Made a bunch of pretty complicated waves. Pretty happy with this Follin-style lead.

This is by far the best remix/cover of metal squad I’ve listened to, and I have listened to basically all of them I could find.

Metal Squad's remixes to me... Have never quite worked. Very few of them get the BEST part of the song right. (That being from 0:49 to 0:59 and moreover at 1:46 to 2:13). This... This however... Gets it right. Absolutely amazing work man!
@OvermindAlpha
@OvermindAlpha 7 лет назад
thats because most of the remixes focuses on guitar and not enough on the "16-bit feeling" the genesis has, however this remix is too much 16 bit to me, I understand thats the point, I was just curious on how it would sound. I still prefer the original way over any remix ever yet.

Holy fuck, even when I know about all the sound expansion chips the Famicom had and their features, I STILL cant help but feel surprised at what the Famicom can do. Like seriously, this is a pretty damn accurate remix of the original, AND it can actually play on a freaking Famicom, the console that was supposed to be inferior to the Sega Genesis (well, at least hardware wise). Great job! You definitely proved that Nintendo does what Genesis does. XD
@carolyne803
@carolyne803 7 лет назад
Well, I mean, I'm not sure you'd really have memory left for the game if you actually put this on a Famicom cart, lmao xD
@DixieChix
@DixieChix 7 лет назад
Meh, its still way better than using FL Studio or the dreaded GXSCC to be completely honest, plus this COULD theoretically be on a actual Famicom, even with this being a bit complicated for the system to handle (probably why I like what people can do with actual hardware so much tbh). Now I wonder how it would be like for just the NES 2A03 to handle this... has anyone done a 2A03 cover of this? Now I`m curious. lol

Oh, I absolutely agree, I use OCC-Tracker myself. I love to hear what things sound like on different chips. The Sunsoft 5b, VRC6, and VRC7 are my personal favorites.

*+Carolyn E* I think you'd have plenty of memory left, actually. DPCM samples are _by far_ the most storage-hungry parts of a Famicom song (the rest is just a set of instructions to the various channels dictating how their waveform should look), and this track miraculously doesn't appear to use any samples at all. Those drums are all white noise and triangle waves, presumably with downward pitch slides creating that 'oomph' sound.

I'd imagine to get a real NES to play metal squad, normally you'd have to give it a line of coke and then immediately empty five syringes of caffeine into the sound processor....
@FlergerBergitydersh
@FlergerBergitydersh 8 лет назад
+gamerguy425 Or just play this on an actual Famicom. Or mod an actual NES so that it can use sound expansions like the famicom does... ...Or write a version of metal squad for the 2a03 only....I'd actually be curious to see if someone could get that to work...
@TotallyGoodatGames
@TotallyGoodatGames 8 лет назад
If you get the ENIO board for the expansion port on the bottom of the NES, you can play expansion audio like this song has.
@FlergerBergitydersh
@FlergerBergitydersh 8 лет назад
Totally Good at Games Not even that. A simple resistor applied to the right two contacts on the motherboard also enables the expansion audio.

Darrow Nemecek-Gulack I'm aware of that fix, too, though I'm far from even a newbie at soldering, so a quick $25 app is great. It also has a blue connector of some kind that hooks up to the Famicom computer keyboard peripheral. It works well with the Everdrive!
@GTA2SWcity
@GTA2SWcity 6 лет назад
+Flerger "Or mod an actual NES so that it can use sound expansions like the famicom does..." The NES chip can only expand to VRC5.5 to give it stereo effects. Only the famicom can play VRC6 & be modded to do 7. I'd imagine a 2a03 attempting this would sound something like the music playing at about eight minutes and seven seconds in on this video for Mario v. AirMan: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ytkCQpsGEJA.html Side note: HOWEVER the 2a03 is nintendo's generic of Yamaha 6502 with some copyrighted functions disabled to avoid having to pay them royalties. Consoles prior with the actual 6502 did not utilize this chip to its fullest you will notice--so NES for its time did a superb job of leveraging and brute-forcing what assets they had since they did more with less. Also there is some modern generic console which can play Sega, SNES, and NES games all in one. Its soundfont is slightly different than the genuine NES (I know b/c I played a MM2 repro of MMUltra on the thing) BUT in theory you could probably mod and hack it in order to get any kind of sound (within reason) you wanted.

1:02, row 78, Namco 4, 5, or 6, ( or them all as they seem to be a chord ) there is a note that MAY be a few semitones higher than the original, but i tried listening to the FM1 channel to verify and i couldn't really pinpoint the exact pitch either, so i could essentially be wrong. Except for that one note/chord that sounds off, man that is some sweet-ass stuff right here! Really well done!

Mcall I'm still racking my brains over how you input notes. I've gotta get used to those keybinds! Also I have little to no experience with musical instruments in general so that puts a real damper on my plans. XD
@TotallyGoodatGames
@TotallyGoodatGames 8 лет назад
FamiTracker, as well as any tracker, lends itself to the piano keyboard layout. It begins with C, goes to G, goes to A to B, and then back to C. I'd start out playing the piano first, or any melodic instrument really. Just know that starting out you will not sound like Tim Follin. It takes time and practice and experience.

I don't know if you still respond to comments but what is your process of creating good 163 wave forms. I feel like some waveforms are too hard to create or sometimes I might use to many waves and the sound doesn't "get to the point" if you know what I mean. Great cover regardless

Probably my favorite rendition, even if it sounds a bit too much like Mega Man X's surfer phase at points. The original's composition is fantastic, but its lead synths are super harsh on the ears, even for the Genesis.

Is this the SNES sound chip?
@carolyne803
@carolyne803 7 лет назад
As far as I'm aware, no? I'm not sure you can really do the SNES soundchip on Famitracker? I mean, technically, considering you can import samples into them. However, you can begin to make things insanely complex when you add the VRC6 and VRC7 chips. That's how the Shovel Knight soundtrack was created, for example. Other classic examples of some insane NES shreddage include Silver Surfer, Magician, and Akumajou Densetsu (Japenese version of Castlevania 3).
@lithiumwyvern_
@lithiumwyvern_ 7 лет назад
This is the 2A03 massively helped out by the N163 expansion chip, a 4-bit-wavetable synthesizer with up to 8 channels, powerful stuff really - someone actually made a program that converts SPC700 instruments into N163 instruments and it doesn't sound horrible.
@SpiralPegasus
@SpiralPegasus 5 лет назад
No, it's not the SNES chip. This track is using samples from SNES game sounds, though, which is why it sounds familiar to you.

@ChiptunedRaijin
@ChiptunedRaijin 6 лет назад
Beaten? This isn't a contest or anything :p Anyway, I've heard it (if you're talking about ballandpaddle's cover). It's pretty good, but sounds like he just used the Megaman X2 guitar converted to a 64 or 96 sample wave and used in 4 channels I think. Personally, I'm not a fan of that, since the guitar itself doesn't sound as unique, and his other waves aren't as nice because he had to use most of the wave for that one guitar. Mine used a guitar I made myself, purposely limited to a 32 sample wave, though I still used 3 channels for it. If I did it again, I could probably use 1 or 2 channels for guitar, maybe a 64 sample guitar, but I'd try to get a nice one with 32 first, and still have a strong sound, but I'm not really planning to re-do it. Hm... It's interesting to think about. I think both of us can still improve these covers :)
