Great review...I always think of Thursday Boots as a gateway drug lol. My first pair of boots were the Thursday Captains..wish I got Vanguard like yours though...look so sharp. Ever since that pair of boots I've been hooked... next I got Oakstreet Bootmakers Cap toe trench boot in brown chromexel. Then Whites with a wedge sole... Everyone needs a pair with vibram wedge sole for those days your feet are hurting or recovery days. Then Redwing Iron Rangers..and now I've upped my game...I ordered 2 pairs from Nick's boots (almost 2 grand) I got Latigo leather made to order and Wickets double stuffed leather made to order..and after these I'm gonna get JK forefronts...like I said I'm hooked lol....and it all started from that first pair of Captains. Sorry for the rant...I love boots.
I imagine if you were to put a good coat of polish or a sealant on them, they would work well. In my experience, the boots were a little better at resisting the water after I put some polish on them.
That's a bummer. I also felt the same thing. @Opticknight ever tried comparing these boots with the timberland waterproof boots? I've been wearing one for coming to 4 years now and no matter how heavy a rain storm and how thoroughly soaked my pant sleeve is, my socks remain dry in those Timberlands. (No snow where I live in Singapore so can't say anything about snow resistance) Just a pity they're on the tight side, hence I can't wear them daily or I'd get blisters. If the Thursdays can't compare with them, then I'd have to pass on this.
The sole is actually an imitation of a very well respected sole model from a British company called a "Dainite Sole" (company around since 1894). This model has been around for a long time from my understanding, and the only real difference I can tell from various owner and testers is that the rubber compound is a bit softer in the Thursday sole than in an actual Dainite sole. I have one pair of boots from Thursday and one pair with a branded Dainite sole and that is the way it feels to my fingernail test. I think this is a great sole because it is low profile and quite grippy. I think Thursday is keenly aware of each and every feature and used this as their primary sole because it really fits with their "top flight mixed use" approach. For an all purpose good looking boot I'd say my Thursdays are second to none. They are super comfortable made of high quality leather and parts and were ready for long wear right out of the box. Mine are black Captain model.
Nice review sir! Thursdays were my starting spot in the world of boots. Next, go for a pair of Grant Stones, Red Wing or Truman’s. Well worth the bump in price as all of them offer significantly higher quality.
The Thursday explorer is my work boot. About halfway through my first resole and they are the most reliable boot I've owned, also very lightweight for how secure they feel. I can even run in them well.
Agree. At the price they are the best high quality for a smart casual / every day beater that you don’t baby boot beyond regular casual boot care(condition twice a yr, brush after wear, & shoe tree a little cream every once in a great while). More appropriate to get away w/ in smart casual dress code office work and swing into any “off duty” situation than a pair of Iron Rangers.
I just ordered my first pair of Thursday Boots (Captain/tobacco color), and I'm not sure what to expect. Are they comfortable? Or are they rock hard with no sole cushioning, like Iron Rangers? I sold those years ago because they just weren't comfortable at all. Hoping these are a lot easier to wear and don't leave my feet with calluses.
I personally love mine. They did have a noticeable break in period, but with some thicker socks, it wasn't something I'd complain about. I think you'll probably have a great experience!
@@opticknight Thanks for the info. I admit I was hoping for no break-in and a comfortable sole, and I don't like wearing thicker socks, so I'm hoping the boots will be good enough.
I have a pair of these. They're alright at best. Ive worn them maybe 75 times in 2.5 yrs. Getting ready for a date the other night and the speed hooks popped off the boot. Contacted Thursday Boot company to try to get them repaired... Nothing... Crickets. So I hit up their facebook page and they freaking blocked me. Guys spend your $200 with a company who will stand behind their products and back them up. These influencers act like $200 for boots is inexpensive. Guy's, I had to bust my ass and save to buy these boots and this company wont even entertain a conversation about repairing a well kept, very lightly used pair of boots bought from them. I was proud to own them. Now I'm embarrassed to say they took my hard earned $$. I would've gotten better wear from a $50 boot on amazon and recieved the same bad customer service
That's unfortunate to hear you had such a bad experience. I can understand why you feel the way you do about them though. I imagine it would be difficult to get you to try a different pair as well.
Seriously? You’ve had them for 2 1/2 years and you are expecting the company to repair them for you? You’ve got to be kidding. It’s a $200 boot. You get what you pay for. Not even a $700 boot has a life time warranty. Your expectations are clearly out of line.
i really want to get a pair of these but im not sure what size to get them... im a size 12 in vans if i get the boots a 11 1/2 ? would that be a good idea
On their website, they have a little program that will help you find your size. I usually wear 9.5 R in men's boots, and about a 10 R in men's shoes, and a 9.5R is perfect for me.
I condition my boots with Bick4 a few times a year. Keeps them hydrated and does not discolor the leather. Also, a good cobbler can upgrade the sole when you decide to do it. Lots of sole options come resole time.
It looks like your heel stack sort of squashed out like mine did. I wish they would put a slight angle on the top of that stack. I've seen a few guys with broken shanks because of it. Great review! Great boot!
You did not discuss size much. Whether you're ordered your exact size, half size down, up. I am looking at them also and was wondering about any size issues.
That's a great point! My usual size in shoes is a 9.5R to 10R, so I went with my gut and got a half size down like they recommended on their site. Thank you for bringing that up!
@@theodorehartman5086 I got a 9.5R. I just got two more pairs of Thursday boots I'm reviewing and I also got them in 9.5R and so far they feel just like my captains.
Thank you! I know there's better ways to do it, but the best I can do is I use an old rag with some water on it to remove the bulk of the dirt and grime. I have an old tooth brush I also use to get the fine stuff. From there, I use Kiwi brown polish with a softer rag to apply the coat of polish. I buff with a horsehair brush to the desired shine I want after I'm done. What is your preferred method?
Update on my thrusday boots after 2 years . I did replace the hell caps. Now I put in new boot laces . I uses Venetian shoe cream every 6 months . The boots look and fit great .
Thank You, as stated by others, You've helped me make my decision to purchase a pair. Only difference is I live in Michigan and will need the lug sole. Great Review, you touched on all the important areas I was wondering about.
