Thumb Button Release - My Thoughts?

Nick shoots a handheld thumb release that he bought last hunting season. Today I stole it from him to try it out! There are definitely benefits to using a handheld thumb release over a traditional wrist strap release when it comes to bow hunting, so it peaked my curiosity. Enjoy :)

John Dudley says that your release hand should match the 45 degree of your bow hand. I don’t think you want to put your hand flat on your face, hence the pinky in the ear problem, I know you’ve been watching him so thought I’d put it out there
@tonykramer9652
@tonykramer9652 4 года назад
Yes, release hand should mimic same 45 degree angle as bow hand. Straight up and down like you had it positions the string further away from face, which makes to have to adjust your head to the string more. Not ideal.

Love the content. Keep these awesome videos coming. You probably already know this but better to share than not I suppose. I think someone else may have mentioned this but I'll try to add some brief detail. When gripping the bow, we've all be told to have our knuckles at 45º. With a thumb release, you'll want your release hand to "mirror" the angle of your front hand...45º. Dudley has mentioned keeping a "flat hand" as correct form with this style of release because it keeps your DL consistent. Flat hand grip=good / Hand flat against your face = "pinky in the ear" situation (basically putting your bow hand at 45º and your release hand at closer to 90º.) Stoked to see some follow up videos on perhaps other styles of thumb releases.

I have the same release, I get what your saying, it's a bit weird to get use to it. Finding the right anchor point will take time and changing your peep sight to match. One thing I started to do is when I'm ready to shot, I put my thumb on the trigger and I push it forward to make sure it wont fire before time or by mistake. Something to think about. GREAT review, especially from the perspective of an experienced archer that is trying something new!!! I think I'm going to try a Tru-Fire with a rotating head as my first thumb style experiment. I think, (as you had issue with), I would not like my 4th and 5th metacarpals jamming into my face and ear. Once again, a great review. Thanks!

Just bought my first handheld today, Spot Hogg Whipper Snapper. I couldn’t believe how natural it felt. I was very skeptical and didn’t think it would be as comfortable as my wrist release. I was wrong My shot improved as well, so bonus! The only “drawback” hehe, I can see is it not being as concealed and easy to cary in the elk woods as a wrist release. Easy to lose without tether. I actually used an old wrist strap with nylon strap. Replaced nylon strap with some long d loop and onto my thumb release. I can tuck it in the wrist strap when not using. Works pretty well, but a little bulky. Thanks for the review!

When going from wrist release to handheld, draw length will generally have to change a bit as you're bringing your hand closer to the actually string. Could be another reason why youre having to adjust position as well.

I used the brass knocking point you cramp onto your string in place of a peep. Just one on top and one on bottom of my peep where the serving was to tie on my peep. I know guys that just tie on a thick serving as well. Then I adjusted my sight just a tiny bit as I look to the left side of my string vs with a peep I looked thru the string if you will.

When you change releases, you may very well have to change your peep height due to finding a comfortable anchor. On the first few shots you talked about moving your head and it not feeling right. Close your eyes. Draw back and anchor. Then open your eyes and see if you need to adjust your peep. I ran into this when I wanted to practice with the carter evolution and ended up buying a Carter sensation (thumb release) because it has the same profile and I can use them interchangeably with the same anchor.

Seems to be the case.

Ok I’ll subscribe. Bare with me I’m gonna give you some priceless information for free. All strings lose draw weight over time. Add it back by adding a twist to your cables and using a draw board to keep your cams in sync. I’d also like to see you straighten your bow arm out and keep your shoulder down. That will involve less muscle for stability. You MAY find your draw length will then shorten. The reason your hand is so far back is because of the long neck on that style of thumb release which I am not a fan of. For cheap and quality purpose try a hot shot vapor. Next your peep alignment will change anytime you switch releases and anchor points. Once you practice and get comfortable you can really fine tune draw length with your d loop and twists in string. Did I mention straighten bow arm and lower shoulder. Use your skeletal structure to hold the bow and less muscle you should see less pin float and a crisper release.

Allie, you will want to try several thumb releases like I have. If you watch the pros use them they pull with a flat hand then turn your knuckles into your face for anchoring. Any release will change the draw length and feel. It took me awhile to get use to it as well takes a long time to master the release which is perfect when hunting season is not in session! You will also begin to see your accuracy go up!!!! Have fun and of course please be safe.......Mike

I'd recommend you try the Raptor Peep by Hamskea if you end up switching! It comes in both 1/4" and 3/16" and you can install it at 40 degrees if you have a shorter draw or 35 degrees for a longer draw. I never put much thought into my hunting peeps, but it makes a pretty big difference when it comes to eliminating glare when shooting into the sun because of the baffles on the ID of the peep. It is heavier than a traditional peep, but it wasn't enough of a difference to affect vertical impact on my sight tape. Mileage may vary on your bow since you are shooting less than 72lbs draw weight, however!

Allie, you are doing good with the thumb release. You will find that your anchor point and peep do change a little. You would have to make a minor adjustment to that, this would make you feel more comfortable to use the thumb release. they do take a little getting used to. John Dudley does have a few videos on how to use the thumb release. If you message or comment on him he does get back to you with good advice. Just a thought and my opinion. I have switched to the thumb release a couple yrs ago and he was able to help me used this a lot better and adjust my set up. I love the release for hunting and I can leave it on my string. a big plus for me. Keep up the good work and practice

Just found you and happy I did. I am a brand new female archer and I want tips from a female. Not to say I don't learn from you guys, I do. However, when it comes to equipment and being small of stature and handed, I need a females opinion. I bought a release and even through it said for a young archer, it interferes with my trying to get the arrow on. My coach suggested a Tru Ball Fang mini so I would like to see a video by a female use it if possible. Until then I want to see if a handheld would be better for me than the strap. Also, I want one with better safety than the one I have as an arrow got away from me when I didn't touch the trigger. I'm panicked enough learning, don't need to be worrying over any misfires. Since I like to load at a more downward angle before pulling up, it just flew a few inches above the floor before landing and skidding across the range floor. I never want to experience this again if I can help it with a new release with better firing safety.

check out specialty archery peeps, i run their hooded peep. It keeps out a little bit more sun light but the cool part about this peep system is you can screw in/out different peep sizes. For me indoor archery I run a 1/16th peep, once i start shooting outdoors i jump to the next size up 3/3 and once hunting season prep gets here I screw in a different size.. All without changing out your peep. I carry the peep kit with me to all of my shoots incase the lighting is off from what im used too. Whatever the situation, 10 seconds and i have good peep to scope housig fit.

The main benefit in my opinion , I had the same release is the fact that it allows me to hold the string like a regular tool or a wrench it lets me compress my fore arm this gives me more control and allows me to pull more draw weight. Basically when I was using the traditional release I was not able to pull the bow, with this release I can shoot 60 shots and have no issues with the draw weight . I am not an expert this is my first bow please test this in Cabelas before you buy .

You should maintain the release you’re already comfortable with. You’re “trained” with it so no rethinking/relearning. The newer bow strings don’t stretch like the strings of 10-15 years ago. Check for fraying etc if you need to change it. There was a time it was a good idea to change it every other year. Not anymore. I’ve taken a couple deer, quail and grouse with a string around 5 years old.

Hi Allie, I tried the same release. I found some other pointers that made these releases more comfortable to me. Try it as a rocker style release where you manipulate the release with your pinky and you use the base of your thumb to activate trigger kind of like a rocker style. Helps with more element of surprise on shooting. Go to Bowmar Bowhunting site as he does a great job demonstrating how to work the release. Keep up the awesome work.

Try a Tru Ball Abyss Flex, and it's matching hinge Fulkrum Flex, I have both and prob won't be going back to the Carter Wise Choice/1st Choice releases I have. Edit: FYI you can order separate scope sizes from HHA, I run the XL (2" diameter") scope on my 3d bow, coupled with a 1/8" clarifier peep, it's damned near perfect. Also , put your thumb on the back side of the thumb barrel as you draw, prevents misfires. I should really watch the whole vid first lol. Thumb release changes your anchor, your peep will more than likely have to move up as your anchor is now lower

Take a 2”x2” white cardboard and attach it to your target, then as you shoot aim one arrow at each corner. It will give you 4 shots and no fear of hitting another arrow. If you can just touch each corner of the cardboard you will get better at aiming, shooting at large dots will get you in the area but the corners will get you accurate.good luck.

So what do you do to really embrace a thumb release? Shorten draw length? Adjust peep and kisser button up or down? All your talk about making sure you release while drawing back. Makes me wonder why you don’t just try a tension release... no buttons just releases on draw.

On the last 2 shots u show your bow hand which is good as far as the 45* to 60* angle. Your draw is smooth & with no wasted motion. What is new 2 u is your anchor. Using different style releases does not change your draw length, just your anchor point. YOU R drawing your bow very well past your face & bringing it back in very well @ full draw. Just correct the angle of your release 2 match or mirror your bowhand. I don't need 2 tell u that u r @ 90*. Finding the spot on your jawbone where the knuckle on your index finger is under the jaw & the middle knuckle just slightly above. Not all 4 knuckles resting in no particular place on your face. You are 90% there. Just need the brain & muscle memory 2 become 1🧠💪.

If that's a spothogg sight, they make screw on rings that change the size of the sight-housing... Turn your release hand , it's too straight up and down. Move your pinky, one to two inches away from your ear.. Put your index knuckle on your jaw line.. Just my opinion.. Give it one more try. You don't have-to film it, just try it for a couple more shots.

Woah!!! Ok, where to start. You're not using the release correctly. You don't use your thumb to press the trigger. First of all you don't need to have the back of your hand flat against your face. Your pinky side can be away from your face at a 30*-45* angle. I still use the forefinger knuckle to anchor against my jaw bone. Squeeze more with your forefinger so your pinky rotates forward more at the start. Then, your thumb wraps around the trigger until your thumb touches your forefinger. The barrel of the trigger probably needs adjusted/rolled a little to allow you to do that and not have the trigger go off. Once in that position, you can settle in your pin on your target. Then when you get your pin settled, you start squeezing you shoulder blades together (back tension), as you do this, your right elbow will start to drop just a little which causes you pinky to start rotating back, this will gently press the trigger into your thumb thus causing it to release. This is worded overly simplified and a little confusing but the best I can do in a hurry. The thumb release and hinge work similarly in that the release works off rotation not pressing of the trigger. Hope this makes sense, if not, let me know and I'll try to explain better. Love that you're trying new things, Keep it up!! I would also look at getting a thumb release or hinge without the head on it. I prefer just the hook.

1/8 " peep is probably what you need,,Your HHA size is fine,,,the bigger the housing on the scope, the more weight out front.Sounds like you need to go to a good Mathews dealer, some some tips.And,,the bow is designed to be let out just so much,,,,a good thing for you to talk to the Mathews dealer, about.Speed up the learning curve.

Have you ever thought about shooting without a peep. You pick up at least 5 or 6 F.P.S. what you do is keep your pins but put behind it a circle sight and you use that as a peep. I hunt with nothing on my string I gain about 24 plus F.P.S. I shoot a 40 pound bow doing almost 300 f.p.s. thats the jam.

I notice you rely on that kisser button too much…. Took along time setting yourself up for a shot… I’m at 65lb draw, and I want to get to anchor a release as fluid as possible without the tiring hang on. Knowing your anchor point is better than trying to base it off a button…. What happens when your out in the field and your button flies off? Seen it happen before. Happened to me in the beginning of my archery life, and I was quickly moved away from that by the archery club I shoot at. For me, my anchor is nose to string and index finger second knuckle, locked in under my ear in the indentation between ear and jaw. I’m here watching this because I’m tired of my wrist sling clapping around in the tree stand and just not being ideal when shooting with gloves

@@OutdoorsAllie same here…. One of those relying tools that every beginner archer uses thinking it’s a necessity…. It’s a good tool for someone whose never shot a bow to know how high and where the bow should be at ancho point. Once the anchor position is established with memory, the kisser should come off so they can hone the rest of their positioning and skill. I ditched the kisser ( had mine fly off) I started anchoring better and shooting better groups. I’ve been shooting a few years without one and I can say I’m very accurate to 50 yard shots. After 50 yards I don’t even bother, just because it’s hard to see an 18x18!archery block target out past 50

would like to see you follow through a little more with your release hand. needs to relax just a little more. and the release may be a little big for your hand. you might try a 3 finger release and that may feel a little more comfortable against your face. some of the thumb style releases can get pricey. if you have a local shop near you ask if you can try a couple different types. but to me this looks like the release "style" that might be best for you.
