I watched this film at a stage of my life where I was very troubled and anyone who would look me in the eye could notice that I was infected by fear. I watched this movie and Flint Sky (Jaguar's father) reminded me that my parents did not raise me to see me live in fear. No movie scene has ever made such a change in my life as this one did.
Brother i truly get what youre saying. I am infected w the same. This scene has stuck with me since i first saw it. Damned true to my life. But ive had enough . Referrencing this to life helps me overcome it.
@Depressed Squid Fear in and of itself is simply an emotion and you can be aware without having it. Succumbing to fear makes you paralyzed. Overcoming that fear is what he was talking about.
soakedbearrd for pure entertainment value this movie was great. For any semblance of historical accuracy it’s an abomination. Lol not unlike most Mel Gibson movies portraying historical events. The Passion wasn’t bad tho, but once I was able to accept how terribly inaccurate this movie was, I really grew to enjoy it. Although I’ll admit that 10,000 BC is one of my guilty pleasures and just as accurate as Apocolypto lol.
Unknown Unknown I’m saying this movie is combining the Aztec and Maya. So no, Mayans did not sacrifice on their pyramids, that was the Aztecs. Saying they’re the same or similar is totally inaccurate. They were 2 separate time periods. Funniest part is the smallpox and Spanish arrival lol. Spain wasn’t even a country at this time period, they were Muslim 😂. Allahu Akbar
Jaguar Paws instincts are what makes him such a great leader. He was the first one to sense other people in the forest and also the first one to go after the ravaged tribe to ask more questions. He knew whatever ravaged that tribe could possibly ravage his.
Right. I think had the father not stopped Jaguar from asking further and not downplaying his curiosity as fear/sickness, their village probably would have been better prepared or even have relocated altogether.
@@_Mayibongwe They probably wouldn't have moved, Flint Sky was the leader, the type of old leader that didn't believe in fear and his peace being tainted, he would've refused to move as that would've been a giving in to fear, for some it may seem like a coward move but he believed in standing his ground and that if it was his time to die, he would die.
@@_Mayibongwe That is certainly a valid argument. Flint Sky's dismissal of Jaguar Paw's curiosity as fear or sickness could be seen as a missed opportunity to gather important information about the threat facing their village. Without that information, they were less prepared to deal with the danger when it ultimately arrived. However, it is also worth noting that Flint Sky was likely acting out of a desire to protect his son and his tribe from potential harm, which is also a valid concern. In any case, the scene is open to interpretation and viewers may have differing opinions on Flint Sky's actions.
i agree on fear being a sickness, i have social anxiety which is a fear of interacting with people, and it has ruined my life, i cant evenn ask my teachers inn college for help because i was too scared to, thus leading me into dropping out, fear truely is a sickness
I have it, too. Why don't you get therapy? I have too much to say on this subject for a RU-vid comment, but believe me - this is something you can fix in your life!
I can imagine a lot of wars between tribes were caused and prevented by the way you conduct yourself in those delicate situations. Everyone is scared, everyone is on edge, and everyone can misinterpret.
Property entails you having authority, not the situation having authority over you and you learning from it. You are thinking like a wasi’chu. Taking the best cuts of meat for yourself…Life has done this before in every form. You haven’t. You are the one being learned. You are the property.
Just rewatched his take on fear being a deep rotting sickness. In today's current times I think everyone could find something useful for watching this clip amid the virus. Do not let fear taint your peace, be strong in times like these.
I actually did exactly that. Even posted this clip, but the FEAR twisted their thinking. They burned it into “You know the European explorers brought viruses to the New World, right?” Was their consensus. “No sense in attempting to warn you of fear, when you are already consumed by it.” Was my response.
Yet in this case a healthy amount of fear would have been appropriote as a motivator for assessing the coming threat. Fear taken to an extreme is dangeroua, but so is carelessness. If they would have pressed for more information they could have fled before the impending attack. All things in moderation.
That Virus feared me none. I was diagnosed with a usually lethal Leukemia then. My fear dropped like a number from a mobile. I cannot explain it, but like I surrendered to death. It was the greatest thing to ever happen in my life.
I wake up everyday in my ranch here in the Yucatan jungle....and this is how I imagine old mayans were...I even have Mayan ruins in my property...this movie was amazing!! Saludos from the Apocalyptic Jungle!!
They got a lot of stuff right, but the ancient mayans were likely very different. During the time that this was happening (the height of maya civilization), this area would have looked very different. Rather than a bunch of isolated hunter gatherers, they would be a bunch of farmers living in villages and towns with large cleared fields. The forest that exists nowadays came after their civilization collapsed.
I think there's another hidden message in this scene, if Jaguar Paw had let his fear take over him, he would've attacked without seeing that they were outnumbered.
Such a joke the Director of United 93 was nominated for best director not Mel. Granted Mel's drunk driving came out 6 months prior to this movie. Still what he did behind the camera should be different than behind the wheel. Still remains one of the best films of the 00's.
The establishment hates Mel because he constantly exposes them. Don't expect Hollywood to hand him any awards, doesn't matter how outstanding his film is.
United 93 sucked. How the f can that win? I bet that’s the reason he was pissed off. Or at least part of the reason. There’s absolutely NO WAY this should not have gotten at least best costume, best director , best actor, Best supporting actor, best movie score, they should of added a category best set design, best make up and hair.
Oh, please, if a black director once made a racist tirade about whites, not only would it not affect him or how his films are received and rated, you'd likely never know it happened to begin with. So, spare us the sanctimony.
The fact that I had no prior about this film before watching this scene and yet within the first 30 seconds I'm on the edge of my seat is astounding, truly incredible cinematography
Mel Gibson had the balls to make this movie with south american indigenous actors or actors of native american ancestry, on top of that in Mayan/Nahuatl language. Absolute masterpiece for the ages.
South American? Try central Mexican, Guatemalan and Peruvian. Not sure why people don’t understand that most Mayans are Mexican, which last I checked, is in North America.
@@rez_skin3479 I wouldn't be able to tell apart native american people ancestry. Anyway it might seem a little bit absurd, at least, that somebody from South America had to learn Mayan/Nahuatl lines but much better than US english, that's for sure.
@@alfiovillordo350 we have distinct features depending on regions of where your tribe is from. I feel like you would have to grow up around natives a lot (like me) to notice it or be able to tell lol
It is a pitty that time cant turn back. We would then have the opportunity of reliving our first encounter with this masterpiece. This movie totally got me off guard and gave me one of the deepest cinematic experiences I have ever felt. I dont believe there have been many films in history equally capable of captivating your mind the first time you watch them.
Advice we can take ourselves. Live your life with joy. Don't fear terrorists or disease or financial collapse. If the majority live in fear we will create fearful situations in our reality.
I convinced my then late-highschool girlfriend and her parents to go see this movie, instead of some comedy-stricken date-flick that was airing. I think I was the only one who truly appreciated the movie.
I had won a swimming race in the summer of 2007, and it was a "bell" race, which meant I was awarded a prize. A copy of "Apocalypto" was what I received. I went home, watched it, and felt the deep shiver only this movie can bring about.
A film about brown guys speaking a foreign language. Sounds like something that 99% of Hollywood executives would hate. Also, a superb, riveting movie. Hollywood's hatred of the director very conveniently masks Hollywood's fear of having more movies like this succeed.
+Robert Roberts Critics gave it a 6/10 when it came out. Yet big time directors like Scorsese and Quint said it was one of the best films they seen in years. Really sad what happened to Apacolypto. Should of gotten more honors at the Oscars.
I remember watching this film at the theater with my Dad. It was an eerie feeling in that theater as we felt this deep connection to those villagers and common folk of the forest. We are of Mexican descent and this film put us back to where our roots began.
Fantastic how he relates with eye contact. All he has to do is suggest with his eyes, and they know instantly what he means. Thats definitely how humans used to converse. In some of the kalahari tribes they still do this, and also use clicks to communicate. Its magical to see and hear them. If you get the Apocolypto dvd, the commentary is definitely worth watching. Most of the actors didnt understand a word of what was aked of them. Mel Gibson shows his genius in directing them. well worth watching
I’m Mexican & down there ppl still use their eyes as a silent way to communicate but it’s only simple things. That “get out” eye movement flint sky did is one of them!
One of the best talks about fear in any movie I have seen. Reminds me of the litany of fear from Dune. The destruction of their village and people was inevitable...ergo Apocalypto. When he tells his son to "Be still" I thought of many times I have spoken to my children when they are angry and agitated. It's not be still and don't express yourself. It's be still and calm your being so that you can think and perceive clearly...without fear. Thank you
@@LilyGazou Neither did I. Never got jabbed and I've still never had Covid. The only people I know that have had it are all jabbed and had boosters 🤷♀
@@therubberbandman3008 Common sense =/= fear, hun. And by that stupid "fate' logic, why should anyone bother doing anything preventative like wearing a seatbelt or not walking down a creepy alley at night?
His father ultimately made a mistake and cost his village a chance of getting away from the ultimate danger that was heading their way. The son was going to ask what happened, instead he was stopped.
Top Dog The whole point of this scene is that his father knew that their way of life would be shattered if they lived in fear and his son would not gain anything from speaking to them but fear. The ultimate danger was not the Mayans but the Spaniards that come at the end.
Dude, WTF are you going on about? The comment is taken from of a South Park episode trilogy-Imagination Land (Season 10). It's super funny & actually gives Mel some respect. Try to take note of the "quotation marks" next time before you go off the deep end and get a sense of humor already.
I'm reading below in the comments this crap-> 'fear is good, it keeps you alive.' His point is that you cannot live with fear, you cannot let it overwhelm your thoughts and actions, it will eventually paralyze you and destroy your tribe. His point is NOT that you can't at times be fearful, not that you shouldn't let the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, this is of course inevitable. Imagine, for just a second, that you were the patriarch of this tribe. What would be the optimal image for you to portray to your people?
Fear is a feeling (i.e. an emotion), just like love, happiness, anger, jealousy, etc. Since attitudes are contagious, the elder was looking out for his people by telling his son not to _dwell_ on it. Easier said than done, I know, but positive thinking can go a long way.
Stupid old man trying to teach his son a life lesson at the wrong time. Jaguar Paw was right trying to get more info from that vague asshole, maybe they would have been able to protect themselves.
Being from Mixtec people, my father used to explain things in life to me like Flint did about fear. I was always worried and he would explain that it infects others. Hearing this for the first time I immediately thought of my father and his talks he used to give me.
I remember watching this film thinking wtf?! How is this not the ONE movie everyone's talking about that year...Truly fascinating storytelling and assured filmmaking from Mel Gibson...
What Flint Sky was trying to say is that Jaguar Paw shouldn't let fear rule over his every thought and action. NOT that he shouldn't be afraid at all. And I have to agree with that: If you let fear run your life, it'll hold you back.
An amazing movie. Imho, Mel is a genius. Btw, my bro was an extra here, and his mother is also shown a couple of times in the movie. Im proud to say this movie was recorded in my beautiful state of Veracruz, México.
When a film can have intense or just gripping scenes, with absolutely no music, or loud ambiance, and subtitles you have to. read the entire journey. That is amazing cinema, story telling, direction, and performance. Classic
I wanna thank Mel Gibson for this great Film. His commitment to detail and desire to make it as a accurate as possible is commendable! I don't know why he decided to be part or this project but I'm glad he did. ❤
Except for the whole part about him mistaken the Mayans for aztecs and their customs. Mel combined both peoples together in this movie. Mayans didnt do everything in this move.
Years after it was made we're still praising it today. If Mel could have controlled himself maybe this film would have been greatly appreciated by many. This IS a great film! A amazing film.
This scene is awesomely directed and acted. Many wondered some of the reactions and here is some explanation. Between tribes, there is no alliance and every tribes are sworn enemy and by just meeting each other usually result in fight and deaths and hence the intense natural respond when they met. Jaguar's father speech is to prevent unneccesary killings and convince them to leave. When they found out their land is ravage, the other tribe didnt reveal the details becos he is hoping Jaguar's tribe also suffer the same since they are also enemy. Jaguar's father didnt pester on to know the details as he assumed its another another tribe and no point knowing the details and taking the warning is enough. Also further talk might result in arguement and explode into fight and deaths.
+Eduardo Arredondo This is true are history has been around longer than theres. and are remains to be told how different Mayan and Aztecs see each other some remain with there ancestoral traditions. And they have their different language passed down from generation to generation. I myself descendants from the mayans and speak Quanjobal Maya language. And continue to speak it as long as I live brother.
plus time changes things, people say if the "red" Indians came from Siberia etc across the land bridge, which they did why dont they speak some form or related form of Cyrillic script, because Cyrillic script(Russian ) wasnt even around then same with the languages of South America, time and evolution.
dfcvda Not to mention that Cyrillic isn't a language, it's a script. And it didn't come from Siberia. Why would Siberians use a hybrid of Glagolitic and Greek?
Well not exactly I been dealing with a lot of anxiety so this part of the movie was very deep and inspiring and hope that it could lift my soul to strike this anxiety from my heart....
Awesome movie. Mel Gibson went through a rough patch with his personal life and this movie went ignored. Even if this is fiction it portrays tribes instinct to survive, form alliances, and to avoid annihilation.
Flint Sky was a very wise & honorable man! He died like a "man",with honor and integrity! My father had his battles in his lifetime and sought answers . Some he discovered in time and some never revealed to him on his journey, but he fought the good fight and I loved and respected him for it. No man has ever had all the answers or were prepared for everything life threw at them, but men stand up and battle through it as best they can and in doing so they are observed by others and their struggle is noted in the hearts and minds of those not blinded by self-righteousness.
I am feeeling troubled and worried earlier. So I am here on my bed should be asleep now to prepare for another day of work but the thoughts of worry is making me feel uneasy. I have let fear creep into my soul constantly. I have lost my peace again. Watching this short clip again calms me. I was reminded that I was not raised in this world to live in fear. And neither does anyone.
Too much is being made of the historical accuracy of the movie. As far as I know Mel Gibson never claimed to be a history professor. Enjoy the movie for what it is, a caricature of Mayan civilization, and a really good story. The acting and costumes are fantastic, historically accurate or not.
Jaguar paw was lucky... getting a great thinking father is like getting a gold mine for a lifetime.... everyone should get and be blessed with a father like the one jaguar paw had.... who ever has put his money into this movie I don't know how much he got in return but... it a life time gem of a movie ever ever will be made.... the greatest actors of an era.... lots and lots of love Regards and respect for producers and directors of the movie.... atleast I feel too much lucky to watch such a beautiful masterpiece movie once in a life time chance I get to watch in my life... when I will have my kids I will make sure to make them watch this movie too... too much good learnings in the movie... love for all the actors of the movie and especially jaguar paw.... 👍
This always reminds me of the wisdom of the elders: deescalate, contain and resolve. Young buckaroos, go in gun blazing and consequences be damned. That strafing young hombre was about to draw the first arrow. Brilliant scene.
The elequetion and timing of how he's inspiring/motivating his sons growing mind is beautiful, his son is smart but doesn't know everything...fatherly yet tough
