i most definitely wash w/ hot water and soap, then let it dry outside in the sun for at least 2 days. if the cushion is detachable, after 2 days, i will throw in the dryer for about 30 minutes before completing the project. also, i like to add sprigs of either lavender, rosemary, lemongrass or potpourri before i seal it up. it adds a nice light scent to the item!
When recovering save the old pieces of fabric as a pattern. The chair turned out good. If anyone wants to sew a more shaped form you can pin material on outside in. Even hand sew with a bit thicker thread at side seams with buttonhole or upholstery thread. Turn back around and only have to staple or tack the bottom edge. But another helpful hint and for future recovering. Make a slip cover of a smoother lining type material to go over the foam then all future slip covering is easier. But beautiful job. I’m currently doing same. Learning to paint on class too. Supposedly chalk paint sticks. I don’t have a sprayer but looked up first what chalk is to learn how to make it. I gained a 2 car garage sized crafting room built by previous owner in our retirement move. Turned into my sewing studio. I have sewed all my life, 50 years, so now going to teach sewing locally. We moved from southern cal more inland but we actually now have a faster track to Los Angeles county so going to one day check out that thrift store on a trip. Always remade thrift items into clothing when no one called it recycle, upcycle or boho. We just called it being poor! Ha! Now want to branch out to other types of recreating. Painting, furniture, nature. I’m focused on totally recycle now.
Love the authenticity you bring to your videos. Like saying you thought it would take 10 minutes to remove the staples/fabric and it took 30. Little things like that are appreciated to show that these flips do take quite a bit of time and effort, beyond just the time it takes to watch. Wish I had your eye for potential. Seeing a piece in the thrift store and knowing what you could do with it and maybe even more importantly, knowing which pieces wouldn't work.
I love how cute you are about these projects. You're like, let's just figure it out as we go along. It's such a true depiction of what DIY actually is haha & it's fun & creative that way. Thx for the inspo!
Thank you for tackling things that you hadn’t done before and being real about the process. That’s the biggest deterrent but the best encouragement for folks that are trying things for the first time! Xo
I used to do a lot of volunteering with the St Vincent de Paul organization in San Francisco. I live in Washington and would travel to their Soup Kitchen/Thrift store for homeless individuals, where we provided food, clothing vouchers, and also hair cut vouchers. I also did food deliveries to impoverished families here in my own home town. I started doing that in the 2nd grade! They do really great work. It was really neat to see you supporting a quality organization that does a lot for the marginalized people in their communities. And also, thank you for the ideas!
I absolutely love this! I’ve been searching for a larger chair like that and Ross is like $99...not in my budget! Imma search the thrift store and DIY it! Thanks for the inspiration!
A heat gun works even better, there’s a crafters version too if you don’t want the big power tool size (but I did so that’s what I use, it’s also for work too though!). Also for disinfecting with sunlight- make a spray of water, vinegar, and lemon juice in a 3:1:1 ratio and mist that all over your surface before putting in sunlight for about 12-24 hours. This will completely disinfect, almost sanitize your surfaces (and it’s how we clean our mattresses yearly!)
Not only are your projects really cool, well-made, and super budgety... your eye makeup is on point! I'm really glad I found your channel. Thank you for not being all boho... Your ideas are beautiful and can be used year round, any budget, and for folks like me who don't follow trends. Thank you!
I'm a big thrifter and love repurposing item. Paint is your DIY friend. And you don't have to take off old coverings...just clean it if it really bad. And cover it using a stapler. I even use a thin piece of new padding sometime. But I never take off the old covering. (That's just me) ❤ Btw your make-up is on point❤
Little tip when stapling fabric always staple the centers and work stretching and stapling to the corners. Same as an artist would stretch a canvas. I use a stretcher tool used to stretch canvas for paintings. It really holds it tight. Then you will have little to no folds or puckering.
Wow I’m impressed bc even though you didn’t like the first coat on the glassware, it gave it a very nice finish like ombré almost. Light on the inside and dark on the outside, I really want to give that a try!! Really really unique idea.
One last TIP: Use the old cover as a pattern. Trace it onto the new fabric, cut it out...also this will be a good time to add new or fresh padding. Staple or tack it into place. Staple underneath, if you have to use staples on the sides/front...you can camo it with trim that you can purchase.
Loved the end products. With the chair if possible ironing to flatten the pleats. But other than why can I never find cute chairs like that when I go shopping..... So unfair. Seriously brilliant job happy to see another budget thrift flip!
I LOVE DIY projects but I always rush through them. I love watching your videos because they really teach me how taking your time can produce something truly beautiful! Love it!!! 🥰🥰🥰
This was great! In addition to adding the monetary cost, can you also tell us how much time was spent. As I've learned time is money. So giving both a Time end a monetary breakdown will be helpful. Thank you love this flip! Great job. Thanks for sharing.
I really like the effect of having painted the glassware in two different browns, happy little mistake made it even cooler with a two-tone concept! I like how you can see the espresso color on the inside, and the darker matte color on the outside, it looks intentional and really clever!!
Jude Lewis she did. She bought one spray paint, sprayed with it, then it was her saying she bought new spray paint and used the new color on the glassware.
New to your channel and i love your style! I grew up with family who love junking and flipping things. Now I'm a decorator and I flip things for clients. One tip when recovering a chair like that one, is to cut one piece to cover the front and then a separate piece for the back. You can fold the edges in, to the ideal shape, and nail it on. You won't have any gathers to deal with. You can also use a contrasting fabric for the back, if you'd like. Although i love the nail heads, another option is to staple on the back and cover the staples with trim. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Love the picture u had in yor heart and how u brought it to life for us 😊 The colors u chose for yor chair and the wood stain u chose for the legs shows your great eye for detail! I enjoyed this video and u have such a sweet countenance. Thank u!
What a great video! So many cute ideas. Loving the helpful comments also. I actually like to contrast the two colors create between the interior and exterior.
Those kitchen accessories came out great. Great idea too. I love the way you give us all the details on products you use which makes it so easy for us to buy them too! Thanks!
I loved all of the DIY’s! I especially liked the dish that you put the sponges in. I loved how it looked too with the out side being smooth and the inside being grooved, it looked so cool! 🙂 And Kinsley was so adorable too 😂
I am amazed every single time how good your projects turn out. Very high quality! A big pet peeve of mine are lazy DIY tutorials but coming to your channel I know that I’ll never be disappointed. Thank you for your hard work and quality content. :*
I love to buy at thrift stores and surplus there's a lot of unique finds there . You save a lot of money and it feels good to repurpose old things and give it new life but most importantly you help Mother Earth by recycling and repurposing. ❤️
I just moved in to my first apartment after a stint of homelessness. When I saw your you tube, I liked your bedroom, especially the window bench. I also like what you said if I remember making it the best of you. I found that it was the best advice ever. I am into woodwork and looking to making some of my furniture, so the advice about scale was also a good one to remember too. I will stay tune to your channel for more ideas. Thank you
I have an old wingback chair my grandma gave me, I love the shape but the fabric is pink and white stripes.. and not a pretty pink. A 70's pink. I've wanted to have it reupholstered for years but haven't because of the cost. I think I have the confidence now to do it myself! You made this so clear and understandable! Thank you!! I'm a new viewer coming from the Sorry Girls channel, totally subbing right now!
*Next time you redo a chair with fabric, you can use fabric glue. That way you don't have to use nails/screws or staples. I like fabric glue but sometimes I use hot glue lol but only on the mini furniture that I make for my kids dolls! I really like your channel! And I've subscribed!!* 😄
If your furniture upholstery is in good condition like this one, you can also paint it with chalk paint which allows you so many possibilities! Once painted, you can leave it as it is (after a light sanding to make it smooth) or wax it which gives you a leather-like texture. I would use a high quality chalk paint as well as the wax associated with it.
I go to DePaul University in Chicago! St. Vincent is our patron saint, we call him Vinnie, too. There's a statue of him on campus that we rub his hand for good luck on our exams!
Really loved these DIY's. I've reupholstered furniture myself and it really is like wrapping!! So glad you showed everyone how simple it can be and how much of a difference it can make. Its also a great way to give life to a piece that might have been stained by kids or pets. :) Thanks for sharing.
Just a tip when staining, try and use shop rags or cut up t-shirts. When you use paper towels it can leave behind fibers and dust which can leave some imperfections. imperfections might be what you're looking for because I know some people like that but I figured I let you know a different way to lesson those imperfections when staining and after with your finished product.
Use Diamateous Earth. It kills all bugs. Its a mechnical killer. Meaning it cuts fine sloces into the bugs body andnthey eiyher blerd or dehydrate wtihin a few hours. Non toxic. Only thing to kill bed bugs that you dont need a pro for. But, kills all insects to my knowledge.
New Subie. I love how you explain everything and especially the mistakes. I'm going to head out to the thrift store. Also living in the city on trash day, many treasures.
Love St. Vincent’s... and love the flips, the chair was definitely my favorite: Still anxiously awaiting the Bohemian Beauty room. I so need inspiration for my small space 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Omg thank you!! I’ve done a few smaller things a stools but nothing this big 🤗 I think I’m really great at wrapping gifts so I applied this skills 😂 💕😘
I love how these turned out! Curious to know if you find the paint chips on the glass? Because if not, I will definitely be doing this. Also - for reupholstering, when you take off the fabric, if you cut along the seams / seam rip it, then you could use that as a template for sewing a cover.. may make it easier? May also be a waste of time, lol
I’ve sprayed something glass before and it’s held up well, but these will definitely get more use so may be a different story. I will definitely keep you posted. For the reupholstering I think that’s definitely a great idea to use the existing fabric as a pattern for the new one!! Especially for the general size 🤗
COMMUNITY THRIFT STORE COVINA , CA * On Arrow Hwy -- between Grand Ave and Glendora Ave. (On the South side of street) This is a BIG Thrift Store You L ❤ V E this one👍 They are bringing in new stuff every day every hour
Seeing you reupholster the chair was so helpful! I'm working on some dining chairs right now! Ngl, I did die a little when you grabbed a plastic bag at Lowe's for that one tiny item 😱😅
I hadn't registered the bag. I was sad she used the non-checker option. I always go to a checker - if we use the robotic self checkout aisle they will eliminate checker jobs if and when they can... + why am I checking myself out - that is a service I expect...
