In this video PaleoCris and myself went on the hunt for 45 Million Year Old Echinoids (Sand Dollars and Sea Urchins) from the Eocene of Florida! We took the boat out to the river to walk the river banks beautiful limestone formations and find these ancient marine invertebrates! It is a Florida summer, so naturally we experienced some nasty afternoon thunderstorms that ended up being much worse than what we expected. These storms came out of nowhere and we were forced to take cover! After the storms, we were lucky enough to see an absolutely stunning rainbow. This was an extremely eventful, fun, and scary fossil hunt for us!

I'm from NJ where the best fossils we can find in a public setting are belemnites and the occasional tiny shark tooth. I love watching your videos and seeing the sheer excitement you guys get when you find even the smallest of fossils. I'll be heading out again today to look for some new finds! Thank you guys for sharing your joys with us!

Whooboy, yeah... When I was growing up in NW Florida, I and my dad'd go fishing in a place called Willis Landing, and we got caught in a few storms like that; I always worried that a gator would overturn us before we baled enough, and all anybody would find of us would be our shoes. COOLEST RAINBOW EXPERIENCE: While living in Las Vegas, I and my friend Sienna drove over to this teeny town just outside of Death Valley called Tecopa, which had ancient clay hills full of tiny threads of white opal buried in the hardened clay (if you knew where to look, because otherwise it's a pretty desolate place. It does have some nice hot springs, though, and some sort of weird rare desert fish.) We hunted for opals for hours, found quite a few, soaked in the old free bath-house's hot springs (butt-nekked with eight little old ladies from the RV campground across from the bath-house who were having a dirty-joke-telling contest, OH MY GODS I NEVER WOULD HAVE IMAGINED THEY KNEW THOSE) and then drove back. We ran into a storm on the way home, and ended up driving under two huge, vivid rainbows, with the full moon rising straight ahead of us as the day ended. It was very surreal, and my friend later wrote me a song about it called 'Wild Opals' as a birthday gift (she's a very accomplished musician.) Incredible day, incredible place, incredible memories.

That was a really cool place to collect . There is a limestone bluff on the Alabama river that is supposed to have some really nice Echinoids and Sand dollars on it . Also in Montgomery Alabama there on Catoma Creek there is a waterfall that is there because there is millions of small Echinoids that form it .

@jefftrag1956
@jefftrag1956 5 лет назад
I think the generic name for the big one is a sea bicuit, don't know exact name. A great way to clean off matrix from them is a 6" wire wheel on a motor. Use a course one to take off large amounts then a fine one to clean down to the shell part which is much harder. The fine wire wheel will actually polish them. Next year when I am there I will take you to a place where you can pick up 5 gallon pails of perfect large ones in a few hours. On the way there are giant mounds of Indian collected sea shell with holes poked in them by Indians so they could get the meat out. Another thing about the wire wheel. When you have a glob of matrix with several of them in it you can sculpt a super cool multiple echiniods display piece with the echinoids sticking out of the matrix. You decide how much to expose. Flatten the bottom with a belt sander and you have a hundred dollar display piece. See you next year.
@jefftrag1956
@jefftrag1956 5 лет назад
Also when you have a chunk of limestone full of small shells and things play with the wire wheel and you will be pleasantly surprise what you will make.
