Cultural Identity Crisis: Tibetan Youth in India
The Tibetan refugees who fled to India in the 1950s and 60s found temporary shelter, but for many, especially the younger generation, the question of identity has become a lifelong struggle. Caught between the spiritual roots of Tibetan Buddhism and the modern pressures of assimilating into Indian society, young Tibetans often find themselves in limbo, neither fully Tibetan nor fully Indian.
Though some still hold onto the dream of returning to a free Tibet, for many younger Tibetans, India has become home, yet citizenship remains elusive. The Tibetan diaspora in places like Dharamshala and Bylakuppe has built strong communities, but the fight for political recognition continues.
As Tibetans navigate through their quest for belonging, some advocate for Indian citizenship, while others remain deeply connected to the dream of Tibet’s independence. Their journey reflects a delicate balance between honoring their cultural legacy and integrating into the rapidly changing landscape of India.
Many young Tibetans find themselves pursuing careers and education in India, contributing to society but facing challenges like racism, statelessness, and a sense of alienation. The next chapter of this community's story remains to be written - will it be one of integration, or will the dream of a free Tibet continue to dominate their hearts?

Prior to 1959 Tibetans were under a Slavey system called serfdom. Tibetans were subject to working free labor to serve higher monks that held power in their society and no private ownership of land which was held strictly by high serf monks. Pedo Lama with help of the CIA tried to retain and preserve this system. Pedo Lama tried challenge the workers party with the help and backing of India and american CIA. In 1959 following the CCPs exile of the Pedo Lama. The feudal serfdom system was abolished. Land reform was introduced and redistribution to the people/peasants. Today Xizang aka Tibet is a very prosperous place. Way more prosperous than both India and America. 🇨🇳

As an outsider and Nepalese national, probably it is not appropriate to suggest Tibetans or Bhotias. However, living close to Tibetan community in harmony in Kathmandu I would like them to reconcile and talk to Chinese Government to return to their homeland. I think Tibetans in Nepal are more reconciled with locals than in India. Reason, Nepalese and Tibetans have many commons. Do not go after democracy and freedom as such which is matter of fact an abstract thing and just a political tool. At the end of day what matters the most is your living and life. Tibet is now more prosperous and livable place in comparison to cities in India and Nepal and better than many EU and US cities. After all Tibet or Bhot is your mother land and you own it. Please reconcile. Use Buddhism - compassion and perseverance in practical life not just as preaching theory. Love from Nepal and best wishes.

Very sensible suggestion to these people whose parents have, in hindsight, made the wrong decision of running away for political reason to India and now finding themselves kind of lost and abandoned in their host country. Yet many of the 2nd and 3rd generation are still brainwashed into holding the dream of fighting for an independent Tibet, a dream that will likely disappoint themselves for the rest of their lives, either fighting from India or other 3rd country and turned into a floating lost tribe drifting with a lost cause to never ever return to Tibet again. That's the sad reality and there are millions and millions of other people around the world like them.

The McMahon Line was first drafted in 1913, and the treaty to ratify them (Simla Accords) was never signed by the Republic Of China(ROC) who had just overthrown the Qing dynasty. There was no such thing as the McMahon Line in 1890, and China isn't disputing where the Line was drawn, she's disputing the validity of the Line in its entirety. The primary Indian claim is that the ROC did sign the Simla Accords because a British official called Olaf Caroe fabricated a narrative in 1938 where the ROC signed the Simla Accords (they didn't) and ceded parts of Tibet to the Raj. In 1963 a British diplomat compared a pre-1938 treaties compendium with the post-Caroe compendium and found that Caroe had changed the note on the ROC's not signing the Simla Accords into one where the ROC signed it and considers the Indo-Tibetan border finalised. Nehru picked up a copy of Caroe's fabricated compendium so he got the impression that his country was legally entitled to more than she actually was. Compounding this was the US' decision to add fuel to the flames by declaring the McMahon Line as the legitimate boundary in an attempt to contain the spread of communism, despite reservations from the US State Department and protests from the fiercely non-communist Chiang Kai-Shek, leader of the ROC. However, we all know Nehru irreversibly altered his country's relations with China in 1962, so by 1963, when the fabrication was discovered, it was already too late to stem the tide of Indian nationalism based on the false compendium entry. And that leaves us with the situation today, in the aftermath of a British attempt to de jure carve out a piece of Chinese territory which failed but had some success de facto, then a British fabrication of her failed attempt to carve out Chinese territory, then an Indian acceptance of the British fabrication alongside American endorsement, and a Chinese refusal to accept the fabrication as anything remotely legal. Some Indians recognise that they don't actually have a legal claim to South Tibet, so they've begun using a different claim in that the people living in South Tibet want to be part of India more than China; in essence, a claim based on the principle of self-determination. This is India's secondary claim. However, as history has shown time and time again (Catalonia, Confederate States, Taiwan, Corsica, Chechnya, Tibet, Naxalites), without the permission of the larger body, a smaller section of the population will not be allowed to separate from its original country regardless of what they want. A much more detailed account of the McMahon Line and its history is available here, written by Peter Lee who, contrary to impressions given by his surname, is not at all Chinese.

During the construction of the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway by the Chinese government, more than 3,000 soldiers and civilians sacrificed their precious lives. The two highways are more than 4,360 kilometers long, starting from Chengdu in the east, Xining in the north, and Lhasa in the south. They are important passages connecting Tibet and the mainland. During the construction process, many road construction soldiers and staff sacrificed their lives in the face of difficulties such as high temperatures, hypoxia, complex geology, and material shortages. Especially on the Erlang Mountain section, an average of 7 soldiers sacrificed their lives per kilometer. The victims are all Han people, and the beneficiaries are Tibetan compatriots. When these wandering Tibetans try to split Tibet, you should first ask the Tibetans whether they agree. If you have watched the Tibet video, you should know the current urban environment in Tibet. Chinese farmers and herdsmen all own land and pastures. They do not need to pay any fees to the state. Instead, the state will provide various subsidies such as food, fertilizers, and machinery. They They enjoy more preferential policies and benefits than Han people.

It's a hidden fact almost 80% of Tibetian in India have indian citizenship because its the most easiest way to get one through undertable channels. Tibetians refugees are among the most diluated communities supported by Western opportunist who want to see China downfall. I have visited China and Tibet thrice in 2024 and plan to go again next month to Lhasa one of best place I always love to visit. This tibetians refugees influx has been growing yearly and taking HHDL excuse still many tibetians cross over Himalayes every year. China has given them so much and who are still in Tibet don't like to call them Tibetians instead they love calling them chinese of Tibetian origin and if one see the present day Tibet, its just mind blowing. This tibetian hoax will remain till HHDL is alive thenafter this people who called them tibetian refugees will slowly devolve in India as Indians. Tibetians are the most unfriendly people ever seen outside of Tibet, if not one can try them weather in US, Europe or in Asia.

Tibetans in India are not appreciated and India just takes advantage of them and HHDL. They would do best to leave and move on to having a wonderful life. India does not allow Tibetans any real rights whatsoever, despite pretending they do everything for them. The violence against them is rife and getting worse. The corruption within India affects the Tibetan diaspora terribly. Places like Dharamshala- McLeod have been taken over by outsiders. India does not allow Tibetans their rights to citizenship, despite claiming they're ENTITLED to it... or to vote or own property in India. India needs to stop pretending life is good for Tibetans in India. Talk about how Tibetans are even sometimes returning to Tibet. Tibetans want to live their lives in peace. The idea that people are afraid to take up citizenship in India is incorrect, as they are taking up citizenship in other countries where they have great opportunities and are welcomed. Why would Tibetans want to be citizens in a country that does not accept them nor value them, despite their incredible support of their adopted country India. TCV also gives education to non Tibetan children. India's policies are corrupt and abusive. Look at how many Indian nationals leave India!

Do you think these bunch of Tibetan people who are living outside China can bring independence of Tibet by living outside of China? Amongst these people how many of them are seeking for Tibet independence? Do you have any data? According to His Holiness Dalai Lama he has clarified umpteen times that "he does not seek any independence from China". So on what ground you're advocating for independence of Tibet from China? Moreover there are 98% of the Tibetan people living in China at the moment. There is no civil unrest going on against the Chinese govt by them. Therefore, taking all that into account, now you tell me who will free Tibet from China? Why you being a Punjabi is so interested in the independence of Tibet when the majority of Tibetans themselves are not interested in the first place. This exposes your envious nature towards China. If language, religion and culture are the criteria for demanding a separate independent nation then what is your take on the Khalistan freedom movement, Kashmir, Nagaland, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Telugu Desam, Kannada desha, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Bengal, Sikkim etc?

GDP per capita of 2,256.59 USD (2021) 3) A state with no clean drinking water/sanitation 4) A state with people fighting/killing among themselves (Manipur etc.) 5) A state with beggars or animals, especially cows, roaming on the streets for food scraps 6) A state with rampant unemployment. That is why you see them sending millions of their unemployed to other countries using cheap labor as a bait and stealing jobs/living space of host countries. Practically invaders.. 7) A state whereby their citizens are dying to leave their country. They hate their country more than they love their country. That is why you see them staying at the host countries permanently with no intention of returning back to their country of origin. 8) A state whereby their women are treated worse than the cows 9) A state with a very weak history (1000+ years of enslavement) ..... 10) the lists goes on.....

A much more detailed account of the McMahon Line and its history is available here, written by Peter Lee who, contrary to impressions given by his surname, is not at all Chinese.

It is a sad story, a tragic story. India granted political asylum to the Dalai Lama but it is now evident, the process had only very limited aim: the aim to embarrass China. Had the Tibetans realised that, they would not have stayed on in India, which offered them no opportunity to flourish or prosper. If, on the other hand, when international sympathy was very high in favour of the Tibetans, they could have sought scholarships from universities in Europe and America and garnered tremendous benefits. Even now, instead of just seeking avenues open individually, His Holiness the Dalai Lama could obtain help for collective benefit. Everyone does not need to be a Lama; let them turn professionals, scientists. academicians; the sky is the limit.

The Dalai wants to keep them poor and ignorant. Easier to control them. He hasn't done anything good for them, not even fight for better living conditions and status from India. He expressed a wish to return to China himself but he doesn't do anything to try and reconcile with China at least to do something for the younger generation. What is going to happen to them when he dies?

@@PChan-yt4uf "The History" is actually quite different from what the media has spread. The insitution of the Dalai Lama" was established by the Celestial Emperor and had appointed two Ambans in Lhasa to assist the Dalai Lama in governance of the country. Likewise, the office of the Panchen Lama was also the gift of the Chinese Emperor, so that while the Dalai Lama looked after the Government of Tibet, the Panchen Lama was appointed as the spiritual head of the country. To afford him greater prominance, the Panchen Lama was ordained to be the spiritual mentor also of the Chinese Emperor. If we are to view the geo-political situation in Tibet in true perspective, this is the first lesson needed to be taught, worldwide. Rest can follow.

Not sure if this is covered in this video, but the biggest problem for young Tibetans is traveling abroad as a tibetan. Indian govt issues a travel document called Identity Certificate(not Indian passport). It takes around 6 months for this travel document to be issued, and it also takes greasing some palms in Indian bureaucracy. The document is valid for 10 yrs, the renewal also takes same time and effort. The foreign embassies don’t like issuing visa on this document Tibetans who eventually get a visa then must again go through Indian bureaucracy to get exit permit and a return to India permit. Overall, it makes travelling very unpleasant experience for Tibetans, and this also makes awkward conversation for Tibetans working in private sector as they can’t travel on short notice.

Forget about getting independence for Tibet, it won't happen unless they have to win battles against the Chinese. After reading all the comments, here’s my small response in general. First of all, for my country and my people. Some people are dissatisfied with the video, and some are calling it anti-India or anti-Tibet. But it's not made for any hidden purpose. It’s about the reality and concerns for both the Tibetan exile government and the Indian government. It’s also a way of saying that maybe people born after 1987 should be eligible to take Indian citizenship, and Tibetans should be able to choose India as their home. Well, it's in the hands of both governments, because law reforms are necessary. I hope this response finds you well. Now, let me address the Chinese bots and their supporters. Chinese bots or puppets, we don’t demean you in any other sense; we condemn you for taking a part of Ladakh and also for claiming Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet, which was never yours and never will be. Do some research, find books, look into real history-don’t just believe the superficial story your country tells you. Many of you deny the existence of Tibet and claim it was never a separate autonomous country. Well, look at yourselves. You hate Tibet and its existence so much that you even changed the name of its ancient kingdom according to your government’s agenda-Xang or whatever. Countries like India, Nepal, and Bhutan, despite knowing that you're a bully in the name of development, still recognize Tibet as a country, because we know the true history that you try to hide. Some people also talk about the Shimla Agreement, McMahon Line, Sikkim, Ladakh, etc. Well, your "Xian" regime will never tell you the real history of how West Tibet was taken, how many battles were fought there, or the Treaty of Ushul. Renaming territories, having disputes with 10-20 countries, and yet you call yourselves a developed nation with bright minds. No doubt you’re a superpower, but the day you learn humanity will be the day you realize that even if you put a bird in a golden cage with proper food and water, it will still want to be free and have its own identity. The same goes for Lhasa and other parts of Tibet. Your development doesn't justify the fact that you invaded that land and killed over a million people during the Cold War. That blood is on your hands, so remember this. Yes, we were a struggling country when His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrived, and we are still developing. Maybe we aren’t earning like your countrymen, maybe we have unemployment and other issues, but despite that, no matter which government we have, we all stand united against bullies like you. I hope Tibetans find a stronger sense of belonging in India. And yes, your bots or hackers can do whatever you want-hack comments or anything else you feel like. But the truth doesn’t change. You are invaders. Once an invader, always an invader.

nbody in china cares about those exiled serfowner CIA tibetans and the Chinese gov don't care about Ladakh or whatever territory they reside. Even tibetans don't care about them, they should just assimilate with Indians like those in Aranchal Pradesh because they will never be real tibetans. The majority of the world recognizes the real Tibet as part of china for centuries. Even the UN does. You can argue about the era between the fall of qing empire to CCP taking over how they were independent, fact is Tibet was just under illegal occupation by a warlord named dalai lama. Most of China was ruled by warlords after the qing empire, until CCP gained control over china again, Tibet is no different. So CIA/Indian bot, Tibet isn't going to be independent because the real Tibetans in Tibetan isn't looking to become independent when they are getting wealthy while the Indian ex-tibetans are living in slum conditons like the rest of india while tibetans can live anywhere in China and live in one of the most technologically advanced country full of opportunites.
