Most history lessons for doilies state it was the nuns who started teaching doily making to poor Irish women as a way for them to make money by marketing them (mid to late 1800’s). Then it became more commonplace in Victorian times to use several doilies around table scapes to protect furniture from moisture and messes. This is when fancier crocheted items became popular, as it was very important for young ladies to have many doilies and table runners included in their dowery chests. In 1866, a publication mentioned a doily for wine glasses and the maker’s name was Doiley (possibly the origin of the name?) Also, in the 1800’s, crocheted antimacassars were made to protect chair arms and backs from the macassar oil men used in their hair at the time. Later, in the US, the tradition was picked up, but they were called chair sets. Doilies were also used to make tussie-mussies in Victorian times for women to carry flowers in. I collect many doilies and I make doily & lace wedding journal books. Some are clean, but some I tea stain to get that older look like some of yours. Today, the more prized ones are handmade, especially Irish ones. I love your little crock❤

Oh my, I am thrilled you had that knowledge and shared it with me! The more I learn about all my treasures the more special to me they become! Do you happen to know if there is a way to tell the Irish ones apart from other regions? If I can score an Irish one I will be over the moon!!♥️🥰

@@TheCuratedHome From what I know, Irish linen is made from some of the highest quality flax, now imported from France, Belgium or the Netherlands. At one time they grew and spun their own. Irish damask is used mostly now for the top end of the market of luxury uses. The same with their Jacquard patterns and weaves. The yarns that are woven out of the country, then brought in to be bleached, woven & made into something are not truly considered Irish linen, even though they may say “made in Ireland”. To be truly considered Irish linen, the yarn must be spun using the skills, craftsmanship and technology of the Irish and the linen fabric must be made using the design and weaving skills of the Irish, from 100% flax. Once you own a piece, you can easily tell the difference in quality. It is usually durable, but soft & breathable. It is also heavier/ coarser than, say, Italian linen. Linen does wrinkle, does not stretch much, feels cool to the touch and often has a “shiny” look when new, but this will wash away. It absorbs moisture easily, but dries quickly. One test is to wet a finger and press down on the fabric. If it goes through to the other side, it is often linen. Other fabrics tend to take longer to absorb. Not sure how else to describe it 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️
