Throwline skills are foundational in climbing and rigging. Let's take a look at one of my absolute favourite techniques for setting lines fro the ground: double bagging / double lining.

What an amazing explanation of technique. So many others would have insisted on being outside, next to a tree trunk, mumbling in the wind and cursing as they 'failed' to miss the correct crotch. The mini-tree was a great idea and it worked really well. Thanks once again for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us.

Really great technique and explanation. The bonsai tree was perfect, on a real scale tree we would probably even not see the throw lines. Great video 👍

Your demonstration on that small tree was absolutely perfect!!! I have never climbed a tree in my life, I'm going to be 71 in October and want to learn how to climb trees for fun. What you taught me will never be forgotten. Thank-you. Oh yeah, I'm starting to hunt with a bow in tree stands is actually how all of this got started. P

I've been a climber for almost 4 years. I started carrying a second line about 2 years ago but always felt it was only backup for if my first got stuck. Usually the reason I got stuck was because I was trying to finesse my first line into the desired crotch with lots of wasted time and frustration. Today I had to set several lines in quick succession and these techniques saved me so much time and frustration. Thank you so much for these tips! Every new climber should learn this right off the bat.

Yeah that’s a a awesome trick man. Great stuff. You should make a video about how you choose what crotches to look for and how you determine what crotches are good for natural rigging or your TIP. That would be very helpful. Edit: nvm I found your videos explaining the rigging. I’m going to watch them now. lol thanks again for the great content and I enjoy watching your videos. 💯👍🏻

Great video thanks. A couple more tips, if you completely miss your crotch on a throw and there's no way to get to it, remove the bean bag before retrieving your line from the tree. If you try to retrieve your line with your bean bag attached it will very likely get it stuck in the tree. Second, it's good to grab onto both lines at the same time so you can manipulate your bean bags. For example it's real easy to get the bean bags swinging if you're holding onto both lines a at the same time. Very important like you said to add more weight because of the added friction of two lines in the tree.

That was an excellent demo. I find myself as a better throwball thrower than my statistics show cuz I work around alot of busy trees. Usually I hit my crotch but go above & beyond & the double lining is the key. I have a green line that I back up with a red line with 3 different throw bags ➕ I keep small carabiners on my saddle. Better to do this method than to let your ball go all the way to the ground & take the ball off & the line & start all over. Thanks 😊

For years people asked me why do you have extra throw bags ? sometimes They lost ( stuck in a tree ) or damaged.. I need an extras for thy reason. here you have an exceptional exclamation ! Of what I’ve been trying to explain to many climbers. 😎🤓🌳🧠z
@PeterDrinnan
@PeterDrinnan 3 года назад
Brilliant! As I pretty much miss every crotch I ever aim for this is a lifesaver. Btw when I started practicing I lost 2 expensive throw bags (on the same day which was demoralizing). Started practicing again using heavy steel nuts (50 cents each) which gave me a comparable weight. Just be sure not to be around any cars, houses, kids or pets while practicing.

Awesome job on demo Patrick, the struggle now is getting the rope over the branch once isolated, I do a girth hitch with 3-4 half wraps ending with a girth hitch on end of climbing rope, pull the rope to isolated branch then the end of rope stops it from going over! I’ve thought about turning a cone on lathe with string coming out center, any tips would alleviate my frustration! Thanks again for your experience!!

Hey! This is awesome stuff I just have one question. For those of us who only have one line to deal with, couldn't you just attach a weight midline to your first throwline and pull it up then let come down over the branch you want? Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to do that? Thanks! Awesome stuff like always
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM 3 года назад
There are times when that works, depends on the height of the crotches vs the length of your throwline... I used to do a lot of that before double lining... Cheers - Patrick
