This is what racing was all about. I can smell the Castrol R40. Love the shot at the embankment, sure there was a Mk1 RS Escort there. And great to hear Murray's commentary. The sound of those motors. Thanks, Andy. :)
I remember watching this in 1981! Great to see it again. Incredible that Imps had been out of production for five years and were giving away at least 300cc to every other car there. (Yes, I know they are space frame but you get my point)
And this afternoon on Grandstand: Figure skating from Helsinki; racing from Haydock, rugby union from Aberavon, boxing from Hornchurch and saloon car racing from Thruxton.
That was nostalgic. I looked up my old photos of Donnington Park 1980 - Donnington GT series. One photo from Redgate corner with the Peter Baldwin mini, and X19 and loads of imps. I think there must have been a separate class for 'mad' space frame cars like the ones in the video. Drivers - George "welly" Potter, orange Louts Esprit with 5L engine, Tony Sugden, Skoda, Mick Hill, VW beetle and Skoda, probably many more too. Never went to Thruxton, always Donnington as it was withing cycling distance!.
The very best of mod saloon racing. By the way, not that it matters, because it's a mini so no one cares; that Peter Baldwin version had a Manx conversations gearbox adapter to take a Ford X-flow block pattern, on his it's a 1300cc BDH which reputedly had 180 bhp. More interesting than that, they had previously built an Imp engine to mini adapter as used by Ginger Marshal? 🤤🤯 in previous years but the imp unit had ran out of development by the mid 70's. It was indeed costs that killed this championship. 😒
