This is the last video in a series of 4 teaching videos about the thyroid gland. In this video, we’ll talk about a thyroid scan & radioactive iodine. More specifically, I'll tell you what a thyroid scan is, which tracers (Technetium/Iodine-131) to use, how to prepare for a thyroid scan and if it is a safe procedure. This is an ideal video for nursing/med students who want to know more about a commonly used nuclear medicine technique.

Hello Dr. I am reaching out hoping for some answers. When I was 20 I had RAI pill. I had lost 60pounds carrying my fourth child. Since then, I have been on Synthroid. I was doing okay UNTIL menopause came. My symptoms are all over the place. I have symptoms of both Graves and Hashimoto's. I am on 88MCG's 6 days a week. My TSH is 0.44, T3 Free is 2.8, Free T4 1.2. Are there any other test I can or should have done besides these 3. I had my ANA tested it was Positive with my Titers at 1:1280 very high. I would appreciate any help. I am struggling. I recently had an US and it showed a very small shrunken thyroid gland. Thank you.

Great video! Thank you. I had what they tell me Graves disease when I was 21. I was given a pill RAI and my uptake took 3 seconds which confirmed the hyperthyroidism. I then became what they tell me (they meaning the many endocrinologist) It's frustrating as I was told I had Graves, Hashimoto's now Graves again. What are the best test to have to determine what one actually has. I have symptoms of both of these DIS eases. Thank you.

Hello, v informative video,loved it! I would like to ask you a few things, 1) Is any preparation needed before the procedure -Scintigraphy? 2) why is salivary gland's uptake important,as a part of thyroid scan?is it only for the indication pain in the gland (side effect) or something more? 3) Is radioiodine uptake a part of only Scintigraphy and Ca thyroid treatments?
@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
No preparation is needed. There's uptake in the salivary glands because they also take up tracers. It's just something you should know, it does not have any significance. And I don't understand question 3, I'm sorry 😉

Hi Dr. Paulien, thank you so much for such a valuable video. I request you to please take a moment to see my case. My blood tests diagnosed me with Hyperthyroidism, however the normal ultrasound scan showed it’s normal. Now, I’m recommended to go for a Thyroid uptake and scan. It’s mentioned in the requisition that it’s a 2 day exam. On the first day, I’ll be given a radioactive pill and on the second day, my neck will be monitored and then afterwards I’ll be given an injection in the arm. 1. I’m lil scared if it’s safe? Any side effects? Most importantly, any risks? 2. What’s your opinion about my case: I mean which Thyroid disease it looks like from your experience? Hoping that you’ll reflect your insights. Best Regards,
@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
I would definitely go for the thyroid uptake scan. It's safe, the amount of radioactivity they will inject is very low. You won't feel anything at all. I would only recommend to not come close to newborn babies or pregnant women. In my opinion, not having your thyroid uptake scan and therefore maybe not getting the right diagnosis is a lot 'riskier' than having the scan. I can't say what thyroid disease you have, I don't know where you're from, what your age or medical background is, I'm sorry.

In Graves’ disease there is hyperactive gland, so they are on thiourea drugs because TSH is low, so what is done to get the TSH levels high?
@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
Nothing, we want T4 levels to be high. The fact that TSH levels remain low is not important and has no clinical impact.

@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
@@manalnadeem3350 at 3:40, I'm talking about radioactive iodine treatment. Treatment to treat a hyperactive thyroid. We want the TSH as high as possible, because that means that the thyroid will take up a lot of the radioactive iodine (you could say that the thyroid is "hungry"). People stop taking their T4 pills a few days before this treatment, this will cause the TSH to rise.

What is the difference between cold nodule and hot nodule
@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
Hi! A hot nodule is a nodule that produces excess thyroid hormone and will show up on a thyroid scan (because they take up more of the isotope than normal tissue does). Hot nodules are almost always noncancerous. A cold nodule, on the other hand, is a nodule that takes up less of the isotope and is often cancerous.

@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
Hi Shivani, thank you for your comment 😊. Thyroid scans use ionizing radiation and we know that radiation exposure increases the risk of cancer. However, for thyroid scans, the effective radiation dose is only 3.2 mSv (for comparison: a CT scan of the abdomen exposes a person to about 10 mSV). 3.2 mSv is super low, so yes, it increases your risk of cancer, but it is negligible. The benefits of having the scan far outweigh any potential risk from the small radiation dose 😉
@dr.paulinemoyaert
@dr.paulinemoyaert Год назад
The same is true for other scans, if you want to put things in perspective, I'd recommend watching this video (3:08-3:45): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TresR2wSw40.html
