Lace I can't resist lace, the nice soft cotton or rayon lace. linen and cotton men's and ladies clothes, and sheets. I also look for books. Any book on sewing, or embroidery,I love the way my grandmother taught. The reasoning behind it and the fact that she thought that your time and the expense of the fabric ment that you did your best. No fast fashion, it was made, mended and used until it couldn't be used for that purpose, then you refashioned, madea quilt, or used for some other purpose. I wish we were taught that way now . She also taught me to use the best I could afford, not to use the cheapest because I wouldn't care if I messed up and I needed to care. Sorry on my soap box again. And yes it would be nice to see how to made the Riding pants from the book. I know it will be different from some other ways of doing things. Thank you for showing us your haul. It was wonderful. Do you ever just get the laces out and stroke them dreaming of ways to use them or am I the only one?

I haven't even watched the video yet. Saw the promised of the lace trimming and inserts. I LOVE finding those things at the thrift shops. Been collecting for years. And, btw, I hope you take this the right way, from an old lady: you, young lady, are just so darn cute. It's nice when I see your smiling face in my YT feed. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Keep going... Thank you!

Awww thanks so much for the kind words 😚 I know, wait to see all the lace! Most of it was graciously gifted, I can't wait to use it!! Do you use yours? Or just hoard it? (Both acceptable answers to me 😄!)
@rosehavenfarm2969
@rosehavenfarm2969 4 года назад
Evelyn Wood I both hoard and use! I use mostly on home decor, a trim here, a trim there. I make huck embroidery towels for our kitchen and bath; I like to use the cotton trims for the bottom edge. There is usually enough trim for at least one towel. I used to make my clothes (50 years ago), but got out of the habit. I would love to start again, and use the pretty trims. But, being on a farm, my time in the sewing room is mostly repair work, and some quilt piecing. Right now on the North, we are in the midst of the harvest, so I don't have a lot of energy left to go down to the sewing room. But it does make me happy (my DH husband calls it my "happy place") and I should MAKE the time to spend there. Like you, I love just *looking* at the laces. I may go do that this evening! Years ago a friend gave me boxes of her grandmother's hand-made cotton doilies. She said, "I know you will cherish them and appreciate them." And I do. I use them during the winter on tables and the backs of some chairs. Best wishes to you, Evelyn.

As for future videos, yes, PLEASE teach up pattern drafting a pair of riding breeches, and maybe you’ll show us a few tips you think of regarding the bath robes, please please? I know your plans are for the sewing school, but even a quick peek, maybe? Just love, love your channel - i find your optimistic demeanor so comforting as we here in america still struggle with the pandemic, political fears, you name it. Thank you for cheering us up!

When you mentioned that you needed to lower the waistline on that cute little white top, I flashed on using your wide eyelet for that new waistline. It looked about the right width plus you can thread the ribbon through the lace for your waist-gathering. Just a thought...

That slate blue color is particularly stunning on you! I love all the lace. I inherited what I believe to be handmade lace to trim pillow cases. two are a beautiful soft pink. All of them are in pairs, and the same length, which is why I think they were made for pillows. I take them out to pet them every so often, lol. One thing I cannot pass up when thrifting is a good silk scarf, particularly vintage Vera Neumann scarves. I wish I was more creative about wearing them. Evelyn, I do have one off topic request. Could you possibly do a tutorial on replacing a zipper in a pair of jeans? I am struggling to replace the zip in my son's favorite cargo shorts. Part of the problem was the zip was not put in as well as it should have been. But, I've watched a lot of tutorials, but they don't explain as well as you do. Thatnks for another enjoyable vid.

Summer is finally dying here, but a pinafore or house dress is still going to be nice to sit on the porch and work on one of the antique sewing machines that have followed me home in the last six months! I have a beautiful Jones machine that says “As provided to Her Majesty Queen Alexandra” in curling Gold with a hand crank so it will sew without a big treadle case!
@Evelyn__Wood
@Evelyn__Wood 4 года назад
Oh wow!! Now that sounds like fun!! And exactly how many antique machines did you bring home?? 😃
@reginaromsey
@reginaromsey 4 года назад
Evelyn Wood I think I have 9 treadle (about $35 each) and 4 electric, including one that appears to be a pre 1900 that has been electrified. One of the treadle machines uses a full small spool of thread instead of a bobbin! This has meant that I have to find room for the four gorgeous cabinets. My housemate is threatening mayhem if I bring in any more. I am working on cleaning and oiling and making box bottoms for the ones missing their cases so they can be used much like today’s machines. Then I’m going to see about selling them again. It is interesting to see some of the prices people put on these old machines when there were literally millions made.

There is a town-wide garage sale this weekend in the next town over from mine. Yes, please to the breeches pattern drafting and making. Your vintage hauls are inspiring, and remind me so much of the things I used to easily find more than thirty years ago here in the US. So many beautiful things. I am sure they are to be found still, I must just look harder. I remember thinking that fabric and notions just make the rounds from one stitcher’s home to the next. Once I showed a friend a lovely piece of cotton voile I found at a garage sale. She told me she had had a piece just like it once upon a time, sold it at a sale and mildly regretted it. We turned over the ticket attached to the fabric. There, in her handwriting, were her initials!

I have a lot of beautiful coloured. Vintage lace and,as you said, I'm too frightened to use them.I love just looking at them and my vintage buttons.Sadly,I don't have anyone with the same interests.I loved it when I was in art college ,forty nine years ago,when you were surrounded with people who had the same passion.Even if the medium and materials were different no one thought it odd that you would find such excitement and awe from an object or material.I'm so glad for your Chanel and love your hauls as I feel a kindred spirit. Yes please to your pattern drafting and making from an original pattern.I,also,have vintage sewing books and I love the feel and smell of them.It fascinates me that hundreds of years ago someone else with the same passion was reading the same book.

I LOVE going to thrift and antique stores. I love searching through old linens as it is a great way to obtain antique fabrics. Sometimes you can find them quite cheap. I bought an old, soft linen napkin for one dollar . It is just thick enough that I plan to make a doll coat out of it. There is also the option of a crazy quilt (lap size so as not to get bogged down) or as you know the possibilities are endless. I also have a delightful stash of lace so I know what you're talking about in that category also. I really value your tips and enjoy your videos.

On thrifting, if you find something you like but can't think of a garment to fashion from it, you can always cut it into bias for trim on another garment - like an apron or neckline or make piping out of it and string ties or fabric belts with a vintage bakelite buckle.

I have been collecting vintage/antique lace for a long time. My mom bought me a vintage lace tea dress when I was 19 yrs old. She thought it would be a wonderful wedding dress, and for only $20 she bought it. Jump ahead many years...the dress was "as is" so I had to use a lot of my lace to fix it. I was so used to just hoarding and admiring all my laces that the thought of using them didn't occur to me. Finally my mom had to snap me out of it and say, "This is your wedding dress!" Yeah ok I guess I will use my beautiful laces on it.

Ooh! Lovely haul! I adore all your new bits and pieces so much. I was wondering if your dressing gowns are that old brand Smartex? I must admit, I’ve got a few. My latest one is a larger men’s in a striped pure wool. It’s huge and warm and has lovely deep pockets ❤️❤️

I am amazed at your finds and am quite jealous. Here, the UK went in for fast fashion in a big way; hence, charity shops are full of cheap and nasty things, mostly polyester, from the recent past. Another thing, most high street charity shops are quite corporate, and more and more are filling their shops with horrible mass-produced trinkets from far-Eastern sweat shops. I have a feeling that when they are sorting their donations, the type of older things that people like us would love, are tossed away in favour of a trendy-looking dress from Primark.

The charity shops make money by selling on to secondhand clothing companies who sort, grade and send overseas, although they also sell some of the vintage clothing back to UK shops. I have seen yarn in charity shops but not noticed sewing supplies.

Would love to see the video of drafting the vintage riding breeches pattern, plus sewing them up. Love all your tutorials, they are full of useful information and tips but most of all, inspiration.

The charity shops here in UK have opened again now but there are always large queues outside. I can't wait to go in and have a browse though they don't seem to think old sewing things are saleable!!!

Love the vintage patterns and trims! Finally back to sewing this week. Its my happy place and I need to remember this. I'm working on a sun dress from a 70s pattern right now.

First, please make the video Evelyn ! Great to see all those things. Love lace though I never wear it.I really should. Must plan some in. I am u.k. too, and where I am there are a few tiny charity shops, and nothing much in them at this time. But that's how it goes. Thanks for showing all those things, loved them.
