In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about Tibetan Spaniel that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Weight: 9 to 15 pounds
Height: Up to 10 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 15 years
The Tibetan Spaniel is a small dog with a long history. Bred in Tibetan Buddhist lamaseries to be companions and alarm dogs, they were popular gifts to foreign dignitaries. Today the little canine ambassadors are still prized as companions, thanks to their sweet, smart, and attentive nature.
Said to resemble a little lion, a powerful Buddhist symbol, he retains the watchfulness bred into him centuries ago and can be aloof toward strangers, but he's a fond and friendly family companion. Tibbies, as they're nicknamed, are active enough to enjoy dog sports such as agility, but not so demanding of exercise that they'll run you ragged. Their portable size makes them suited to any home, from apartment to estate, as long as they have plenty of human attention.
When they're not cuddling with their people, Tibbies enjoy a high perch that allows them to see everything that's going on. They'll climb on whatever piece of furniture gives them the best view, giving them the reputation of being catlike.
Like many small dogs, they prefer being approached at their own level rather than having someone looming over them. They're highly intelligent and take well to training when it's accompanied by positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play, and food rewards. Tibetan Spaniels are sensitive to the moods and needs of their families and they're happy to try and meet them. This loving breed is uncommon, but he's the ideal match for the right homes.

Just lost my little Tibby … his name was Peanut and he lived to be an unbelievable 19 yrs old. I am grieving so much because he was so bonded to me and the most wonderful, loving little dog imaginable. He was so beautiful and his coat was so soft. I am missing him so much .. think he hung on all those years just because he knew I needed him so much!!

I have two of these marvellous dogs. Very loyal and mischievous, they both like to look out the window and bark at people walking by (Especially if they have dogs). They shed a fair bit (I try not to wear black) but with regular brushing it's not too bad. They adore my grandparents, but they do bark at other dogs when we're out for a walk. I used to live in Finland and every other dog there is a Tibbie lol

My tibbie is extremely smart and it kinda scares me that she seem to understand her family like she learned the English language. I rescued her from a abusive home. I watched her as she was suffering and getting beat in a cage. The min my eyes seen that I told the owner she don't have a dog anymore I'm taking her. I let him know if he have a issue with me taking his dog to fight me. I knew that person couldn't fight so he set there while I took his beat up dog straight to the vet and became her owner. This was in 2017, I still have my dog and she is very loved, loyal and healthy. Thanks for the video, I needed it.

I would have added Cherry Eye as a known health issue with them. We just got a new Tibbie puppy we named Alfie and he is still in his crazy puppy phase but he's also very sweet and loving when he's not being crazy. We were warned by the breeder that Cherry Eye is a known issue that started very shortly after we brought him home. I learned how to tuck it back in and am now a master at it. He will be getting surgery to correct it when he's neutered. Other than that though, he's an amazing dog who loves to follow me around and snuggle!! 🖤

My tibetan spaniel is a little old lady. The last year I have learned her lots of stuff since fall. She can give paw, sit, wait for food, role around, dig, high five, kiss, bite, stand up and up on her back paws. I am working with her barking on strangers and dogs (I got her at 10 years age and she knew nothing). She isnt motivated by food or toys, so she is a though stubborn cookie (she is also going a bit blind). I am glad she has perked up and become happy after coming to me this fall. She was a bit scared and shy, but she is becoming a happy little lady. She almost died around newyear. She had so many medical issues when I got her so its been expensive, almost used all my savings now. 😅 She wont suffer with me. No one is allowed to yell or hurt her under my care. :p She is gonna get the best next 10 years of her life (I hope she lives til she is 20 after all those medical bills we dealt with). And yes she is barking like crazy sometimes if someone is seen at the windoe. I have actually been working on reducing it to a single bark preferably if they are just passing by, or like that silent boof sound. I dont mind her barking if fokes actually comes up to our door, but I am defently trying to teach her some self restrain (not that it works all the time). She is doing progress and understand what I want though,so she will at least stop if I tell her to (sometimes). Other times she get super defiant and keep barking even if I try to correct her by refusing to let her see out the window (doing positive reinforcwment training, and if she barks to much, I remove her from the stimulus (aka, dont let her look out the window if she keep barking. :p

You have given hope with your post. My roommate believes that the 9 year old Tibetan Spaniel I recently adopted is too old to learn new things like those you listed above. But you got your Tibby when she was 10 and knew nothing. My Tibby "Rusty" was horribly abused in the puppy mill he was rescued from. Our local Cauz for A Paws rescue organization kept Rusty with them for the first 6 years of his recovery. He was burned with cigarettes and so neglected that most of his teeth had to be surgically removed. Nevertheless, Rusty is loving and happy now. He does still have PTSD. The biggest problem is that he is not house-trained or pad trained and seems to have little awareness or control of his bowels and bladder. Even when I walk his outside very, very frequently he still has accidents and pees on the carpet. Any suggestions you might have are most welcome. Thank you.

We taught our Tibetan Spaniel to "whisper" instead of bark. And she had LOTS of socialization with people, children, dogs, cats, chickens. So she learnt to be selective at what she barked. If there was a true concern,: a stray dog, or bear or deer come into the property, she'd throw back her head and give a long, loud baying bark like a hound. Then properties 5 big dogs dropped whatever they were doing and come running. Then she'd stand back and watch the fun. We didn't train her. We taught her. Then, I couldn't "command" her to do anything. If I asked her, she'd do it. If I commanded her, Nose up. Tail up. And off she'd go. Then she'd come back 15 minutes later and stare at me as if to say: "Okay now? Have you gotten over this Me human, You dog, business?" But off leash, if I said "Mer, lets go here. Or go there. She'd just look to see what wanted, and comply. But no commands.

I have a tibby and she lives with 3 other dogs in my home. She the best dog ever but, the Aussie steps on her sometimes and she’s taken to barking at him. She was easily trained for therapy work and she has great eye contact and never has accidents.. I trained her to use her nose instead of paw when she wants more petting because her nails scratch. She almost never Matt’s and her coat is beautiful . She is marked like a Papion and the vet called her “baby St Bernard’ when she was a baby and had no hair. And boy does she have hair now. And people go crazy of her in public because she will look straight at them and when she walks she flicks her tail and hips side to side like a Disney character. I am now retired so she gets a lot of attention from all of us and loves our Maltese, Rufus. Her name is Little bear

I had my tibbie last summer. Since then, she broke so many dog stereotypes I had in a good way. The treats I give her when I go out, she won't eat before I come home. Although she's weary of human strangers, she adores her fellow canine friends. or every other dogs really. She is so friendly she absolutely HAS to go to say hello to every single dog she encounters from her walk, even if they are big scary ones(she had some bad experiences with very excited big dogs) So now I know pretty much every dog owners of my town thanks to her! She doesn't bark and expresses her feelings by just.....silently staring me like I'd know what she wants but of course I'd do, right?! Then she will come to me and happily lick my hands arms foot everywhere she can while comfortably laying on my laps, like she's grooming me. Sometimes I wonder if she's not secretly a cat-mix😂 I really love her for all her quirks and do recommend tibbies to everyone who are looking for small companion dog.

My sons have a love hate relationship with our Tibbie. They love her but don't like it when she barks when they try to ease into the house late or when they are raiding the refrigerator late night😁. Our Tibbie tend to have a hierarchy of who she is attached to more. It's me who cares for her most of the time, my husband, then our sons (according to who is home). If we are all home she tends to stick with me.

Tibetan Spaniels were watch dogs for centuries. It is instinctive. They believe it is their job. You must train them to "watch" the way you want them to. Don't expect them to know what you want. Train them with kind attention. "Alert barking" then check with you right away, then you reward them a "good boy" and expect them to be quiet.
@craigfinnegan8534
@craigfinnegan8534 Год назад
Thanks for that advice. It resolves some of my confusion about breed descriptions saying they're quiet dogs but so many owners in these comments saying the opposite. From what you said it sounds like the owner's own personality and discipline makes the difference - it can condition upwards their barking instinct or condition it down.

I looked into Tibetan Spaniels because I met one who used to hang out on the library steps at Duke University. That was the most self-possessed dog I've ever encountered. It's like that dog knew WHO he was, whereas most dogs just know WHAT they are. I've had Cocker Spaniels riding on my motorcycle with me for 8 yrs now. When I inquired about riding with a Tibbie, here's what a breeder wrote me... "This particular breed of dog is not one that I could comfortably say would do well on a motorcycle. They do not like to be restrained in any type of way for very long periods of time. When we travel with them, we normally have a large cage set up so they can get up and move around, otherwise they are constantly howling and barking. That is not to say that there aren't the rare special cases out there where they don't mind. I know this litter though and do not see that being the case."

I’m interested in small dogs like Boston Terriers and Cavaliers. I would love a Cavalier if I had a girlfriend living with me in a house/apartment and get married with kids, but the health issues are a shame and make it hard to buy one. I heard about the Tibetan Spaniel and did some research but looking more into it, they seem really cool for a small breed along with its cuteness. I think they could be much popular here in the US and like they could also be watch dogs. Cool look and don’t seem super high maintaince.

I've never owned either breed (Cav or Tibbie), but my sense is that Tibbies are healthier. Cocker Spaniels have a list of potential health issues, but none of my Cockers have ever had any of them. Eventually all breeds have some kind of health issue if they live long enough. The most important thing is to know the more likely potential issues for the breed you choose and know the symptoms to look for so you can catch it as early as possible for successful treatment at lower cost.
