I think it was meant to symbolize the colonizer culture's disregard, disrespect and degradation of centuries old wisdom, leading to the destruction of Turtle Island. I'm most likely wrong, though 🤷🐢💗
My people like many others have endured so much, and we’re still here the US government didn’t win and never will. each baby that is born is a victory for us
The US government had no interest in destroying your people, breaking spirits, or destroying lives. Only obtaining land and territory, the rest was just extra nonsense.
I noticed the subtle change in the way Ray is dressed from the beginning of the movie to the end and often wonder if that was a visual cue from the director to highlight how Rays feelings and personality has changed. Just a thought.
@@Anime_Lover_PHX_SAC_ABQi think they mostly mean in the colors & color motifs as his clothing, not necessarily practicalness of his attire. Frank & Milton & his goons all also wear suits & dress shirts right up to the end of the movie while chasing people with guns and whatnot. Although, I think it's also fair to say Ray probably started dressing somewhat more "casually" not only for practical reasons, but also to show he was more comfortable while on the reservation. But to go back to my point about color motifs: in the beginning of the film, Ray wears his suits of course, but the main thing here is that they're almost always red, blue, and white, or have all those three colors in the outfit SOMEWHERE, which are the American flag colors (& him as an FBI agent, shows that's where his allegiance is, initially). His outfits slowly start to change until he gets to wearing tans & browns, resembling the reservation landscape colors of yellow prairie grasses, brown earth, and tan rocks, showing that his allegiance has switched to fighting with the Lakota & fighting for their land there. You could also say its reminiscent of traditional Lakota clothing made from leather. Additionally, Ray always wears Black whenever death is involved: he's wearing a Black & White suit (plus a striped red, blue, and white tie) when he first arrives at the reservation, he wears black when he finds out Maggie has died, when he finds Yellowhawk assassinated, and when he visits Maggie's grave later, Black being the color of mourning in European cultures.

This is among the most magisterial, important movies ever put to celluloid. And it’s coming out on Blu-ray! I hope the disc has as an extra, “Incident At Oglala.”
I do love me some white savior ndn movies! Dances with Wolves, Little Big Man, Thunderheart... All so good. Showed me more than any history books ever could.
Well his daddy was half Lakota, and that makes him a quarter. I'm half native half white and I could've played Raymond LaVoy. haha@@ImYourHuckleberry_29
Never did catch up with this movie. Amazon wants $13 dollars. Maybe somebody don't want you to watch it. Loved it when he said "they broke my TV". Showed Native Americans aren't a stereotype frozen in the 1800s.
Btw, Michael Apted and Roger Deakins deserve so much credit for crafting one on the great films to ever come out of the machine. Truly a great achievement in storytelling.
This is an absolute master piece! Its a personal FAVORITE! I loved living in SD and I'm Chickasaw and my soul sister in SD is Lakota Sioux. I have so much respect for the Sioux. ❤

I just came across this by accident . I like Val Kilmer Movie’s and Movies that have real Indian’s playing Indians. I am of Italian and Portuguese ancestry and grew up watching the old Hollywood films that were very good except for Westerns. John Wayne may be called a racist but you could not prove that to Me. “Too late Nathan” the old Chief said and when the Generals Son delivered a message and said the General sent Him He was corrected with “ Your Pa”. Anyway this looks good and I will be watching it. Also i like looking up the actor’s like the old guys who finally got their break . I will be looking up what they had in those Peace Pipes. I will never get a honest answer as to why such a disparity of force and assets deployed against so few in situation’s like this and My own on several occasion’s were denied to the protection of Ambassador Christopher Stevens who was set up to be Murdered in Libya. You American Indian’s are a tough people known for fighting prowess still I question the heavy fist of the Government at time’s . I try to put Myself in their place having entertained being a Black Dodger at the County Fair Myself when Young. When I see all those armed officers and the wanna be soldier Garet Trooper Swat tactics it is de ja vu for Me after anonymous reports by toxic people and other government sanctioned overreach and overzealousness. One of My daughters boyfriends was arrested at My home for stealing bicycles and what happened to those Indian’s Happened to Me except for the rifle butt in the gut. Now My neighbors will think of Me if they ever Hear Adam Sandler’s Moyda. They think I am some kind of Rambo / Mr Rodgers.
“We live with the Earth.” As early man and woman did. i am from that spirit. As a child in the country north of Manhattan, i lived with the Earth. It was my own feeling. Everything had a spirit, even the rocks and they still I feel that. I still have an arrow made of white quartz i found in the woods. Trees are life. We live in them. Earth is our mother. She gives and destroys to renew. She is herself. This is my own spiritual life i felt as a child. I love the music in the beginning. i felt the terror of the women children as they ran for the first time. They were so real. (as i die with the millions of peoples who have been murdered down through history.) The spirit of the Dine and all the people lives. . . 🐦⬛🦅🐺🦬🦌🌲
they got him addicted, the old ways were diffrent , medicine, poisons ,abuse , weapons,, theres alot of divisions cuase of this alcohol , modern day drugs, sugars ,fats
So wait! He said he was one year old in 1890??? So what year does this movie take place? Cause he would be 90 years old in 1979, but I assumed the movie took place in present day 1992?
What do you mean "you people"? Don't you know that we're all Americans? Especially the ones who were hear first. When critics accused William Faulkner of only writing about the past, his response was that they were partially right. He added that the past isn't even past. It affects everything we deal with today. Can't escape it even if you try to ignore it. Just look at current events, sir.
