India's dam policy also disturbing its own land, especially - Bihar ; its CM Nitish Kumar is openly speaking to shut down Farakka dam on the Ganga river. Bihar & other states of India on upper stream of Ganga are facing mega floods annually. Farakka dam, Tipaimukh Dam (in Borak valley, Assam) has environmental consequences to both Bangladesh & India. The Tipaimukh dam is situated in an extremely quake - prone area so if once a mega quake shocks the foundation then both countries are doomed!

@User Name Uh no. It's not a grim reality. Over 68 percent of the fresh water on Earth is found in icecaps and glaciers, and just over 30 percent is found in ground water. Only about 0.3 percent of our fresh water is found in the surface water of lakes, rivers, and swamps. Befor if ever we run out of fresh water from lakes, rivers, and swamps, we still have groundwater. And before that runs out, we would have a cheap way of mining the polar icecaps and icebergs.

Due to climate change the earth will start desertification, zones like the Tropic of Cancer will widen and encompass far more land than it currently does along with rising sea levels most of humanity will have to relocate further north if you're in the north hemisphere and south in the southern hemisphere. All of this will happen well before the Milankovitch cycles situate the earth well enough for the re-greening of North Africa, water is getting more and more valuable by the decade and china understands this. After all their Belt and Road initiative plans for it, why else would they want to get a foothold in Africa. Also, Russia will be in a great position once the Beaufort Sea, The Northwestern Passages, and the Baffin Bay become trilion dollar shipping lanes, hence why china wants to keep a close eye on them for after all "keep your enemies closer" is a thing people like to say. There is a lot I've not said like the desertification of the southern states of the U.S, the many states/countries that will change to a temperate climate (greenland) and many other things. One thing that did not get discussed is just how much of the water in the rivers originates in Tibet. Obviously not all of Indus or Mekong originate in the Plateau. The downstream countries (save for Pakistan) get a lot of annual rainfall and have their own major tributaries to these international rivers. So I wonder just how much does China have sway in this matter? It's not like they can halt the rivers for long. Case in point: by the time the Mekong enters Thailand it only accounts for 19% of all of Mekongs water discharge.

Yeah it’s one of the things that is always misused when discussing resources. Current stocks or even current known stocks are not the same as what is left in the world. It is what is left that can be taken at the moment without costing more than it’s worth to extract. For example the oil sands in Canada arent economic to extract oil from but if oil tripled in price they would be, and the amount of oil being extracted would massively increase. Same here with water if it costs $1/gallon to desalinate water, but water only worth $0.10/gallon noones going to do it, but put a drought in and suddenly it’s worth a lot more and making a desalination plant makes sense.

Not sure that would really work in actual practice. First, affected nations may not respond with meek submission. They may defy. Second, much of the water in these rivers come from local monsoon rains, not from melting glaciers. So, big question for each river is, "how much of the water comes locally, and how much from China?" Third, the world may not approve, and China could be hit with sanctions, and boycotting of Chinese products. I don't think China can play the water card without suffering severe consequences.

You're partially right there. Lets take Brahmaputra and Ganga for example, though Brahmaputra originates from the Chemayungdung Glacier, it passes through wet-evergreen forests of north-east India that are amongst the wettest places on Earth. On the other hand, Ganges also originates from the Gangotri glacier, and so do its tributaries, from their own glaciers well within the Political boundaries on India, in the Northern state of Uttarakhand (so, a dam if at all will be our own doing). If glaciers of the Ganges were hypothetically controlled by China with an agenda to dam the river, it would leave the river dry, as it passes through some of the most fertile agricultural lands with low to moderate rainfall.

India isn't dependant on Tibetan water though. A river is big not at its source, but through feeder streams. Most of India's rivers and feeders lie entirely within the country. It is the small surrounding countries which will suffer from China damming things up. Because India will do that in turn and the cascading effect will hurt those small countries.

A few years ago, I visited Laos' capital, Vientiane. I hadn't heard about the river issues back then, but walking along the bank of the Mekong I thought something was really strange. The banks of the river were really really high, and the actual river was quite far off. I was there during the dry season at first I thought that's why, maybe during the wet season the river comes up to the bank. But then I saw some newish looking huts, you know, places where farmers or fishermen relax. And these were on the wrong side of the river banks. There were even dirt roads carved into the river bed. I thought this was really strange, because these huts would surely be washed away when the river reached the river banks, and how did they manage to carve dirt roads? They'd also be washed away. I thought it was strange, but I was just a tourist. I thought my European mind just doesn't understand the foreign culture or geography. A couple years later I first heard of the Mekong river being dammed up in China. Suddenly Vietiane made more sense.
