Chris you make this stuff look easy. I sure would like to have had a CNC machine in the old days for reparative work, but this one off stuff would have been allot easier with NC. really enjoy your videos with the actual drawings to see what folks like you are actually working from. Please keep the videos coming.

That's the type of machining I use to program and turn out before becoming disabled 8 years ago. Enjoyed watching as always as it reminds me of my machining days. Keep up the good fight.

For parts this large: how much oversize do you leave after roughing the part out? Do you take one or two 'finishing' passes? Thank you for the great videos.
@ChrisMaj
@ChrisMaj Год назад
For something like this I'll leave around 1/8" on diameter. Long shafts, large diameters I'll leave 1/4" then do semi-cut down to about 0.100" . Most of the time I'll take two finishing passes. I can't afford to scrap parts of this size.
@larryblount3358
@larryblount3358 Год назад
@@ChrisMaj thank you. A 0.100 (or 2 0.050) finishing passes. LoL. On my lathe a 0.040 cut is huge. And my finishing passes are 0.005. Enjoy seeing how you do all the ops.

@1:56 Listening to that CNC spool up as it cuts still seems strange to me! I *know* it's to keep the SFM right, but I did all my (limited) machining on manual machines. And another question: @6:11 or so. What is that groove on the top of the tool holder for? I've seen them before, but I don't get what it's purpose could be. Or is that an "artifact" from a previous "event"?
@nathannagel7034
@nathannagel7034 Год назад
Its probably to direct coolant to the tip of the insert
@PhilG999
@PhilG999 Год назад
@@nathannagel7034 That DID occur to me! 😁
@ChrisMaj

There was a guy that used to work with me, he always tried to improve things, he made that groove to guide the coolant, but tell you the truth, it doesn't do shit 😅
@PhilG999
@PhilG999 Год назад
@@ChrisMaj I can see that from the vid! That's why I asked about it. To me if there was a rounded groove it would flow better. As it is, it actually looks like it's dividing the coolant stream and actually *reducing* the coolant reaching the insert.

Hey Chris, you might have already answered this in the past, but my first question is how are your parts not tapered while machining? And also do you hand program each project?
@Lewyhowe
@Lewyhowe Год назад
I think he uses Fanuc Manual Guide to program from what I’ve seen, easy to program a taper in there if your machine has one
@ShainAndrews
@ShainAndrews Год назад
@@Lewyhowe Read again....
@ChrisMaj
@ChrisMaj Год назад
For short parts like this, this lathe is doing really good, I might get 0.002" taper on longer shaft, but then I'll just compensate that in my program. Most of my programming is done with conversational programming and G-codes.

See, I just don't understand how you do this. Don't you have to "dial in" your finishing tools? You can run a roughing NC program all day, but when it comes to the finishing pass with a different tool, how are you holding tight tolerances running an NC program? If the program is written to the finish dimension, and you gauge it and it's too big, what do you do.....run it again with an offset? If it's too small, then you got junk.
