Hi, using slip instead of water and you should be able to throw a pot without splash pan. Please keep on watch my other videos and you will find the answer in the videos.

Thank you Hsinchuen Lin !! This video has helped me immensely in throwing large platters !! I watch it before I throw, and my platters have been coming out perfect every time.....no cracks on the bottom. I use 15 ibs of clay.

Thanks! I used particleboard with veneer on the top side. I did cut the platter when finished but I have trouble editing that part into this video. The trick to cut a large platter is with your both thumbs holding down the wire on the bat and straightens the wire as much as possible and spins the wheel. It's important to cut it off when wet; otherwise it will be very hard to cut it.

Hsinchuen Lin I was just looking for an answer to that question. 😆 Wonderful, as always.

@nottonite Because there are no pin holes on my bats, and this is also a demo to show people who don't have pins on their wheels and still want to attach a bat on the wheel.

+Hsinchuen Lin - Very nice!... I'm wondering if there's a video that shows how you glazed this large platter?... I'd also really love to see how it turned out after you took it out of the kiln... Thanks for the video! :)

Your platter looks awesome and so effortless. Do you have to trim the bottom of this platter or are you thin enough on the bottom?
@Exceptionyst
@Exceptionyst 11 лет назад
How do you get the platter off the bat to trim it? 90% of the time I try to cut off plates and platters with a wire tool it comes up through the clay and ruins my piece. And thank you so very much for putting these videos up, they have inspired and taught me so much!

was that a plaster bat?? how did you get that off the wheel? did you cut it off?
@free2throw
@free2throw 13 лет назад
Why did you use veneer on your bat? Was it to make the release of your platter easier? You would still have to cut it with a wire, right?
@RollerRoy

Hi, Do you trim a foot? Or is it a flat bottom??

How do you throw so dry? I see you do not use a splash pan and it appears you use very minimal amounts of water. How do you not get friction?

When I throw a large platter, while opening up ,the middle keeps coming up, can you tell me what I am doing wrong?
@wayakamejima4771
@wayakamejima4771 7 лет назад
Pushing down too much. I used to have this problem with porcelain, but when opening up on really soft clay, you don't need to push as hard because it is very responsive. Also, the angle of your fingers plays a role. If I push straight down with my thumb, clay is forced out of the way. It goes to both sides of my thumb. If I angle my thumb so that the thumbprint is facing the wall a little, almost all of the clay goes that way. Of course, if you are throwing lids with knobs, pushing straight down is what you want.

i know this is quite late, but using a wooden rib to smooth it out or the side of your palm to do pulls are two very helpful methods

Using wetter clay means he doesn't need to wet his hands as much, so there is very little mess.

How do you take this size platter from the bat?
@AyanaSioux
@AyanaSioux 6 лет назад
Nora Dekovich from the looks of it, he's using a plaster bat which will generally become extremely easy to remove once it teaches leather hard, which is the perfect stage for trimming.
@disisdkat
@disisdkat 11 лет назад
Plaster board would not come that thick and would not be a good material for this. It is more than likely made out of countertop material - but it does not look like the typical laminate on particle board...

Great video! Amazing result for such a large piece. If you are interested, I just completed a documentary short film about an Australian family of potters -- actually the largest pottery of its kind in Australia. It's now on youtube "Robert Gordon Australia -- Family". You may be interested in their approach to making, and the way they work hand-in-hand with their clients. Lovely family too.
