It says everything about the current state of our country that Jacob Rees Mogg was knighted this year for a career as a professional toady and Richard Noble, despite masterminding 2 world land-speed records along with all the associated engineering projects and fantastic publicity he has brought to the UK, remains (ironically) not ennobled. He's been a hero of mine since those early pre-record appearances on Tomorrow's World and remains so today, and thanks to Scarf and Goggles for such a fantastic in-depth interview and retrospective

They came to a former RAF airfield (Leconfield) in East Yorkshire to do their shakedown runs. Amazing standing by the side of the runway as it came past at speeds of 250, up to 400 MPH. And standing a few feet from the beast as they did a tethered engine test. One their guys (Ron) achieved a life time ambition to break the sound barrier - which he did by being towed down the runway while sitting in a 'Portaloo'!

This is simply brilliant. A fantastic 'boys-own story' that has all the makings of a blockbuster movie, including the seeming disaster before the final triumph which accompanies all of these types of film. In today's terms, the budgets they had were pin money, but the drive, expertise and ultimately, the irrepressible bravery of Richard Noble allowed them to perform the impossible feat in its day. Can't wait for episode 3!

@630lsr 11 месяцев назад
Richard Noble did indeed set the absolute world land speed record in 1983. However, it was on a technicality, since it did not break The Blue Flame's 630.388 mph absolute world record in the kilometer by 1%. The Blue Flame's mile record was 622.407 mph - Richard got that one. The absolute world record is the fastest FIA world land speed record. So, now the fastest FIA world record was the mile flying start record at 633 mph, not the 630 mph kilometer world record then still held by The Blue Flame. Andy Green would get that one, too, in 1997 in the supersonic Thrust jet car. It was unfortunate The Blue Flame sponsors erroneously publicized the 622 mph mile record, and never corrected it later.
