Thrift Shopping Antiques & Vintage in 2 Countries! Who Wins?

The heat is on! We're shopping two thrift stores in the same chain on different sides of the US-Canadian border, in search of cool things for our collections and bargains we can bring to our collectors. Where are the bargains best, and what's the difference between thrifting south and north of the border?
We start at the Burien, Washington Value Village, a place we've come to find valuable vintage for decades! The donation center, stock room and shelves are packed, with more good stuff rolling out as we shop. We meet a viewer who just picked up sterling in the silver plate section, so we're going to look hard through the shelves! A cheaply priced English creamer and a spatter glass vase make us go grab a cart right away, and we show the whole experience as we pile up a nice total at the register. But is it enough for Team USA to win?
It looks like it'll be a close contest when we enter the Value Village in Richmond, British Columbia, the Canadian challenger in this battle! A different mix of vintage and antiques awaits us, with English and even Cuban items (that we can't take back over the border) amidst the American, Canadian and pan-Asian vintage we find! A Viking Glass duck reminds us why we came, and we even find furniture! But is that enough to put Team Canada in the lead? You'll have to watch to the end to see who wins this international thrift shopping duel!

Hi George, This was a fun video. I loved seeing what is selling in Canada. Also, I just wanted to mention that Scott from The Old Curiosity Shop on RU-vid is a reseller who buys and sells lots of 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s coffee percolators and such. He cleans them and actually brews a cup of coffee in them to make sure they are properly working before he lists them for sale. He also picks up vintage cords, for older appliance’s to have extras on hand. In case one of your viewers may be trying to locate one. 💖💞💖

Who won? Value Village won, although the magazine rack/end table was a great find. They're called Savers where I live, but i call them $pender$ because of their prices and transportation costs. The last times I was through there was zero useful vintage for resale and barely OK prices for personal use stuff. After spending nearly as much on gas as on stuff, I haven't been back. Others I know elsewhere do better, but they live close enough to go almost daily and first thing in the morning.

@@TheAntiqueNomad Excellent video, and I learned a lot, as usual. There is certainly a lot of Johnson Bros., Sadler, and "Made in India" up in the Vancouver area. I was interested to see you look at the blue glass piece - I have the very same one and also have been unable to identify it. You got a great deal on the small side table/cupboard - I have found that the Salvation Army here in Vancouver puts significantly higher prices on furniture. And, yes, I think Value Village does a lot of silver 925 jewellry. P.S. For Mid Century Modern the store in Vancouver is Refinds on Main Street. Bart there is terrific. But you may find it hard to find a bargain there - MCM is molten HOT in these parts!

You found Buckingham Palace and the British Parliament in brass. I haven't seen those before. I used to shop at the Richmond Store from time to time as my husband's brother lives there. Harder and harder to find good British goods, as the older folks are passing on, and the population is primarily Asian and Indian now and they want the bright shiny new things.

Good evening, George. Value village had some really good prices. I liked the Peter Rabbit child's plate. I spotted some Scooby Doo figures in one of the bags. That bag would've likely had to come with me. That was a steal on the 1930s piece, with the magazine rack on it, and it looked to be in fantastic condition. From the items I saw, I'd have to go with the Canadian store. That was a fun comparison!

Enoch Wedgwood (1813-1879) was an English potter, founder in 1860 of the pottery firm Wedgwood & Co of Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. He was a distant cousin of the famous potter Josiah Wedgwood, of Josiah Wedgwood & Sons but their two businesses were separate concerns. Enoch Wedgwood became a partner in the firm of Podmore Walker & Co, originally founded in 1834 by Thomas Podmore (1791-1860) & Thomas Walker of Tunstall. Following the death of Thomas Podmore in 1860, Enoch Wedgwood inherited a share in the interests of the business left to him by Podmore. The firm carried in under the name of Wedgwood & Co. In later years Wedgwood & Co was renamed Enoch Wedgwood (Tunstall) Ltd in 1965 and in 1980 it was taken over by Josiah Wedgwood & Sons, who renamed it Unicorn Pottery.
