Keith Thurman returned to the ring against a game Josesito Lopez on January 26, 2019 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, on PBC on FOX.
In his first fight in 22-months after elbow and hand injuries, Thurman started fast, landing a clean left hook on an exchange that put Lopez on the canvas with 15 seconds left in the second round. Thurman continued to move effectively and pick out power shots to Lopez’s head.
“My hand took some contact tonight,” said Thurman. “Lopez had a tough head but we held out strong. I said you wouldn't see the best Keith Thurman tonight, but you'd still see a world class performance, and I gave you that tonight.”
Lopez tried to crowd the space, attack the body and then use his length to surprise Thurman with power shots. In round seven, Lopez connected with a straight right hand that hit Thurman cleanly and had him immediately in retreat mode.
"He had me buzzed and shaken up in the seventh round, but I tried to stay on the outside,” said Thurman. “I was a little off in my prediction of how long his arms were. He lunged in and was really willing to commit to the knockout.”
"I definitely thought I held my own in that fight,” said Lopez. “I had him hurt in the seventh round and I was landing a lot of clean shots on him.”
Lopez poured it on throughout the seventh round, but Thurman was able to do enough to survive the round. Lopez continued to come forward in the ensuing rounds, but Thurman was careful to continue his circular movement, while also landing big power shots to the head.
"I was disappointed I couldn't finish him and get him out of there,” said Lopez. “If he thinks he's the best welterweight out there, then I want two through five lined up for me."
Thurman ended the fight landing 247 punches to 117 from Lopez, and held the advantage in accuracy by landing over 27 percent of his punches to 23 percent from Lopez. Lopez’s increased activity in the closing rounds helped him narrow the deficit on the scorecard, but in the end, the majority decision went to Thurman by scores of 117-109, 115-11 and 113-113.
The victory sets up Thurman for many possible marquee matchups against top welterweights, including eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao.

Yeah it's the injuries. He knows he cant beat spence without several fights back and getting back to top top form, and fighting spence on anything less than a full years worth of fights is probably not a good idea given how much skill hes lost being out. He's just being smart.

Thurman definitely a bit rusty but he still very clearly won. Hopefully this was enough to shake it off cause there are a lot of dangerous fighters that have been wanting that belt for two years now.
@remyboss17
@remyboss17 5 лет назад
Yep, he is rusty especially since we know thurman got a good chin cause he was able to take porter and garcia's best punches to the head and never got hurt and their elite fighters so for lopez to be able to hurt thurman like he did in the 7th only proves he's definitely rusty. But hopefully he did shake off the cobwebs and next fight he'll do much better.

@Walt Dizney yup manny might be old so that's why thurman is being confident to retire pacman but like pacman have said it changes everything once you get-in in the ring and despite his old but pacman believes nobody can beat the heart of the champion ☺ even tho I'm not a boxing analyst thurman style and motion is to common for a boxer and everybody knows it the only thing he got is a strength of young boxer and luck to hope if he can knock out pacman. I just hope that thurman will fight toe to toe with pacman in order to satisfy and worth the pay of all the boxing fans.☺😆

@Just Wryt yeahh thurman was claiming the pacman is like a rabbit that hops around all in the corner of the ring but i just hope that he wouldn't run like all of his previous fight.☺ so that's why i have noticed that he has the same style like Mayweather the only way that they could win over pacman is to run and run until it reaches round 12 then could comeup with judges bad and paid decision like they did to Mayweather and horn. But pacman wouldn't allow such things and fans will surely knows who will be the true winner is.☺😊😊

After 6 rounds Lopez was landing an average of 6 punches per round. With 1:42 left in the 7th he landed a hard left hook that hurt Thurman. In the next 1:30 Lopez landed 18 punches, that's how big a difference there was once he had Thurman hurt. Most people said that Thurman didn't look good in this come back fight but I disagree. Except for the 7th round whereby Lopez should have won by a 10 to 8 margin, Thurman dominated Lopez. Thurman did whatever he wanted to in the 1st 6 rounds, the punches landed totals favored Keith by 112 to 38 thru the 6th round, an average of about 19 to 6 in favor of Thurman. With respect to punches landed, I've long since been skeptical of the accuracy of the official count. I counted the punches that Lopez landed during the 7th round assault and I came up with 30, but he was only credited with 19. Maybe someone can count them to see what they think. It was from 30:44 to 32:04 that I counted and came up with 30 landed by Lopez. One question is; do they count hard punches to the body by one guy while the other guy is trying to hold? Do they not give credit if a punch is questionably low? Watch Lopez land a hard left to the body at 30:26 that was very easy to see, but his numbers remained at 38 landed. The punch landed on Keith's belt line, so if the person counting didn't count that punch because he felt it was low, is it right that they don't count a punch that they think was a bit low? If the referee issues a warning for a low punch then I would agree that it shouldn't count but otherwise I think that it should be counted. At one point in the 7th round Lopez landed 4 hard shots to Thurman's body but Lopez' total punches landed remained at 50 ( That happened at 31:18 to 31:22 ). Two of those punches landed on Keith's left side but 2 of them landed around back( kidney punches ); none of those 4 were added to Lopez' total. Does anyone think that's right or should they have counted at least 2 of those, or maybe all 4 of them? I've never heard anyone talk about this previously. After the 7th round Lopez did better, having gained confidence after hurting Thurman and bouncing him all over the ring in the 7th round. Thurman collected himself in the last 5 rounds, not winning easily like he did in the first 6 rounds but overall still in control I thought. The judges did not give Lopez a 10 to 8 score in the 7th, but I think they should have. A knockdown gets a 10 to 8 round but I think the amount of hard shots that Lopez landed plus the fact that he hurt Thurman pretty seriously should account for more then a single knockdown punch. Anyway, the judge that saw the fight for Lopez had a very bad night IMO. Thurman won each of the first 6 rounds, I don't see any way possible to give Lopez any of the rounds 1 thru 6. If that judge scored the fight for Lopez then he had to give Lopez all of the last 6 rounds and 1 of the first 6 rounds. How in the heck could Lopez have won any of the rounds 1 thru 6 when he averaged 6 punches per round?? I know that some will say he may have landed more then 6 in one of those rounds and that you can't go by average punches per round, but the rounds were pretty even, Lopez did not have a round in which he landed a disproportionately high number of punches. If anyone gave Lopez any of the rounds 1 thru 6, I'd like to know which round so I can watch it again. It's hard to imagine anyone giving Lopez the nod in the fight. Lopez did not win 7 of 12 rounds, at least I can't find 7 rounds for Lopez.

@@futurehendrix1186 anyone in any division has the capability of knocking anyone out, it jut depends on an accurately well thrown blow at a precise time. I don't think Thurman could knock out everybody in the division, tho, considering this is one of the most exciting division nowadays - very good fighters. Lopez was walking thru Thurman's best shots except for the knockdown. I think the knockdown was more of an off-balance flash knockdown, Lopez wasn't hurt. Thurman landed some harder shots with both hands throughout the fight, Lopez reacted by coming harder. Keith also hit Porter and Garcia with his best shots but neither went down, though they each were temporarily rattled. Guerrero took everything Thurman could hit him with, and he was beaten up pretty badly, but he even rallied the last few rounds. Guerrero was fighting at 130, then moved up to 135, within 2 fights he jumped 2 more divisions to 147, had only a few fights at 147 including a loss before he fought Thurman. In other words, Thurman was clearly a bigger man since he's been at 147 his entire career. Collazo had Thurman reeling from a body shot, I know Keith won but I think the stoppage was due to an eye problem. When Keith fought European champ Leonard Bundu he vowed to knock him out. Instead, even though he won easily, he was playing hit and run the whole fight, so that's another example whereby Keith's power wasn't in evidence. Where is Thurman's power, that seems to be the question? Thurman will be better against Pacquiao, but he doesn't have faster hands so if he can't hurt Pacquiao, what will be his strategy to win? It seems like hit and move is his best game but can he avoid Pacquiao for 12 rounds? If he can't hurt Pacquiao, then I'm trying to understand how he can beat Pacquiao.
