Throwback Thursday 6 - SUPER RARE Fansteel Black Widow Prototype Darts 

Those darts look like they’ve been there and back. Love when stuff gets used and not just stored away. Bet they could tell some stories too. Thanks to the owner for letting you share them with us.

Really nice set of darts, the history of darts is quite interesting. I mean look at how the dart and barrels etc have constantly changed and evolved over the years. Great Video ❤

My grandfather was the president of Fansteel in North Chicago IL. I have a set of these darts, and did not know thier value.

I worked for Horizon Darts when they took over fansteel (became Laserdarts)... I have two of the original sets of widow... one in black, and I had the other coated with the GOLD titanium nitride... still throw them at home a lot...

I have two sets of Black Widows 23 and 26 grams. They were Fansteel when I bought them mid 80's or earlier. I think they were billed as 95 % tungsten , but it was so long ago so I cant recall. I still throw the 23 grams and they have not shattered!

Those might be a little older than what your thinking. When I was stationed at NAS Oceana (Virginia Beach) I started playing darts and bought a set of Black Widow smooth barrels,very similar to those you showed. I think mine had a very darkish green/black color. I bought them in either 1980 or 81. Mine also had the 4wire shafts. I got what I thought was pretty good with them,then one day one of the old timers in the bar kicked my ass with a set of those big giant wooden darts! He became a teacher of mine for my remaining time in the Navy. Very nice trip down memory lane. Thanks to the guy who let you use them, and thats to you for another great video!

Worldwide; great review. I haven't even seen a set of the 100% tungsten black widows, but I've had three separate sets of the black widow darts thru the years; they were my match darts for quite some time. The first set did have the wire shafts; they were different. Thanks for this look back at some darting history.

Great video, definitely first time I’ve seen those 100%’ers!!! I’ve got several sets of widows and really enjoy their distinctive profile. Last time I sent in a set of the vintage ones for warranty around 2019 aka lifetime warranty I had an excellent experience with them, I guess they had made a bunch extra during each run of them so that have the exact dart they need to replace the one in the set that broke!!

I have a pair of my old mans match darts from the early 80s. Theres a chip out of 1 where the stem screws in to the barrel. I'm not sure if the darts came in it but he kept them in a solid wooden case which the darts with the flights on slid into. I actually lost the case by taking it to a mates house but I still play with them. In fact I was throwing them last night. Maybe I should send a pic in to WWD, there not in great condition as they have been well used 👍 Edit, forgot to say what a great set of darts along with the history of them

£400 for darts is something I'll never imagine. I'm saving for the Adrian Lewis Pixel grip darts and I thought they are expensive at around £80. Despite that they look fantastic for a 40 year old dart and it sort of makes a quite unique sound in the board which is oddly satisfying.

Your price is accurate but the timeframe is a bit late. In ‘77-78 I spent a year at McGeorge Law School in Sacramento and they had a pub and a dart team. The pub manager was able to get a distributor to come and give the dart team some deals. So the timeframe is late 70’s. Wholesale price was about $130-140. Those are the original style shafts but I highly doubt that they are the originals, I’ve been thru a ton of shafts over the years, I stock up when I see them. They look original right down to the hole towards the bottom. What do you think they’re worth today? Haven’t played much the past two years, but when I do play, that’s all I use. They’re built like a tank. Thanks

I believe that Fansteel Darts were produced by Fansteel, Inc - a US speciality metals manufacturing company founded in 1914. They were based in North Chicago, Illinois. I have a brand new Fansteel leather dart case from around 1980, as well as some side entry stems and flights for their Barracuda model darts - lost the darts though. I have patches (that I plan to use to make a “throwback” dart shirt) from Fansteel and Accudart (a New Jersey company). I’m not sure if either company is still in existence today.

just a wee bit melodramatic, i have a set and they are anything but fragile although that sets in better shape then mine and i have different shafts which evidently they don't make anymore so i can no longer find flights and just for the record, the retail price for a set of these tungsten BW's back in the day was $229...........

Maybe they survived this long cause the company lied and maybe there only 95%. The 100% smooth section I'd expect it to be slimmer if it was real seeing there is very little cutting out for grips. Just a thought 👍🏻
