I am an Orthodox priest. Early one morning during orthros I fell asleep and in my sleep I saw a long dead aunt who begged me to help her by my prayers. I did so and my peace of mind was restored. Since then I have spent much more time praying for the dead than ever before whether or not they are Orthodox or not. And remember that those whom you might consider evil are the very individuals who most need your prayers.

How do you know that wasnt a demon, tempting you to the sin of idolatry? Scripture repeatedly warns against communicating with the dead. “And when they say to you, “Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,” should not a people inquire of their God? Should they inquire of the dead on behalf of the living?” Isaiah 8:19

@@thesheep6248we Orthodox already pray for the dead. Even if it was a demon, what possible end game was in mind? Reminding a priest to pray for certain people more? We should all be so blessed with such a demon, helping with our prayer life in such a way. Edited: just realized your not Orthodox and your opinion doesn't matter in matters of the faith. Also, you should attend to your own sins more than trying to get us Orthodox to change our ways. Seems to me that one you might struggle with is pride, thinking that you need to save us poor Orthodox from our own teachings given to us by Christ and His saints. God bless you and grant you many years. Christ is Risen! ☦️ PS. I'm glad you enjoy the Holy Scriptures canonized by our one holy, catholic, and apostolic church!

I am Roman Catholic, and this brought a tear to my eye, because it is in contrast to "Hell is Eternal" and "Those in Hell chose Hell because they always rejected God unto death" and "Only Heroes go to Heaven, Cowards go to Hell"- but what you describe is such a loving God that even those who presumably rejected Him, He still wants to comfort, like the father to the prodigal son.
@BibleIllustrated
@BibleIllustrated 6 лет назад
Well, I don't disagree with what you wrote about hell. :D Thing is, there is a difference in terminology in the Orthodox Church: ''Hades'' is the abode of all the dead until the Resurrection where they await for their punishment and reward; the state of these souls can be improved via prayer. However, that ends with the Last Judgement when hell (and the Kingdom, in its full, open, manifest glory) appears. I plan to make a 'Wrath of God' series, where I will, among other things, comment on the eternity of hell and its nature.

I enjoy your videos and I always appreciate when you include Catholic Saints as I am a Catholic myself who attends an Eastern Catholic parish even though I'm Latin Rite. When the Eastern Orthodox speak about Hell do they distinguish between the Hell of an eternal damnation and the Hell of purification what Westerners would call purgatory? I have heard it said by Eastern Catholics that they believe in the same thing as Purgatory only they don't call it Purgatory they call it Hades and it's a place of darkness, gloom, and waiting. If so I would love to see a video about that subject because quite frankly there really isn't a lot of information on the internet about the eastern concept of a place of purification.

Ecclesiastes 9:4For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. 5For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. 6Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion forever in any thing that is done under the sun.

I was given the Book of Akathists, Vol. 1, which contains the Akathist for the Departed. I was inclined to read this Akathist because I remembered a sibling that died before birth, that I had forgotten for nearly 30 years. That Akathist is very awesome. I cried the whole time and had to stop a few times. On another occasion, that book fell out of my truck into the snow. Since it is a gift and I want it to be cosmetically perfect, I brought it inside to wipe it off and make sure there is no snow in it. I began reading that Akathist again. I was not able to finish it.

This was very facsinating. The idea of the living praying and improving the condition of the dead, as well as the story of the ascetics. I especially like how you describe unique prayers and how beautiful they are, I wasn’t raised like that in a baptist church. We had our father and after that you just asked for things(not that they couldn’t be selfless like praying for a loved one.) then I eventually learned of things like the hail mary’s and others. I’ll definitely check these prayers out. The ending with souls thanking you while dying was also nice.

St Ambrose of Optina taught his spiritual children to pray for the repose of non-Orthodox departed thus: “Seek out, O Lord, the soul of Thy departed servant (Name), departed this life in separation from Thy Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church. May not this my prayer be counted as sin, but may Thy holy will be done.” As you mentioned, the holy Martyr Varus (Уар, Οὔαρος) is invoked very often because he has received special grace to pray for the unbaptized or the heterodox. Shrines to him have popped up all over Russia now that the Soviet yoke has been removed.

God cannot save only those who don't want to be saved. And that kind of people are those who put anything else before their relationship with God. Some do it out of pride (those who "gnash their teeth" in the Bible), some out of false belief, laziness, etc. (those who "weep"). As far as the others go, well... They can't do anything to change their state, that's unquestionable. The very least thing God does if we ask for it is to ease their pain. It's quite complicated and no one knows for sure. All I can say is that our prayers cannot redeem anything - only God can do that. Yet, a good father fulfills the wishes of his children if they are correct.
@1984potionlover
@1984potionlover 5 лет назад
@@thewildchimp So you are saying that God isn't stronger than some human who is obviously is obstinate and ignorant. God can by his very nature do anything he wants to do. Ultimately it is up to God when and for how long someone is punished. Since what happens after death is a whole different existence I wonder what point there is to eternal damnation, if you cannot learn from the punishment and slowly come back in to God's grace . It's not like letting a murderer out into the public to go back to evil practices. God knows when an who might yet find be cleansed by "fire'' or whatever Hell really is. Sometimes I wonder if God only tells us what we are capable of grasping and that might be pretty basic...his over all plan could well be far beyond the ability of mortals to understand. Perhaps eternal damnation is the worst possible scenario,and we hear only about that, because God know just how obstinate and dense we can be. Throwing in maybes, or what ifs, or saying..well yes, eventually you'll get out of Hell, if you do the time and learn to be "good", then you won't be "grounded" from my presence any more... Knowing humans, he knows full well that people are willing to gamble, or procrastinate well past the point of safety, so he labels the consequences by severity (maybe?) to get more of his creation to not make bad choices or re evaluate their choices before there literally is 'Hell to pay", and it is going to be much harder,way more painful, messy and complicated to perhaps get back where they should have been in the first place. Now I know I am being wonky about doctrine etc., and perhaps I am indulging in wishful thinking... I just don't think we really understand very much about the bigger picture or how God does things...we only are given what we might comprehend,but what we don't know about God, towers over the highest mountains. Our understanding is a best infantile and we must have simple faith that God is going to do whatever he see fit. Humans may be lost in Time, and Spce...but that's only because we're a little thick, and a little slow ;)

@BibleIllustrated 5 лет назад
Actually, it's like this: Aquinas: Salvation is impossible without baptism. THEREFORE, St. Gregory must have resurrected Trajan and had him baptized. Me: Nah.
@l.s.8201
@l.s.8201 5 лет назад
Ohh, I guess I misunderstood. My bad! But I'm quite certain the words of St. Thomas Aquinas are also held by the Orthodox Church as truth, as our Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation in John 3:5, so I wouldn't say it's fair to just point the finger at us, Catholics. It's a similar position both the Catholic and Orthodox profess, that there is no salvation outside the Church. But do we hold it as an absolute truth? I'm confident that we both hope for and believe in salvation of faithful Christians outside our denomination and I would say, justifiably so, for God's grace has no boundaries! Now, if St. Gregory did resurrect Trajan, we don't know. St. Thomas Aquinas saw the contradiction in the Gospel and the salvation of Trajan and expressed an alternative theory, to justify it. And if his theory is false, we shouldn't be too harsh, for even the greatest of Saints can be in such error.

God bless you brother Bojan, I have a queation concerning that part where you told the story when a priest was praying for the soul of s/o who did suicide... If I understood you right, he regreted his suicide right before he died... so therefore the priest could pray for him? But as we know in our church it's forbidden to pray for those who do suicide, so how can we know if they truly regreted it and said a prayer right before they died? It's kind of a complicate question, I hope you could follow :) Thanks for your response and God bless you all. Also thanks for your incredible work!
@BibleIllustrated
@BibleIllustrated 6 лет назад
Well, the Church does not forbid all prayer for suicides, only memorial services and commemorations on the proskomede, tho a lot of bishops allow it. I recall of a priest who's had a vision of hell where the suicides are, and he narrated that the place was so oppressive that all people there needed *a lot* of prayer. So, just keep praying for them and, if you know personally someone who's ended their life, ask for a priest's permission for them to be commemorated during the Liturgy. :-) A friend of mine committed suicide in 2009 so I investigated the issue a bit.
@1984potionlover
@1984potionlover 5 лет назад
@@BibleIllustrated Are there Biblical prohibitions against prayer for the dead, suicide, or otherwise, or is this, like so many things something that was made up by humans and not a teaching from God. There's lots of times when people have claimed divine inspiration to bolster their own plans or ideas, and lots of times where people were not aware where the origins of some "laws" and traditions actually came from... i'll leave it at that, beyond not underestimating what people who find themselves in positions of power to affect change do; and not all are inspired by God, but are passed on to others as if they were. We must beware and be awrae of false teaching, and teachers, and be knowledgeable enough to recognise that which is false. it isn't always going to be recognizable straight away. It's not as if someone who is trying to pull a fast one is going to let you know their real intentions... Are you saying that the damned can be brought out of hell through prayer? Do you think that one day Judas will be saved, or even Satan? I guess my question is this: can the damned be saved and if so, what criteria must be met??
@BibleIllustrated
@BibleIllustrated 5 лет назад
There's no 'criteria,' in my opinion. We can never know for sure. I don't know about Judas (not an optimist in that regard), and I'm fairly certain Satan cannot be saved. And yes, I think that the damned can be saved. Usually, whenever there is a story of someone being saved from hell, they had some good deed or act of charity. Trajan got out of hell because he helped out a certain widow.

I don’t wanna sound like a Protestant, but is there any scriptural grounds for people entering hades instead of hell?
@tfan2222

Consider that what is translated as “Hell” (or any variation thereof) refers to either 2 concepts in the original languages and culture the scripture was written in: the grave and the destruction of the wicked. By this measure, I’d argue that the very notion of eternal torment has no genuine basis.

@@BibleIllustrated I really do enjoy your videos btw. Just want to state there before going further. “Each one will be presented to the Judge exactly as he was when he departed this life. Yet, there must be a cleansing fire before judgment, because of some minor faults that may remain to be purged away. Does not Christ, the Truth, say that if anyone blasphemes against the Holy Spirit he shall not be forgiven “either in this world or in the world to come” (Mt 12:32)? From this statement we learn that some sins can be forgiven in this world and some in the world to come. For, if forgiveness is refused for a particular sin, we conclude logically that it is granted for others. This must apply, as I said, to slight transgressions.” Pope Saint Gregory the Great, Dialogues, 4:39 (A.D. 594). I think he spoke more on it somewhere else but ill find it and edit it later. But to say we can cast fish hooks with our prayers to lift the dead out of hell seems wrong even in the EO church. in other videos you said, purgatory is merit based but how ist this either the same thing? Other then the fact hell is eternal and therefor prayers for the damned are useless?

I recently found this channel and I’m in love. I grew up in a Protestant background-I was baptized in the Methodist Church as a baby, but as a little kid my family moved us to a new church, which I am still a part of. It is considered nondenominational but it would not be wrong to call it evangelical. So that’s my background but there’s an inkling in me that I need to search more, perhaps into Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. One of the things that hinder me, though, is this sort of shaky idea of who is in heaven and hell. I grew up believing hey you accepted Jesus into your heart as your savior? You’re going to Heaven! But with Catholicism and orthodoxy, what I gather is this sort of understanding that you don’t know where you’ll end up, which is terrifying to me. So here’s my question: if Christ died for our sins and we accept his gift of salvation, (under catholic/orthodox understanding) why would someone who has done this go to hell? Also, for people who have not accepted Christ but do end up going to heaven, how in the world would that work? Just because they did something “good”? But wouldn’t both situations suggest we can save ourselves with good works, which would mean Christ’s sacrifice wasn’t enough to save us? I’m sorry if this is jumbled and doesn’t make sense but in my pursuit of truth I have found this channel and it would mean a lot to me if someone could enlighten me and give me encouragement on my journey ❤️

Christ's sacrifice does not infringe on our free will. The Lutheran philosopher Sören Kirkegaard defined sin as an action based on anything but God. A lot of people accept Christ only to fulfill their own selves, or use him as a tool for self-realization, rather than loving him. They as such create a god in their own image. Look at all the proud people who follow Christ only fill a personality trait or feel virtuous. Or those stuck with the prosperity gospel charlatans, who pray to Christ to gain prosperity. Once they loose this world and all its mundane riches, they will be empty, and feel the devastation for ever. That is why confession is so important to any Christian who wants to receive the Eucharist. Confession forces people to humble themselves and realize that they are in fact sinful and need to repent. They will not make excuses for their sins anymore, they will simply ask Christ to cleanse them from these sins so that they can move on. According to St James in the Scriptures, what good is it if a man in good faith tells a homeless man to go in peace to a warm home and eat well? That is what faith without acts is. A man can have faith in Christ, but if that faith does not manifest in actions of love, then it is simply dead. His faith becomes a mere acknowledging of the existence of God, as if God's only importance were to exist. InspiringPhilosophy made a video on the matter of Hell recently which I can recommend to you, brother.

@@DonutKop One looks Eastern Orthodox but recognizes the pope of Rome as the sole head of the Catholic Apostolic church and thus believes in all its doctrines established Ex Cathedra by said popes, including the doctrine of Papal suppremacy, purgatory and so on. The other one is simply part of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is united in communion and has established its doctrine through the councils and believes all patriarchs to be equal but some having a higher respected role, such as the Pentarchy and also the pope in Rome. No one of them is infallible, but they are first among equals. That is the difference.

Of course our prayers save souls, God gives that power. :-) Take example from exorcisms. Of course us men cannot influence demons in any way, but by love of God, we can via prayer :-) Same thing here. We don't save them personally, of course, it is still very much up to God.
