This is part 3/3 of my 2021 southbound thru-hike of the Arizona Trail. The AZT is an 800 mile National Scenic Trail that traverses the length of the state of Arizona from the Utah state line to the border with Mexico.
This final part of my hike begins at the Picketpost trailhead near Superior, AZ and ends at the Southern terminus of the AZT. Taking place almost entirely in the Sonoran Desert aside from patches of the Chihuahua Desert, some highlights of this final part of my thru-hike include the Gila River, Kearny, Mount Lemmon, the Santa Rita Mountains, Patagonia, the Rincon Mountains, and finally the least beautiful part of the entire hike, the US/Mexico border wall.

I really liked your series. It was a great way for me to see parts of the trail I have not done before. Congratulations!

Thank you for documenting your thru-hike. It was really nice. I think it's the first one I've watched that was a SOBO hike. Also, thanks for putting the segment name and number in the bottom left corner as you hiked. That's great information for future thru-hikers. Again, thanks!

I appreciate the comment! There are very few sobo azt hikes on RU-vid so I’m glad you found mine and enjoyed that perspective of the 800 miles! Currently editing more hiking videos and a Colorado trail thru hike video so lookout for that👍🏼

It was nice sharing your journey in a positive/honorable fashion (you left water for others when you had enough to get to next station as opposed to using the Trail Angel supply).

Thank you! As my first thru hike and one I had always planned sharing on RU-vid, I wanted to set a good example for new hikers. Lookout for my Colorado Trail video soon!

Really nice series. I live in Tucson, too, so I know a number of these passages somewhat, though I haven't yet through-hiked the AZT. Some friends and I often go camping near that tall, steel tank in the Black Hills. We call it Algae Tank. That whole area is pretty sweet. I've biked a few miles on that section and walked all over those hills, on and off trail. And I've been doing the hike from Redington Pass up the Italian Spring trail on the north side of the Rincons nearly every September for a few years. Amazing place. Makes for a good 3-day weekend. Thanks for sharing your walk. Looking forward to your Colorado Trail vids.

I was born and raised in Tucson and I can’t believe this was my first time actually hiking up the Rincons, such a great section, would love to hike it nobo now. Glad you enjoyed man!

Hey samir! Great video brother. I like how connected you are to nature when did you finish the hike? Like what month and stuff. I'm near Oracle and just wondering. Thanks again for sharing your passion brother

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I started 10/1/21 and finished 11/11/21. I hope you checkout the AZT near Oracle if you haven’t already. As someone from Tucson, hiking from Oracle to Vail along the Catalinas and Rincons was one of my favorite parts of this hike

Congrats on this hike! I loved the vids, really well done! I even took the opportunity to read about some local history with Oak Flats. It's a shame we can't seem to have more respect and integrity when dealing with tribal lands. Also, I'm planning on taking on a few AZT passages this Fall/Winter and using a trekking pole tent setup. Did you have any problems with getting stakes into the ground? Thx and all the best!

Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I have more I need to post from other thru hikes since this AZT one. I did not have any issue with stakes and highly recommend a trekking pole tent!

Thanks Samir! I liked your style of video. How many times did you have to clean your filter and did that platypus bag hold up?💚
@habibihikes
@habibihikes 10 месяцев назад
I cleaned my filter every time I got into a resupply town so maybe every 5 days. But I would say I got lucky and only ended up needing to filter water maybe 10 times the entire hike due to the large amount of cached water available at trailheads and forest road intersections

How did you learn gain your knowledge about plants, land features / peaks and animals?
@habibihikes
@habibihikes Год назад
Honestly I would say just from hiking a lot. I’ve only been learning this stuff for about 3/4 years now and it all comes from buying foraging/geology books as well as using plant identification apps like “Picture This”. You just take a pic of a plant and it will tell you what it is/more info on it. Sometimes it’s wrong but you learn!

How do you keep so a minimal pack for the AZT?
@habibihikes
@habibihikes Год назад
When I started I had an extra camera, tripod, and rain gear. I got rid of the three of those and that saved me about 6/7 lbs of unnecessary weight. I think the lack of intense weather makes the AZT easier to pack light for, but it’s so hot and dry that you are better off budgeting your pack weight with extra water for long carries.

How much training, and hiking did you do for this Azt?Thanks!
@habibihikes
@habibihikes 10 месяцев назад
I was doing a lot of day hikes and a few backpacking trips in the Seattle area before this hike to prep! I think the backpacking helped a lot more than day hikes though because it involved carrying a similar pack weight that I had during the azt thru hike

Good idea! I’m currently editing footage from my hike of the Colorado trail. I’ll try to make a 2022 gear review that includes what I used on the Arizona trail.
