Throwing a large fruit bowl in dark stoneware. This was a new bag and was a lot stiffer than normal, which is why it put up such a fight at the start.

Thank you so much for posting- I enjoy watching your techniques as you throw. Can you tell me the weight of your clay was for this bowl?

It was 2kg for this

Which model is it? I'm trying to decide between the Elite with SSX Motor upgrade and leg and shaft extensions, or the Steven Hill which comes with the upgrades installed.

Hi. When you are pulling your walls what is the position of your hands? is the inside hand higher than the outside hand?

What type of clay do you use and how dry is it? I can't actually cone my stoneware clay up as you do without my hands immediately sticking and twisting the clay body.

I use a couple of different stonewares, but that probably just means you need to throw with more water. Mine will stick if I throw too dry, so I just keep chucking water on as I go

Thanks for doing this video. Much appreciated. How many pounds of clay did you use?
@OldForgeCreations
@OldForgeCreations 3 года назад
This would have been around 2kg, so about 4.5lbs

Is that a diy splash pan? I have a Shimpo RK Whisper (the heavy wheel with the solid silver base & yellow splash pan with slight shelf that comes apart in two pieces). I’d love a better splash pan with more room to get at scraps without need to take apart so often for full on cleaning with the hose. I don’t have a utility sink yet, just part of a barn for a studio.

Lovely to watch! Can you please answer a question for me? I’m quite new to throwing and seem to get smothered with slip up to my elbows and yet you use more water but throw beautifully clean - how?? Many thanks for posting your videos.

I think it's the extra water that helps. It stops the slip thickening up and coating everything. I'm not sure how well my approach would work on another wheel but the pan on my Skutt holds so much water than I can throw very wet. It also probably wouldn't work if I threw too slowly as the clay would get saturated after a while, but seems to be fine for anything thrown in 10-15 mins or less and is definitely fine for 2-3 minutes for mugs and smaller bowls

Old Forge Creations thanks for your reply, I’ve plenty of room in my pan so will use more water. Much appreciated.

Thank you for the demo... a little clearer shot of the rib you're using next time? This was helpful.

I noticed you did not wire the bowl off the bat… I have done that with plates and I have found that by the time they come off the bat, they can often be drying too uneven a rate for my own good. That doesn’t happen with the bowls?

Hope this isn't a silly question but what do you do with all the waste water? I guess you can't just throw it down the drain as it's full of clay residue.
@OldForgeCreations

It's a very good question, as you're right that you can't throw it down a drain. I reclaim most of it. The clay sinks and leaves a layer of water on top over time, which can then be easily removed and you're left with thick clay slip which can be turned back into throwable clay. I'm also lucky in that my studio sink doesn't drain into the mains waste water, it goes to a soakaway that can accommodate a little more clay waste.

I haven't been doing this for long (less than 1 year) but ...f**** me, you're wearing a WHITE T-SHIRT!

Haha, the trick is to wear white tees you like! Then you're extra careful where you end up putting the clay
