THX (Robert Duvall) visits a Unichapel and makes a confession to a computerized religious entity known as OMM 0910.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on his award-winning student short, George Lucas's debut feature cerebrally celebrates the possibility for individual freedom against all odds. In a 1984-esque white-washed future underground dystopia where sexuality is banned, all humans sport shaved heads and the same shapeless outfits as they go about their work in a mandated state of sedation, listening to exhortations to "Buy and Be Happy." Black-clad robot cops chant a mantra to their victims that "everything will be all right" and automated confessional booths emit soothing therapeutic bromides. But unbeknownst to THX 1138 (Robert Duvall), his roommate LUH 3417 (Maggie McOmie) has been reducing their meds, resulting in their mutual discovery of love and THX's subsequent imprisonment for drug evasion and sexual misconduct. Determined to find the pregnant LUH, THX breaks out of prison with the help of his cellmate SEN 5241 (Donald Pleasence) and an escaped TV hologram (Don Pedro Colley). With fugitive pursuits strictly budgeted, THX only has to evade the robocops until the funds run out, but surveillance is omnipresent and THX's vehicle keeps overheating. Making the only film produced through the first incarnation of Francis Ford Coppola's independent studio American Zoetrope, Lucas and his small crew, including co-writer and sound editor Walter Murch, shot THX 1138 in northern California with no interference from distributor Warner Bros. When Warners saw the austere result, however, they recut the film before its release. Neither the studio's nor Lucas's cut was a popular success, but THX 1138's coolly minimalist style and story-telling gained fans on the college screening circuit, just as Stanley Kubrick's poetic 2001: A Space Odyssey had attracted a large youth audience in 1968. When Lucas returned to sci-fi after American Graffiti, he traded restraint for nostalgic fun in the film that guaranteed his creative freedom in Hollywood: Star Wars.

Yes, the atmosphere in this film is amazing. I grew out of Star Wars in 1983, though, after Episode VI, at age 20.

This is WAY to deep for most people, even today like 30 years on lol. George Lucas always wanted to make more experimental films, but the corporate controlling Hollywood machine suppresses that because they seek to keep the mainstream in a "dumbed down" state of thought, so they can keep making money off of just "entertaining" us. Star Wars is simplistic, but i still love it, because it has layers and quite a few themes. This Film is more of a analysis, it's very thought provoking and does show George Lucas's very expressive and amazingly imaginative mind. The world of THX-1138 could well be our reality in the future if you look at how things are going right now.

The first time I saw this when I was a kid, I remember thinking how absurd it was that anyone could be so stupid as to bare their souls to a computer, knowing what the state would do if they become too troublesome. Then facebook came along and every day tens of millions of people confess their everything to the computer. Go figure! Blessings of the state upon you.

I think that Lucas was exquisitely showing us that this movie does not depict a "future" world but that, in reality, though most people can't or won't face it, this has already happened and we are living it now in so many ways. Don't be fooled by the externals and specific situations depicted here...the futuristic sets, robotic cops, medicated population, etc. which might lead us to believe this is "in the future" or "science fiction." Psychologically, sociologically, culturally, technologically, economically, and in human interrelationships, this movie holds a mirror up to the world as it is right now

Maybe not, But possibly, he was given info or insight as the things to come. But why would not not come up with the ideas himself. After all most students did read books back then, like 1984, Brave New World, things which foretold the Then, coming future in which we pretty much live in now. Those author's probably were not trying to Warn Us, but Tell Us what their plans were going to be , but do it through stories clothed as fiction or science fiction, so it would not get us in an uproar, plus they were written almost 100 years ago. The average reader know it was a bit of a slow burn like the frog in a pot of water.

The beauty of THX-1138 is that it became true. The only core difference between current reality and THX-1138 is that the state, big tech and the masses have hidden mediative/third party control over us and our communication with those whom we care for, while in the movie, Duvall had direct communication with said big tech/state/mass civilian expectation. We’re literally living this every day, and most of us don’t even know it.

you did not undersdtand that it was already true in the seventies and even before. we live in a kind of prison a bit like thx1138 because we have to follow a system that controls us. it just becomes even more true with electronics and computers being almost everywhere today. i would add that it was like this since man is on earth. even in the old times they had to follow the rules of the stronger and follow the king or follow the religion and then the government laws and such. this is nothing new.

something as big as Star Wars is bound to define its creator indefinitely. might as well go with it. imagine if he'd tried to do something else afterwards. a sequel to American Graffiti. a realistic sci-fi dystopia in the same vein of THX 1138. that would've been cool. however, his plans with Star Wars were much greater, and he trusted Disney to realise his vision. what he didn't realise, however, is that Disney wasn't contractually obligated to follow his guidelines for the sequel trilogy, and thus the uneven mess we got. according to him, the story ended with Return. the rest is basically expensive fanfiction made for profit. but at least he can live comfortably from the proceedings for at least three more lifetimes and more. and most of us can only dream of having created something as influential and larger-than-life as Star Wars.

The lizard is natural like the prayer. THX 1138’s natural prayer is met with an unnatural hollow graphic of god. Who patronizes his prayer and his rising fear of his knowing his world is unnatural. He is also experiencing withdrawals from his roommate messing with his doses. Let us be happy we have a job to do. Blessing of the state blessings of the masses. Increase production. Subtle reference to the reptilian brain that unites living creatures, but not technology. The suggestion nature continues regardless of how humanity tries to control it. A direct parallel between a living thing, the lizard, flicking his tongue to understand the tech in front of him and THX tossing human emotion at an unfeeling machine. An implication that at any point, no matter how sophisticated the technology, a simple animal can get in and cause unexpected consequences.

This part always stuck out in my head as a kid. Recently the company I drive OTR for had promoted one of the dispatcher's to a title called driver relations, this guy is no way fit to hear drivers grievances, he has no sense of humor, very droll and dry and on an EKG he's flatlining so when he called to tell me he was the person I need to reach out to if I have any questions or issues he would be the one to talk too. Immediately I thought of this very clip and had to watch it. 😂 I can only imagine how this will go.🤔 My settlement was short, they didn't pay me for 2 stops. Yes.. I understand. I remember seeing this frightening dystopian film back in 71 . It was brilliant as much as it was frightening . Today in 2023 we have just been informed about AI ... What it is , how it works and how we will not be able to stop it. Mankind has now created his own overlord . This film may well be our actual future in 30 years . Luckily , I am now 68 and wont be around to see much of it ... Unless reincarnation does exist .. then we are all screwed in the end anyway

Most of the changes are good though. I don't see the problem in artists revisiting their works, as if the "original shot was the most genuine one". Sometimes they're limited by many factors. Bach revisited many of his cantatas and brought stunning elements to it.

the lizard part was probably to show that even in computers and electronics , some things there you cant control. life can always find a way and things can go wrong and have issues even when things are programmed. the part where we see a malfunctionning robot is another example. some say that eventually we will be in a world with a.i. robots and this movie was probably a prediction about it and not so crazy after all. we can see with internet and cell phones and everything that we are slowly going this way. the movie also show well how thx1138 and citizens in the movie are in a kind of prison because they have to follow the system rules and this is a reality even more today. there was another movie that was one of my favorite and the name is Logans Run. Logan also lives in a computer controlled society. this was amazing to think about this back then but it is slowly becoming reality with internet and electronics being almost everywhere.
