That was very nice...quite informative! "Butter Tea" is an item in the Playrix game "Township". Since all of the game's "recipes" are very loosely based on actual dishes and beverages, I figured butter tea had to be a thing somewhere in the world; and, so it is!

This drink inspired Dave Asprey's Bulletproof Coffee, which consists of coffee, mct oil (or coconut oil) and butter. Dave recommends using grass fed unsalted butter. Kerrygold makes some that is pretty widely distributed. Not only is the grass fed unsalted butter much healthier for you, but it greatly improves the flavor. I would strongly recommend the substitution.

Shocked that there are no comments about this, but the video misstates how much water you need to boil: the recipe says 4 cups while the video says 2 cups. My friends noticed this discrepancy early on, and decided to go with the video. What we ended up with was comparable to creamy seawater. I know we probably should have followed the written recipe, but it's still a pretty big blunder.
@alder128
@alder128 10 лет назад
Well, did you add 2 teaspoons of salt or 2 tablespoons? Seriously, Thirsty For..., how is it that your videos are so well produced but you can't get the ingredients and/or instructions (usually the ingredients) consistent between the videos and the recipes? How are we supposed to make the drinks we see taste like they're supposed to taste if we can't figure out the proper amount of things? Other than that not-so-minor quibble, great job!
@davidjackson8032
@davidjackson8032 10 лет назад
alder128 Yeah, "2 TBP" salt and "2 TBSP" butter in the video is really confusing, and would take the creator like 18 seconds to check before uploading.

Hey guys, thanks for this awesome season! I am really looking forward to the next one! This episode reminds me of my grandmothers story when she and my grandfathers were making a journey in Mongolia - they were drinking this same tea, with yak butter. She remembers it as tasty and really useful, also because of the cold and the fat which serves like a lipbalm. Thank you for making me remember this story! Have nice holidays and see you next time!

If you ever go to Tibet, those butter sculptures are pretty cool. They stink for sure, but there's a lot of workmanship put into them. Plus, the rooms where they're kept are often the only air-conditioned rooms you can find for miles.

I am SO happy they did this butter tea and not butterbeer. I feel like there are enough "recipes" for butterbeer (if it can even be called that... it's just cream soda with a hint of butterscotch flavoring to it, you don't really need instruction for that). The latter drink is just too overrated, overdone, and not all that interesting. Mind you, I'm a Harry Potter fan myself and I'm saying this. I want to learn about something new and interesting from a culture that doesn't get enough notoriety. To me, this drink being chosen for the season finale represents what Thirsty For is mostly about! Anyway, looking forward to the next season! I hope Eric and his crew enjoy their break -- they've earned it. :)

Tried this and it was delicious! The only thing I would change is to reduce the salt to 1/2 or less of the suggested amount, especially if using salted butter. The pu-erh really adds depth to the drink, and I recommend using Kerrygold butter - super rich and creamy! Next time I'm going to try making the Chaku.

Yak Butter Tea seems to vary from region to region. The YBT I had in Tibet was much more palatable than that which I had in Nepal, which was too greasy and too salty. The tea is very suitable to the climate and living conditions of the Tibetan Plateau. Thanks for sharing. Excellent videography, by the way.

I make something similar in the morning before running off for the day. I started a ketone diet (aka low carb) to help with seizures and metabolism issues and needed to add more fat to my daily diet. Something other than meat and cheese as that gets old very fast. I melted 2 T coconut oil in my hot tea and decided it looked undrinkable. I decided to put it in the blender. While it was in the blender I thought to add one scoop of low carb protein powder then blend on high and my favorite morning drink was born. I use different types of caffeinated tea and choose a flavored protein powder based on the tea I chose that morning--either chai or vanilla. Now I add 2 scoops of protein powder and 3 T of coconut oil and blend for a full minute, but it's good and filling and gives me a decent amount of calories for the day. I haven't tried it with puerh, but have been considering it because I love puerh with cream. I might also have to try butter and salt some day too. :)

In Tibet they use a fermented tea block very similar to pu-erh tea (which is Chinese), but it's not found anywhere else. On a tour in western Sichuan (which is full of Tibetan people and culture) they tried to get us to buy it, which I wanted to, but it was about $100 a block and it was sold by 20 blocks. It's also really good without butter, milk, and salt, sort of jujube flavor. Also you can drink it before sleeping because I heard boiling a long time removes a lot of caffeine. (not sure if it's true)

+TeddysCooking The only downside of Tibetan tea is that it's extremely high in fluoride (the same stuff added to toothpaste), which is not harmful in reasonable quantities, but in the amount that it's consumed in Tibet leads to chronic health problems due to flouridosis.
