In this video we take a walk through the dark almost 130 year old ZASM Tunnel in Mpumalanga, South Africa to the magnificent scenic Elands river waterfall on the other side. This tunnel is at Waterval-Boven and just a few kilometers from Waterval-Onder and the Five Arches Bridge. The rail was built by the Nederlandsch-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorwegmaatschappij, also called NZASM or ZASM. It was part of a plan to connect Pretoria with Lourenco Marques in Mozambique. It was connected roundabout 1894 and just a few years before the Anglo-Boer war. The president of the ZAR, Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek, President Paul Kruger, travelled down here in 1900 on his way to Clarens, Switserland. While we walk through, we talk about some of the history and why the tunnel was built.
