I can imagine how proud you are of your sailor! I have been a water person my whole life but medical has stuck me on land. I love watching my SV people and their adventures.
“I’m just an amateur”. One of the things I love about you Sam is that you make sailing relatable to couch sailors like me despite the fact that you’ve sailed almost every ocean on this planet. Makes me think I could do this one day too. 👍
Seems like you'd miss your own boat stepping off learning that trick Later with dolphins 🐬 as well Waveguide like radar perhaps with trough And then coming in at night to a new harbor. Cliff hanger wanted another round touch and gos Looked like fun Local knowledge as well thermals where to get the lift...
Sam you might wanna keep the pole of the forestay when you are on a reach. Big risk of breaking the pole (or worse: the forestay) if you don’t 😅. Stay safe out there, love following your voyage!
The really big waves at nazare you see photos of only break 2-3 times per year The rest of the time its still big (and dangerous for navigation) by normal standards The record breaking waves are the result of the most intense winter storms per season No one would be out sailing anyway; the local fishermen probably stay in as well
Sam, I met you in Titusville a few months ago. I was the guy that said hi Sam as I came into the dock and you were working on your free boat. Anyways I was just in the German Alps and watched many paragliding flights and it was pretty amazing. Thought of you since you said at the time you'd be going to the Alps after I mentioned how much we all enjoyed your flights I believe in Scotland. Enjoy your sail through Europe.
My favorite part about your sailing videos is you actually sail a great deal of the time. I often see sailing vessels motor up the second the wind dies. I totally understand the desire to get moving but I always enjoy your willingness to relax and enjoy the moment.
Really enjoy your footage, makes me considering plans to leave land to explore all seven seas! btw I cannot agree more with you concerning flying the spinnaker! Thank you!
Good to stay busy and good with putting up. . .but I agree with everyone else, for not racing, a code zero or Asym is 90% of the spinnaker with 20% of the set up. Can still use the pole but don’t really need the uphaul/down haul. . .Super light don’t need to roller reefing. . .Just an easy low wind sail. . .Love that you put the time into the spinnaker, but it looked like you had it resting on the forestry. . .It might not have been, but that’s not safe.
Loved the Dolphins, the unfurling of the spinnaker, and your attitude makes it seem like a lot of fun, I could see you using a drone out in the middle of nowhere! Happy Paragliding!
Hi Sam. I see that you don't have a sock in the spinaker, well, that doesn't matter. I'll tell you how I do it When adducting or organizing the Spinaker, you stretch it along its entire length and put it together until it becomes a cigar, you take sewing thread and in sections every 50 cm you tie the thread to the spinnaker as if you were tying a bow, an ordinary, loose knot. It's just keeping the spinnaker organized and you do it until you get to theholes of the brooms, you fold it in the middle joining the three holes and put it in the bag. Once you want to do the maneuver you already have the three fists in sight, you just have to hoist the Spi, quartering it only with the main one, once up you present it to the wind with the same force of wind and pulling the brooms it will break the fine threads of sew and it will open evenly and suddenly withelegance. P.S. It is making a worm with many bellies with its belt of sewing thread. That's called quartering a Spinaker WITHOUT HAVING A SOCK.
Love the flight and insta 360 footage! Also appreciate you brining in more dock handling and sailing notes of experience like flying the spinnaker. One of your best videos! Dean
The waves at Nazaré get huge only around September - October....this is when professional surfers get out there to break records. The waves hit huge just North of the lighthouse.
I feel uneasy to point anything to a great sailor with so much experience but I have to: 4:30 Beware Sam do not let the pole rest on the forestay as the lateral force is translated in a much stronger longitudinal pull on the stray that could break it (or the pole). Might not be critical in your case but why tempt fate when so much sh%t can go wrong already. I know you knew, ,just absentmindedness I guess. Great video again and thank you for sharing your journey with us . PS:Dolphin#1 "human jumping in the water" Dolphin#2 "smells like asparagus, lets split"
I grew up on the ocean but I'm not comfortable sailing more than a few miles out EXCEPT I would trust this guy to sail us anywhere. I have a lot of confidence in Sam
I'm no expert, but I think if you've crossed an ocean it's safe to say you're no-longer and amateur Sam. I did a tandem paraglide a couple years ago and enjoyed it, I'd like to do more, but don't really live here where there is any gliding.
I have a GP14 Symetric spinnaker for my Drascombe Lugger. It added 1.5KTS of speed recently in a very low wind situation. I mostly fly it Asymetrically as its a lot easier to sale and as long as you pull it down hard with a cleat fore of the shrouds it flies really well. I only use it for low wind scenarios and try not to use it symmetrically as its so hard to pole out etc. Many people assume you want to go fast with a spinnaker but you;re right Sam, they often just keep you going in light airs which is exactly why I have one.
Right on. Exactly. Ive tried using mine without the pole. I found the most time consuming part was running all the lines and repacking it. the pole didn’t add much extra time or effort for me and seems to fly a lot better dead downwind. So I always use it. I do have a really well set up track system from my pole that’s really easy to deploy so that might make the difference.
Hey Sam ,, what are you using to get those " away" look shots up off the bow ? It looks like your holding some type of tether ,, but I cant see what it us your using ,,,, thanks.
Sam its not good for your frontsail that your spinnaker beam is leaning against it. Its not good for your mast and your jib with too much wind your mast can crack In the vid min 4:35 you can see it
Really? Thats how Ive alway flown it when i have to reach i square it to the wind. Its hard for me to imagine it damaging my jib or mast. Have you heard of it happening?
@@samholmessailing my grand dad has a sailing boat to a westerly conway 36 2 masts but on his old boat his mast was seeing some bending after he sailt across the ocean with it not a big bent but you can see it with the naked eye he sailed with the spinnaker al the way up the whole journey
This was great! I thoroughly enjoyed the paragliding and the differences between yours and Andre’s . His was like a race car compared with everyone else’s 4door sedan’s! Everyone should look great with it, although he’s like part bird …..I have a feeling you’ll have one of the lighter ones soon too, you looked like you were enjoying it.
another great episode, blah blah blah, you've inspired me, yada yada, but I must point out, that was A sausage cut up in pieces, not Sausages, as you claim, sir.
Sam, you're missing out on the american dream 9-5, drone work, mortgage, car payments, hausfrau, kids, slowly sinking into debt How many people watch your vids, drink in hand, wondering where they went wrong
Did you say, 100ft waves 😬 I got dragged into a headland in rough seas a few weeks back, hit by 10ft waves and it knocked my bost over half a dozen times! Ever so strange watching my mast head touching the water. One of them... Im guna die moments! Dislocated my shoulder holding on
He played the snake in "The Great Kapok Tree" when he graduated from Children's House. His "costume" was a stuffed snake draped around his neck. The teacher added toy sunglasses to the snake bc Sam always had sunglasses on when he went out to play. It was kind of his trademark even then. Gotta protect those baby blues.
You are awesome .... channel should be called "Sam Holmes the Sky's the Limit Sailing Canvas and Wing" .. Too bad they didn't have bigger swells to look at while soaring? Oh well...Loved the episode.😊
Good point on the spinniker pole - keep it perpendicular to the wind and lifted so that the foot of the kite is as level as possible. They are effective downwind and very pretty. If you want to get rich, figure out a cleat that automatically plays out spinniker sheet as the boat heels excessively to avoid broaching.
Sam....I am new to following your channel but am inspired by the content and huge sense of adventure your convey. I once read a book called Shrimpy about a man who bought a small boat and sailed around the world and that dream of 'if only I could....." was triggered....your vids are Shrimpy in the digital world.....love watching them. Thanks. What camera and pole are you using on the great shots on this video please??
