Hi Wendy! I went to sewing school a few years back now. We went to a factory and they had a machine that scanned and punched a hole (on the body fabric) into each corner where the pocket should sit, it then went to the sewer who used these teeny holes as guides to line up and attach the pocket to the body. We did the same in class using a sharp tool used for pattern making, using a ruler to figure out where the pocket should sit. It worked well! In saying that, pins were banned at our school due to not being efficient enough as we were learning how to sew to industry standard, so we were used to eyeballing things. We often used techniques like notching to line up fabric when sewing instead of pins. Pockets, especially the ones you did, are so hard. You did so well haha, I just avoid them all together! xx

Wendy, if you look at a pair of mass produced cargo shorts, the pockets are top stitched on from the outside. Fold and press the raw edge under, pin pocket in place, top stitch to attach pocket into desired place. Back stitch at start, corners, and end to keep pocket from being torn away by weight of treasures in pocket. Happy sewing

a quick note about pinking shears! when using regular scissors i tend to clamp the handles in my hand to try and get a closer cut and this works fairly well since the blades are not serrated. however, if you put any sideways or perpendicular tension on the pinking shears while you're cutting the serrated edges of the shears will get stuck in the fabric and tear your fabric up instead of getting a clean cut! i learned this the hard way and thought i had bad scissors. try and cut straight down with less force and let the shears do all the work and you'll get a much cleaner cut! hope this helps! absolutely adore your videos i've made so many cute mini backpacks with your videos as guidance. wish you the best!

@mellie4174 4 года назад
So odd. I live in France and i hear people calling any sort of sweater with front closure a gilet and when we went to buy my husband's suite the salesman called the vest a tailleur (the same word for tailor) anyone else in France that can comment?
@Caraxou
@Caraxou 4 года назад
@@mellie4174 I agree with your definition : a "gilet" is a sweater with front closure, but different from a cardigan which is a bit longer. Also, a "tailleur" is a suit for women, that's weird it was used for your husband (vest) 🤔 Usually a "tailleur" is made of a skirt and a blazer jacket.

Awesome video Wendy ! Fraying - I would totally invest in a serger. That will save you so much time and will totally finish off any interior seams. :-) They run about $299 - $399 low end pricing, but totally worth it. Love your videos. :-) Pocket attached without using pins - there is a double stick adhesive tape that is used for quick hemming and it is phenomenal. Just what you would need for tricky curves. Once applied it will be much easier for you to stitch without bunching. I've been sewing for about 30+ years and am always inspired by your videos.

Love the work you did with the pockets, but for the overall look, I like the green outfit better. But you know, Wendy, it's not just the final look that most of your fans are probably enchanted with, but the whole process that you share with us - it's so inspiring! I've wondered for a while, but your struggle with pinking shears is now really prompting me to ask: is a serger on your wish list? After getting my Brother 1034D years ago, I have never looked back. A serger is an absolute game changer, both in the way it simplifies the creation process and in the way it elevates the finished product. The only time I use my pinking shears now is before washing fabrics, so they don't create a tangled mess of thead in the washing machine. I trim the edges slightly and it's never too much effort, since it's only one layer of fabric being trimmed. I am hoping to see you use a serger in your videos one day.

Hey there! Before I say anything else, I´m sorry for my bad english, I´m from germany. For the Pockets, you could mark the pockets on the fabric (front or backside) and then pin the pocket in some places like the beginning, the end, the center on the bottom and the curves. That´s one way how i learned it :) I think it´s much easyer.

Hi Wendy, I'm a fashion design student and wanted to commend your efforts for sewing on the pockets. However, there is a bit of an easier way to attach cargo style pockets and I hope I'm able to explain this clearly. I would start by pre-ironing all your seam allowances on both sides of the panel pieces (the long stips of interfaced fabrics) so that the strip is ready to go. Then for the pocket pouch piece, I would attach the "U" side (the bottom of the pouch) to the side panel ONLY and leave a gap on the sides so it's not completely finished. Then I would do the small topstitch. By leaving it unfinished, you'll have a little more room to maneuver when stitching it in place. I would then mark where I wanted the pieces to sit on the vest and pin the band with the half attached pocket pouches to the vest. I would sew the other side of the panel to the vest. Then, I would finish the side edges of the pocket pouch by stitching the pouch and band together and then completing the topstitching on the front. Lastly, I would add the pocket flap. Traditionally, attaching a cargo pocket would require you to topstitch really close along the side panel through the vest to attach it, but if you didn't want that topstitching there then you would have to complete only half the pocket to maneuver around your machine, attach the long panel to the vest, then finish off the pocket. Hope that sort of helped, either way, I love how it turned out!
