In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Tibetan Terriers that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Companion Dogs
Weight: 20 to 24 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 2 inches to 1 foot, 4 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years
Born in Tibet, Tibetan Terriers were bred in lamaseries to be companions not only to the holy men who raised them but also to nomadic herdsmen as they wandered the high plains with their flocks. The shaggy, medium-size dogs were thought to bring good luck, so they were never sold but only given as gifts or thanks for favors. People who live with the breed today understand just what a gift they are.
Like all dogs, Tibetan Terriers thrive on human companionship. It's no wonder they excel as therapy dogs. While they're not demons for activity, they are active enough to compete in agility and do well in obedience and rally. Hearkening back to their history as lamasery alarm dogs, they are alert to anything different and make super watchdogs. Their gentle demeanor doesn't suit them to work as guard dogs, however.
It's not unusual for Tibetan Terriers to be reserved with strangers, but they shower affection on their people. They can adapt to life in many different types of households and are a good choice for families with older children who understand how to treat dogs. With their protective double coat and large, flat, round feet to provide traction - in much the same way as snowshoes - they're well suited to homes in snowy climates.

A woman from Nepal told me that they consider TTs souls that didn't QUITE make it to human this time, and the monk's job is to teach the dog to be human next time, and the dog's job is to teach the monk that he is still an animal.

TT's are terrific watch dogs, their ears pick up the softest sound. They do not bark often, unless they sense a threat. However, they will somtimes bark when they are hungry and with fierce (and convincing) demand, walk around with their plate. They'll show you! Or, you'll get "the ol' what for!" They have quirky, funny, really silly personalities with a lot of playful spark. They are fiercely protective and they do sometimes have a sharp attitude. They are extremely loyal. Watch their skin, as their skin is sensitive. They love to be brushed and should have a strong, straight back. Mine never smells, despite the long hair, and never sheds or causes anyone allergies (ever), which is super amazing. I prefer to have mine professionally groomed, as their nails grow fast and pro grooming keeps them looking their beautiful best.

Actually you are right about the good luck. I have one in silver color and he's a lucky charm since he has come. And he has come to my house on his own. We didn't bought him or found him. He found our home himself and it's been 8 beau years with him.

Is he kind? I intend to buy it myself, but I have second thoughts... I have a neighbor and her Tibetanian is aggressive and moody. But it’s probably like that because of the owner...

We had 2 TTs. Born in 1982 and 84. Both were show dogs, and one was a champion. Not sure about the comments on shedding. Ours shed in large clumps all over the house. My Mom kept sheets on the couches to keep all the shedding hair off her furniture.🤔

Mine's very territorial. He spends most of the day in the garden and god forbid anyone walk past the fence.
@Lionforaday
@Lionforaday 3 года назад
@@silverscreen842 Is that because he spends most of the day in an enclosed backyard? I'm not criticizing it, I just wonder if he'd be like that otherwise. I've heard shih tzu can be barky while mine was quiet as a church-mouse - however, I took her everywhere with me, including to work each day. I wonder about the breed generally. For eg. Lhasa Apso translates to "barking sentinel dog" (that should tell you something), whereas shih tzu are usually quieter.

A common comparison. However, upon closer look, a totally, completely, entirely different breed, with distinctly different features and temperament. No relation at all in terms of dog DNA.
