Due to its connection with the concept of "Gekokujo" (The Lower topple the higher), in this Samurai film review, we look at Akira Kurosawa's 1957 film "Throne of Blood".
"Throne of Blood" is the property of Toho Co., Ltd.

Let me offer a counter argument regarding the lack of other character development: When the audience gets nothing from the protagonist's friends-soon-to-be-enemies, it heightens the paranoia/mystery for the audience as well. Would his lifelong friend set him up for a fall? Are they really after him? Are they planning an attack, or will trees come alive? Did everyone know right away that the protagonist was the author of treason, rather than renegade guards? I would argue that character development or reactions of the other characters would spoil the paranoia. It's a one-sided story in the mind of the protagonist fueled by his wife.

exactly , there is a lot of internal diologue asking about the events, makes you fell deeper into de paranoia aspect, i guess the shogunate is an expert in cinema like akira was, lol.

When I saw it a number of years back I was amazed at Isuzu Yamada - it seemed to me that every movement she made had purpose. The scene where she tries to wash the blood from her hands is absolutely amazing. If you have an opportunity to see this film, do so. Toshiro, as stated, is also amazing in this.

This is probably the best M*cbeth adaptation, even if it alters certain elements to fit a Japanese setting better. The main difference is the ending, I don't remember whether this film even has a Macduff equivalent or he was cut completely, but in the original he is the one to slay M*cbeth in a duel on the battlefield. I did however love that his own men turn on him (although Kurosawa was a bit of a dick for endangering Mifune with real arrows, that fear is very much not acting).

It's never referred to as 'M......' but 'The Scottish Play',theatrical tradition has it that to pronounce the full name brings bad luck. Those who cannot fathom or appreciate this film should stick with Sonny Chiba as it is an absolute classic,Mifune is magnificently moody,Yamada is scary and swings from cool calculation to utter lunacy as Lady Washizu. The castle is mist-shrouded and mysterious,appearing to almost change location,hence the two riding back and forth unable to find their bearings,it squats low like a living part of the volcanic landscape. Perhaps not a 'samurai' film as many would expect but a brilliantly filmed,gripping tale of lust for power and madness,a film that theatre-goers with an attention span of more than 5 minutes will thoroughly enjoy.

The lack of character development for the support cast is also present somewhat on MacBeth. But i agree, if they had added 15 minutes to this film and spent it on fleshing out the support cats, it would have made a great improvement

Amazing how despite the limitations of the age in which it was filmed, the Witch in Throne of Blood is legitimately one of the most terrifying characters in any movie I've ever seen. The black eyes, the stilted movements, the demonic gurgling voice which sounds like they're infested with demons. Kurosawa created something truly unsettling with this movie.

Great video about a beloved movie. However, my understanding was that it's not the castle itself that is fog-ridden and mazelike but rather the forest around it, Spider Web Forest. There's at least one scene where the protagonist and his friend are hopelessly lost in the forest. It serves as a great metaphor for darkness and madness. Just going off memory so could be wrong about this.

It was like everything was a dream, or rather, a nightmare. A nightmare movie with samurai by Akira Kurosawa. It is special, and Mifune plays the role to perfection, beautiful frames. Ah, some of the things you found limiting were "flaws" in Shakespeare's writing. He presumed his audience would "fill in" some of the characters (kabuki style, if you will). So, MacDuff and his son are only sketched in, placemarkers to MacBeth's (and especially his wife's) descent into madness and the wages of tempting Fate. The castle, similarly is only sketched in, in the simplest of forms, as suitable for small repertory stage. The fault of it is not in the movie, but its source (with apologies to both Hamlet and Hortio for mangling their quote).
@SinginVampireBlog
@SinginVampireBlog 4 года назад
Regarding the castle, since they didn't have much to built any great sets, Shakespeare would often have the characters mention where they are and what time it is so that the audience knew. But that also gives anyone who works on a play by Shakespeare alot of freedom. And yes the characters are sketchy, Macbeth is the shortest of all his plays and he probably focused and the two main characters.

@@manthathascomputer Knowledge of Macbeth is not necessary nor of the Nash equilibrium but it helps to spot it. I didn't have any when it blew me away in my teens late at night on PBS years ago and hooked me to Kurosawa. I don't know if the director stumbled upon the work of Von Neumann & Morgenstern or Forbes Nash in the 40s-50s but this movie, contrary to the Shakespearean play, is a great example of the prisoner's dilemma, which raises Kurosawa's take above the original work in my book. The genius shift, is when lord Tsuzuki wants to counterattack and propose Washizu to lead the charge, a great honor to him but also a great danger has noticed by his wife, while all safe the role of his friend/accomplice is. You don't have that in Macbeth, already full of ambition and wondering about the gains and feasibility of the murder. Here, it ups the stakes by insinuating a divulgation and a trap. In Shakespeare, the witches at the beginning are predicting the future but could be reading Macbeth's boiling mind of what he harbors. Here, since there's a danger to the status quo, you can ask yourself: is Washizu acting out of ambition or out of fear of what could be if he doesn't act or both? Would his decision be the same if he didn't know about the future? If knowing the future alternates the future, is the witch predicting the future or shaping the future by making public predictions? Things like that. Note that in A beautiful mind, the principle is not followed (scene at bar if you seen this one) and that Macbeth is not given the worst possibility, like the wife of Washizu exposed.

As a movie, the story is very intriguing even to people unfamiliar with Shakespeare such as myself. The story gets weaker as it goes along, but still enjoyable. As an action/samurai movie, this thing is boring as heck. You see hundreds of people running around, people riding horses real fast and barely anything else. No sword fights, no duel, no battle scenes, no assassination. It gives the impression of a very well funded project that doesn't know what to do with that money, so they just get tons of armor and horses and people on the screen with nothing for them to do. Those arrows at the end look like fresh straws. The character Washizu is a complete idiot, incapable of making any decision, and even fails to appear in any battle even though he is supposed to be good at it. This style over substance crap is how these movies lose the interest of many.

Not to me personally, although it upsetted me, but to art lovers. It is also insulting to the director although dead, and the actors too, ( dead as well), and their audiences, who revere this film, and for a reason. I am not someone who appreciates the abstract, that is true. I don't deny there is a heavy artistic focus in this film. My point still stands: this is boring as heck for a samurai themed movie since there is barely any fighting and impactful action scene. You could get the same story across with so much less effort, so anything more than that is just wasteful. Is it too much to ask to show at least one epic battle to establish how talented the main character is?

@@colodius But this film is not a real samurai film, at all. I have been trying to say this, but my answer got deleted, by some PC/ Internet problem. It is a film that places Machbeth into the samurai era. There are not fights, actions because that is not the focus at all. If you want to see real samurai films check out Mifune's other samurai films, because this one is only a set..if you get I mean. The samurai things are nothing but set pieces..it is a drama and it uses the story of the drama Machbeth and the Noh theatre traditions. It is not supposed to have too much action. In the drama the action is mentioned but they do not show much of it. Some actions they do, actually unlike this one, but that is not the focal point there, either. So, if you watch this film expecting a samurai film and actions you are to be disappointed. You came to the wrong film. This film has to be watched as a scary phsycological drama of greed becoming power hunger, fear and paranoia, descending into literal madness. It is about the feelings and thoughts of people, not about action.
