I NEVER leave RU-vid comments but i'm leaving this in the hopes you get this feedback. This was incredibly helpful and I appreciate you taking the time to shoot this video and for being so thorough. I couldn't find anything that was anywhere close to this helpful online about these two products, let alone bike seats for children in general. Just wanted to say thanks it means a lot!

Thanks for doing this. The 2" clearance on the Yepp's mounting bracket is a good point, but as I will be installing it on a road bike, I don't think it is something I need to worry about. Also, my kid is a bit of a nut, so the 5 point harness with the difficult buckles is a selling point.

The only disappointing thing about this video is I can only give it a thumbs up once!! Thank you so much for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive video together!! I recently got a cheaper brand of baby/toddler bike seat, it's mounting system was similar to the RideAlong and it was unbelievably flimsy and flexy, so much so, I felt like my daughter was at risk of falling out of it when first used it. I'm now looking at the Yepp Maxi, because it seems so much more rigid and stable in the mounting section. I've got a road bike, so should be fine. Thanks again mate, really appreciate this video 🍻

Thanks for the comparison. I have been using the Thule for 3 years and my only complaint is that there is only one small reflector. Im only looking into different seats now because I have a new bike that is incompatible with the Thule. I thought it could be helpful to share some of the features I think are great on the Thule that I would definitely miss with the Yepp. 1. The small bars holding the seat are designed to flex and greatly reduce the impact your kid feels when you hit a bump. My kid wants me to go as fast as possible on forest trails with my road bike. 2. The arm rests / handles are great. My kid is always using them and the part of the seat below them that is wider is excellent protection for his hands when I lean my bike against a wall and , I could imagine, in the case of a crash. 3. Easily adjustable everything is a must if using the seat with two different sized children. Colin, your right. I cant imagine a bike where you would be able to slide the seat forward. Perhaps this feature is for when the seat is not mounted on the bike to make it a little more compact.

Never owned a child seat, but right off the bat the Yepp seems like a way better seat! Two massive reasons: A) It's much more comfortable with the soft foamy plastic and narrow frame that holds the kid more securely. B) The mounting frame doesn't flex nearly as much and the narrow and much lighter seat makes the bike have better balance and the kid have a smoother ride. It seems like it flexes just enough to absorb bumps on the road. Also the ventilation. Also the fact you can weave a bungie cord trough the holes and strap clothing or groceries on the back of it.

Thanks a lot I enjoyed your flic About safety : i will choose the yepp ( that already is safety award winner here in germany) One point is the belt That can easily be opened by a kid in the ridealong ( my 2 years old son is very „ intelligent „ at these things , and the other factor is the 5 vs 3 point fixation. Also , the rigit fixation of the yepp is a good think as i Drive also offroad sometime, as you said.

So I have had the Yepp Maxi for 3 years now, first kid I was super happy with it. The second kid has already figured out the two hand harness locks and he is only 2 years 5 months. I am thinking of getting the Thule for our second bike (wife’s e-Mtb) because of the mourning system being more flexible, so giving more “suspension” and the better adjustability with the straps

They have been doing great. Remember though, that the max weight is with the child fully dressed and with a helmet. I have another front seat that holds kids up to 27kg which is called the MacRide. I have another youtube video where I cover that seat and both my sons LOVE it.

Thanks for the video! Which seat do you find is safer, in the event of a bike drop or accident?
@colchilibeck
@colchilibeck 4 года назад
Oh man that is a tough question. I honestly would say they are both very safe. But the Yepp has a 5 point harness compared to the 3 point of the Ride Along. So if it was the bike being dropped, I would say the Yepp is going to be "stonger" and "safer". But I have not tried this so don't quote me!
@pagemayrand4956
@pagemayrand4956 2 года назад
that's what I was thinking about as well... from what I can see, the yepp does have the 5 point harness, but it also is very very open on the sides, where the ridealong has sides on it that would act as a barrier between the child and the ground, kind of encapsulating them...

Could you please help me out...I moved forward and went with the Thule Yepp Maxi in Orange. The seats look great; install was definitely not the easiest but well worth it on my wife and my bike, so excited to shofar our 2 girls around. The only issue I m having is it is so hard to slide the seat out of the mount and back in. What lubrication do your recommend and is safe to use on the product? I tried calling Thule multiple times no one answers and I just leave voice messages. Thank you in advance for you help.
@colchilibeck
@colchilibeck 4 года назад
Where the bracket attaches to the square part that the seat slides into can be over tightened. I would make sure that you don’t over tighten that component. I also found it very tight sliding in and out, so I use some silicone spray lubricant. It would not stain anything, or deteriorate any sort of plastic. So make sure that the bracket isn’t over tightened and try using some silicone spray. Another tip, use the silicone spray on any zippers on jackets, bags, etc.

@colchilibeck

KENNY MTB that’s a great question. Honestly I believe that both of these would interfere. Thule does make a “rack mount” option which mounts differently. But you would need a rear rack on your bike.

Hello. My bike has a front gear cable on the seat tube. Will the Thule fit?
@hobinlobo
@hobinlobo 4 года назад
I have a mountain bike with 3 chain rings at the front, the cable down the seat tube, and the tule ridealong fits fine. I'm surprised this doesn't come up more, and I remember before I bought mine it was very hard to find this info. I actually emailed Thule to ask me, and they wrote back and said it would not fit. However, they also sent me a copy of the manual, and it had a picture showing the bikes it fits with and it included mountain bikes, so I just took a chance and bought it. Anyway, long story short, the clamp that goes on the frame has a cut away that means there is room for the cable. I can't say for sure that it would be fine for every bike, but certainly fine on mine.

Hi! I have a children of 21Kg (46lb) and soon he will weight more, do you think the Yepp Maxi is more strong to carry its weight securely? I try to say, do you think is over strength that other like Ride along because its mount bar instead of thin bars? Thanks! :)

What about the max weight capacity
@webcoderltd
@webcoderltd 3 года назад
The harness buckle is a big let down from Thule who normally are the pioneers in safety solutions in car industry and may have to do my own workaround improvment. It's a tough decision and if they combined best features from both products they'd produce the best seat most people would want to have. Unfortunately, it won't happen because of marketing and profits making priorities. I've made a tough choice and bought the RideAlong seat becuase of better vertical frame positioning options (Maxxi's mounting bracket height can be limited by bike's frame thinkness as in this video in particular when you need to mount it higher because of already installed rear racks on a bike) , really nice easy and quick foot straps that are real pain in our brand new Hamax Sleepy (one nipple that holds the rubber strap just broke off possibly becuase we lean the bike against the seat when putting our child in). Other things are the easy straps adjustments which are also a pain in Hamax. Some people may say it's not a problem and you set them once - no, this is not true as we have to adjust them quite frequently whenever we put on or take off a thicker jacket so it's rather frequently used. I'd agree about using less frequently height adjustment for the straps as well as horizontal sliding seat positioning as we set it once and didn't touch it again for a long time. Another nice thing in RideAlong is arms rests and ability to tilt the seat back when our wee one goes to sleep. We use it quite often and rarely keep the seat set on maximum upward position - child's face too close to our butts and another very important reason! Namely in Hamax Sleepy there's a rotating seat forward/backward tilt adjustment large red knob which can cause injury if the child's seat is mouted too close to the rider's seat in particular when maximum back tilt position is set which rises the red know further up closer to riders seat. Basically, when we set our Hamax on maximum backward tilt position a gap beween the rotating tilt adjustment knob and the rider's seat can be about ~0.5-1cm. Now, when riding on uneven surface the child's seat tends to flex/jump up and down so when a child puts their little fingers in this gap it can SQUASH and possibly BREAK FINGERS! I've been always thinking about it while riding and thus avoiding pot holes and bumps becase was too worried it would cause such injury. Thule RideAlong has a much better and safer tilt solution underneath the seat thus leaving more room between the rider's seat and mounted child seat so bear it in mind. I do not know why engineers didn't think about such things and why Thule didn't make an additional buckle safety pin like in Hamax? They have been making these seats for years and should have now been designed to the perfection without such rather silly mistakes. One last thing - lack of universal attachments at the back of most child seats e.g. for extra higher positioned rear lights etc. - why not? I had to use zip ties on Hamax to attach a light - riddiculous! I wish I had the capability to manufacture my own seat that would combine all the best features of all - maybe a kickstart project? Anyone would be interested? Cheers, David ps. go to my website which is my username to contact me directly.

Thank you for this comparison. One last thing you could mention is, which one is more comfortable form the child's perspective? Did your kid try both of them? Which one do they prefer?
@colchilibeck
@colchilibeck 4 года назад
That's a good question. I would say that because the RideAlong can recline and has the arm rests, it would be more comfortable on a very long ride. But our son has been in the Yepp Maxi for over 2 hours with not a single complaint. Also, the Yepp is a softer/pliable plastic material that has some flex to it. The RideAlong is a rigid plastic and the padding is very thin. So really, I would say they both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to comfort.
