For all of us gals who didn't grow up with a dad, Alex this really touched my heart. That is very special. Thank you so much for letting us share this time with you. Abby trust me hang in the moment with your dad. He thinks you are growing up quickly and you are, but your time with your mom and dad will go quickly for you too. Enjoy the moment cause you only have this time with them.
Here in the UK our thrift shops also have Ebay stores to sell higher priced items and over there they sell them in their shops. People will still buy so they are not pricing themselves out of the market - there were plenty of items in there that were more economically priced. I tend to look at glassware and once found a Georgian wine glass for £1 and I sold it for £400.
@@denisemeredith2436 they do that here or have deals with resellers who purchase their better items before they go to the shelves. Some even have two tiers of shops where they sell the better items at higher prices.
Especially as they are an opportunity shop. I don’t give to op shops who put too high a price on things, especially when the CEOs are receiving ridiculous salaries. I give to the smaller ones.
Since 1979 or so, from small ladies auxiliary, church shops and Sally-Anne's all over small town BC, I have amassed a large collection of antique and intrinsic value jewelry. You just have to love and constantly look at jewelry to know importance.
What a nice day for Dad and daughter to bond. My big thrift store find recently was a piece of pottery by artist Nancy Pawel for $3.99. Her pottery sells for $400-500 and up!! It is not very often that I find something like that, but I love to keep looking!
Some thrift stores are becoming expensive. I know Goodwills are selling right on ebay these days. I think this is why the resellers I watch are going to garage sales and doing what you do with buys directly from people.
Glad you can find some cool stuff. Our thrift stores have been closed for two months and counting here in Ontario...so frustrating when we have to empty my mother-in-law's home of contents.
When I was young we used to do triftstore party, we got 5 random records from the triftsstore, you just closed your eyes and grab a record. One party that stood out, we had American local Church choir, AC DC tribute band , bird sound, ballads from weird cheesy guy and kids tunes. Fun times...
I found the same thing in the thrift stores in my area. I stopped going to Goodwill and would hit SalVac Army when they had half off sales. I found much better deals at the smaller independent thrift stores....like Assistance Leagues, Animal rescue, hospice and church shops. I have even gotten better deals at antique stores.
I bought a Scotch brand round cooler at Salvation Army this week, only $6.00. It's red plaid with insert but no "canned ice." From the 1950s, very happy as I already have the companion beverage jug.
I haven’t shopped in a thrift store for over a year. The last time I went to Goodwill, everything was priced retail or as priced on eBay. Not the price paid; the listed price. If I am going to pay retail, then I’ll buy it new.
The girl there told me that it was because they got a raise of their wages…….. the funny thing is they are a for profit business, I always thought they were a charity, but I found out a few years ago that they are NOT a charity… SO THE GUY THAT OWNS THEM IS MAKING A LOT OF MONEY, BUT TELLING EMPLOYEES A DIFFERENT STORY……
@@tadah98 correct. The executives for goodwill name their salary due to be non profit. As well as other companies that are similar. All info is available online. Salvation Army is the closest thing to a charity.
I love when people do videos of shopping in a thrift store!!! You can teach us so much and when we shop then we can find great deals too. More Please!!! 🥰🥰🥰
Abigail is growing fast and I've noticed the last few times that we've seen her that she is becoming a little bit shy on camera, LOL!! Enjoy every moment with your kids, they grow so fast.
I will not have a bad word said about Robert Goulet as he was a singing phenomenon, what with his silky smooth vocal twangers and immaculately sculpted moustache. His ‘vocal twang’ was inimitable in every conceivable way as was his facial hair...
Some of my favorite memories of my dad were when we would go grocery shopping together; he’d pick me up from elementary school and that was the time it was just the two of us. I think Abby will have those kinds of memories, too. They are priceless.
I volunteer at a charity shop, the store has everything priced at £3 or less and I've managed to get some really nice items which includes some expensive brands and band merch, such as Tshirts for £2 and some console games for around £1 to £2, one of which I sold for around £30.
Cool finds...I dropped off some stuff yesterday at a Salvation Army and stopped in to check it out,,,wow they were expensive, just the quick look around I saw dollar store stuff for $4.99 and other stuff I thought was over priced, yet the place was busy!!
Love your thrift store videos, my granddaughter loves to have me take her, perusing them for vintage clothing for her. Your daughter reminds me of my granddaughter, sweet personality
Thank you for doing another video like this. It's like we are there looking at stuff and we get the bonus of your knowledge of the items and ballpark prices. Makes the video/shopping trip more interesting
Recently I found a Seiko at a thrift store. Looked brand new. I had to take it somewhere to get the back off for a new battery but wearing it everyday. $2. Brag. Love thrift stores.
I used to love the Thrift Shop in Leamington Spa U.K. got some great pieces there back in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Sadly long gone. Not sure Abigail enjoyed that much. She’s not old enough yet, but that was the look of a teenager. When you got home.
Hi Alex! Wish I could have been there! I have that exact Rival Crock Pot but I don't have the original lid. I have a lid that mostly fits. It used to be my mom's and it must be 50 years old but still works great!
Travel tip: if you go to the UK, hit up the charity shops. We found some cool souvenirs to bring home and they cost next to nothing. Same with the Sunday flea markets in rural France.
The "wooden " plague is not hand carved. They are made out of like saw dust and pressed into a mold. I have 4 of these from when I was in Germany in the 80s. Had 5, but one fell and broke and that's how I figured out how they were made.
My mom once had a conversation with a Salvation Army Major about their pricing. He said that the purpose of the thrift stores is not to help poor, homeless, people or give emergency aid. They have other programs for that. The purpose of the thrift store is to raise money for those other programs. If you look at it that way their pricing makes sense.
I follow him on his etsy shop. A lot of it he's priced UP for high $$, and a few of those he's already put on sale. One thing about the piano teacher's amazing vintage clothes -- they are mostly size women's XS- S. Not so many of us wear that size these days.
Goodwill money goes to top dogs and either free or low paid employees. Alot are in programs that they have messed up life, and they hire alot of handicap to get cheap. Salvation Army goes to helping people . Company high ups get very little pay. It's always went like that. So all of Salvations programs can actually help people.
@@GuyWithTheDogs No, not GIVE it away ~ but, pricing Dollar Store items at $1.99 and empty Classico jars at more than they'd cost with the sauce in them, doesn't help their cause.
@@BastetNoodles One pricing anecdote isn't much of an argument. And it's a safe bet that if I canvassed my local grocery store, I could find thousands of items priced above the same or similar items that a dollar store carries, and those grocery stores seem to be doing just fine, as are the dollar stores.
My nieces husband gifted me with a Seiko solar watch a few years ago and I love it. It’s kind of industrial looking, but works like a charm. It’s the only watch I wear.
You are lucky to live in a city that has a Salvation Army Thrift Store. We used to have one but, sadly, it closed down. Now we only have one Goodwill Store.
Sorry your carved wood plate is cast resin or poly foam. The mold was made from a actual wood carving that's why it looks real, but the back of it should have shown you it is not.
@@Craftenberger This is a big problem on ebay. People get these cast resin objects they think are real carved wood. A seller had 2 of these that were 2 foot tall Spanish soldiers. I explained to him they weren't wood and his first clue should have been the 2 carvings were identical. Every worm hole every stroke of the knife each were the same in every detail something impossible to do with real wood. After telling him that the company was still in business and even sells on ebay! His answer was to block my messages. Now this guy was selling bronze sculptures like he was an expert, would you buy anything from this man? The company that made this stuff in the 60s and 70s was Nettle Creek Classics. People all over the internet sell this stuff claiming it is real carved wood and some of this stuff is copies of bronze art. Because of the weight of the objects I see people believing they are real bronze as well.
Little known fact: The first manufactured run of Larry's tow truck had Larry's real phone number on it. He got a flood of calls and had to change his number.
An eBay seller would have bought the Chia Zombie for 3.99 and sell it for 29.99 - somebody will buy it. Unfortunately, amateur paintings can be purchased by the truckload for $10 each. The supply is truly unbelievable. The clothes pickers are often after sports jerseys and jackets - they are highly flippable.
Sometimes you can find some good deals and other times things are just to expensive...I've found things cheaper at Wal Mart than a Salvation Army store...It's pretty sad too considering they pay nothing for things coming in...They get 100% profit....
There are still costs of heating, lighting and housing items too. I don't mind so much but you won't catch me in a Red Cross thift shop in Australia anymore. Only designer clothes and a few racks at that and all highly priced.
Greetings from Clay County, Missouri ! When I worked in a thrift store ( in the mid '90's ) we priced EVERYthing ending in .99 AND I was told to price things for 1/2 off day. If I thought it was worth $50, price it at $100 for the 50 on half off day :I I priced things at what I would pay and got a $100/month BONUS for increased sales. STILL not worth it for $700 / month :( TA ! ATB !! & HH !!! 1694 thumbs UP !!! i non c & buy 4 NOW
Hey Alex. I know this has nothing to do with this video but there's this beautiful house on "Urban Exploring with Kappy" that is sadly going to end up demolished. It made me think of the Potter's house, and your way of bringing life back to old things. It's an old brick house from the 1800s in Tennessee. It would be great to see you take it on and do another restoration Masterpiece to an amazing home like the potter's house. Come on man I know you and your awesome family are well deserving of a vacation.
If you donate locally to Goodwill, that stuff doesn't stay here. A truck picks it up and it's taken to a warehouse to sort and they decide what is sent to which store. I don't like that. They put colored stickers on their merchandise. So anything tagged yellow that did not sell in a few weeks is sent back to the warehouse to be sent out again. If it returns a second time they junk it. Our store has half off tag days. I was walking through and they had an antique small table. I absolutely loved it. It wasn't priced so I asked. "$9.99" Wow! I took it. Our store doesn't ask anywhere near retail that other people are reporting. Shirts $1 each and yes, half off days make them fifty cents. They have people lined up to go grab clothing that they can resell on ebay. Ebay just changed their paypal procedures. You can buy on ebay using paypal but if you are a selling, you have to let them put that sales dollar right into your bank account instead of paypal.
@5:03 My grandmother had that exact carving, it was one of a pair. The other one had a little mountain cabin scene on it. They must have been mass produced.
