Yamaha. Went from a JT2-MX right to a DT-1 250, at 14 YO. That was a great Saturday. The seller knew the exhaust was clogged and bought new pipes but then lost interest. He included a new(er) stock pipe (which I used when I got old enough to register the bike) and an expansion chamber. That was a great Saturday (for me, NOT my neighbors). The pipe on it was totally clogged. I was about 110 lbs. It was 1975. I put the chamber on first. Oh, how loud. And I was about flappin' in the Wind! I know. Nothing like a YZ250. Or TZ750! 😳I have a ZX 14 today. Stupid Fast.

Brass bar is always good for throttle, clutch and brake cables. If you’re making a new nipple in brass, chamfer the hole on both sides. The entry side allows for some movement in the cable without chafing and wearing. The chamfer on the other side allows for the cable end to be mushroomed out to get a better grip when soldered. The advantage is that brass is a better material for soldering to than steel. Also, all the classic bike cables had brass nipples. Thank you for sharing

This is quite a good idea, I've been playing around with quite a bit trying to perfect it, I'm slowly getting there. One trick I've added is I made a second identical tool, except instead I cut a groove down both sides of the bolt, place it along side the other bolt in the vice to hold the wire straight and in place. Works pretty well. Thanks for the video.

I've had a similar home-made tool for at least 50 years - a gift from an old motorcycle mechanic and racer who went back to the the 1920s - he showed me his technique which included leaving the cable end a bit frayed rather than cutting it clean, but there are clearly merits to doing it either way. .

This is a great idea and a good job. I've always been one for making and repairing things that many wouldn't and I've used methods similar to you. I once used one of the 3 brass pins in an electrical plug. Unscrewed the little screw that holds the cable put my throttle cable through and just ground it into a round shape then did the screw up and soldered it. Lol. It lasted ages. Thank you for sharing your video. 📹👍

+Benjamin Trevis - They have " Cable Ferrule " at Lowes of Home Depot at the Pre-Cut Cable Section, that you can get. If you are close to Harbor-freight, they have them in a Box for $5.99 and all different sizes too. It will be easier than making your own... Since these are for " Smaller Engines " as stated in the Video. Although it is still inventive, and I gave it a Thumb's Up :D.

Very nicely done! I always kept a spare throttle and clutch cable cable tied to the originals so that if one broke the replacement was already routed and simply needed connecting and adjusting. The ends were sealed against the elements whilst they were cable tied to the originals and if applicable the cables were lubricated using an aerosol cable oiler. Good, helpful video.

I had a similar issue with a leather recliner sofa cable. Here is what I did. I had a spare round-pin UK 240v socket. I removed one of the pins, it was similar diameter. I cut it to size and screwed the screw down onto the cable (where the electric wire would have been). Fixed. I was quite impressed with how ingenious it was.

I'm retired and do small engine repairs as a hobby. Some cables can be as much as 50.00 dollars to replace on snowblowers riding mowers etc. and this tool would be a great asset to myself and my customers when a cable is broken. no ordering cables and long delivery waiting anymore. Just take out the tool and in minutes save time and money. I will definitely be making this tool for my tool box. Thank you for sharing.

...not what I expected! Nice fix. I usually take the steel pin and drill a cable sized hole in it, ream the backside where the bare cable end exits the rod hole out deep, put cable thru, fray the end, pull it up tight, then heat all up with heat sink on the cable outer side of the cable (usually the aluminum jaw vice), flux it up, and solder with tin/antimony or silver solder wire.
@sinsilius
@sinsilius 7 лет назад
The whole video I was like 'oh it's not strong enough' or something until you mentioned that this technique is only good for throttle cables :) Looks good and hopefully works good. I would flux it and get the solder to flow on the steel - that I think would be strong enough for clutch. I've done several cable tips in the past, everytime approaching a different technique. Tried just a crude electrical wire connector (the ones with bolts to tighten down the cables), tried a a piece of steel rod with drilled tight hole with countersink; the hole is for cable and the counter sink is for messed up end of cable covered with solder. THe last time I turned a cylinder with an M3 thread to tighten the cable in to the barrel (I've seen similar in universal cable fix kits). All of these worked for me no problem.

If you use an acetylene torch just light the gas with no oxygen and smoke the die you are using and that will act as a release agent for the lead or solder you will be using. Made many car battery posts using a tapered out nut and smoking the nut before placing it in position and melting lead into it. A little twist and comes right off!

Where were you 40 years ago?! Thank You, Donn. Absolute Genius. That barrel is perfect. Some guitarists use a similar technique to make their own strings. The splaying of the wire end is key. And a "Key". The cable will snap somewhere in the middle before that end separates from the barrel. It will never break except from normal wear. Keep your cables lubricated. (This is not for you, Donn. I know you know). 🤩 If you have problems with cable control, I hear you can use Fiber Optic. It will actuate your throttle and brakes and you will get crystal clear Videos by Donn. Yes. I am kidding. Hydraulic brakes are the only way to go. 🤣😂

I've just realised that I can use your approach to fix my window actuator on my car - I've been putting it off because in principal I disagree with Audi wanting to charge me $400 when I know that the part costs less than $10 and they'll only need an hour's labour, if that. The whole system is based the same principal as the throttle cable. The part I received from ebay was the wrong bloody length of cable - apparently for a different version of my car (probably for one made on a Tuesday while the seagulls were flying inland but against a westerly wind …) - the only thing that was holding me back was how to make the securing lug - I was planning on using KNEEDIT but having seen your video I've realised that I can use that same principal to make up my own cable with some bicycle brake cable. Double-whammy! Thanks, Donn :)

Good Idea -But if you put a couple strands of copper wire from a cord inside the frey it will not come apart again lead sticks to copper better than stainless steel .

At first I thought you were going to drill a hole in that 6 mil nail a bit larger than the cable, taper the back side of the hole and silver solder the cable through the nail. Well, that's what I've done for years, but no, even a better fix, you build a mold out of a bolt and a nail! Very nice!
@TweenieDevil
@TweenieDevil 7 лет назад
you should always clean the crap out of the end of the cable with an alcohol based parts cleaner spray and then dip the end in flux first before you try to solder a new end on it. I've made 100's of motocycle cables and was taught by a pro. I've been a motorcycle tech for over 20 years. Just some advice.

cantfoolme hi, level 2 pro here. You can just use extra flux and heat, no need to clean
@MacheteBushcraftAustralia
@MacheteBushcraftAustralia 5 лет назад
@@aqib2000 I would still clean it as it does not take that much more time however I'm with you. The disrupted end and flux would be plenty strong.

Instead of drilling out a bolt you could just use clay to form the mold. I've used solder on my old mopeds and bikes with good results.

I have tried lead on cables since I was 10 years old and it always pulls out on anything bigger than a throttle cable.

You can do the same thing by drilling a piece of wood with a slot in the side for the cable. That way you don’t need to screw around with a bolt.

Won’t it catch on fire when the torch hits it, to “settle” the solder?
@NorthernChev
@NorthernChev 3 года назад
@@chipper442 Sure. But, just blow the fire out and you're done. Solder melts really fast. You can flame the solder above the hold and drip it into it, or you can torch directly on the wood. Either way, the solder melts so fast it won't matter.

I just posted the same thing. I used to do this to fix bicycle cable when I was a kid. I did not have a torch but I did have a D550 soldering gun

I agree 100% Lead is way too soft. If you have an pot metal casting of some sort lying around. Old mower carburetor ect. Some grindings from that mixed in with silver solder would be super tough.
