TICK TICK TICK! Dodge 3.6L Pentastar Rocker Arm Repair - 6 Mistakes to Avoid

I racked up some serious FAILS on this project! I thought maybe my mistakes could help others avoid them. At 130,000 miles our 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan started making a loud ticking sound from the engine. And then I learned all about the common and well known issue of failed rocker arms on the 3.6L Pentastar. I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. Links below!

I've been a professional technician over multiple brands. Big props for Showing your failures. You learn more from failures than success. Believe it or not the same stuff goes on behind closed doors at the dealerships.

Dodge has to many fails. So much to learn then. Better to learn from car makers that don’t fail so we can create a reliable vehicle based on what actually works. US automakers have a lot to learn.

Chrysler technician here. We just leave the cam gear tool between the gears, take the bolts out and pull the phasers off the end of the cams enough to remove them without removing the phaser from the chain. This way, you don't have to worry about setting timing up which can be a pain on the pentastar, and the chain doesn't drop or jump. Good job!
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 10 месяцев назад
Yes!!! That was exactly the plan until I could not get them back onto the end of the cams. I didn’t realize I didn’t release the cam chain tensioner enough until later 👍 terrifying thought to have that chain skip a tooth or drop.
@midship_nc
@midship_nc 10 месяцев назад
@sstressfl yeah our tensioner tools are either missing or so used they do not work well anymore. Plus there are two versions now, for the updated 3.6 which are usually missing lol. I don't remove tension when doing lifters and rockers. Just torque the cam down and wiggle the phaser back on, you will have to twist the cam back and forth with a wrench a few degrees to get the index pin mated. It is tight, but possible. And hey, you just saved yourself like...1600 dollars...I think, I don't really keep up with the prices people pay anymore.

Great video on how a normal guy can fix his car as long as he’s researched the job and understands what needs done. As a pro Mechanic for over 40 years I’ve learned some lessons. Take you’re time, make sure you have the right tools and you can do it. Even pros hit stumps everyday . The mistakes you were brave enough to show may be as valuable to viewers as the rest of the video. By the way I despise torx head bolts! Good job!

Thats such encouraging feedback! Thank you 🙏I asked my Dad once, "When did you rebuild your first engine?" He said he was 15 and his dad's car engine failed and they didnt have money to fix it. So he went to the library and found a manual for that car! He told me his motto was "if I can read, I can fix it." Pretty awesome lesson. And of course now we have video and groups, etc etc. Whew! Thanks again for taking time to share your thoughts.

@@sstressfl my brother and I rebuilt our first engine when he was 15 I was 16. We had a old motors manual in the mid 70’s. It was a 327 hi perf Chevy. It ran but not good. We took it to our mechanic buddy and he discovered we put hydraulic lifters on a solid lift cam and wiped out lifters. He installed solid lifters . That 327 in a 64’ El Camino became a local fast car had 4 speed. Those hot rod days prompted us both to go to tech school when we graduated high school and take Diesel Technology. We both had great careers as pro technicians. But it all started with the 327 project. God is good.

Great video! An honest example of the way it goes working on vehicles. I do it everyday for a living working on all different makes and models. Everything always changing and problems are inevitable. Most repairs can be done at home with a reasonable amount of mechanical aptitude but a shop makes things much easier and tools are a must. Some may criticize the decision not to change them all but I will likely do the same. I have a Dodge Charger with the same issue. Thanks for the video! Even people who do this work for a living watch RU-vid videos for guidance. Truth is, we use RU-vid a lot so hats off to RU-vid for providing the platform and a big thanks to everyone taking the time to share their information, not just on this subject matter but everything we learn about at RU-vid University.

Best part of the video is the way you handled the fails. I just went through a similar replacement of all the rocker arms on a Jeep Wrangler. Same engine just rotated 90 degrees as it's rear wheel drive (primary). And yes, I too stripped two of the cam shaft fastener bolts when accidently using a T-27 instead of a T-30.

I have to say, that was an awesome and raw video. I have a 2015 Jeep Gramd Cherokee with the same engine but rear wheel drive so my engine belts face the front of the vehicle, not transversely mounted. It was awesme to watch you repair the problem and NOT pay a dealer or shop upwards of $600 to do the job. WIth your knowledge you will be able to go back in for a variiety of repairs and know what to do and know how to fix the problem or at lelast have a much better idea. I have an oil leak and think the culprit is a wire cought between the valve cover and head. Any way, awesome video. Thanks for sharing.

Oh that is so awesome to hear. From what I read, the rocker failure comes from inconsistent manufacturing quality. Once I felt them in my hand I realized they were very high quality pieces. It must have to do with the metal casting process. Some fall apart. Most don’t. Chrysler supposedly fixed it in 2016. Whatever it was, it certainly didn’t fail due to poor maintenance 😁 my dad taught me that most cars will go and go and go as long as you do the maintenance. Good for you for taking such good care of your 2012. Bless you brother 🙏🙏 thanks for sharing 🙏

I watched one mechanic here on YT that didnt even remove the cams to do this job . It was on a Jeep. He loosened the cam caps and one by one removed the rocker arms and lifters with a magnet . And then replaced them one by one working the cam shaft from back to front .

And I read a lot of mixed reviews of hit or miss quality with the amazon-made-in-china rockers so I bought Melling. I did make a list with links of things I purchased and shared it in the description below the video. And the 36mm socket was about $20 I think. And you'll see a link to the cam tensioner tool. So easy to do. Submerge them in oil first. I did not replace mine because 1) I know a lifter can fail but it’s very rare. I’ve personally never owned a car with a failed lifter. 2) I saw people replaced their lifters but rarely ever saw a lifter caused the problem. It was 99% a rocker. 3) an aftermarket lifter can have a defect and yet none of the factory lifters are bad. I could introduce a new problem. 4) I’ll save my money. That was my thought process. 150k miles and still silent and smooth.

I would try listening with a broom stick... remove a broom stick from its broom head, and place one end on the engine where you think the sound could be, then place the other end gently against your ear. You might find that the sound is always there but its easier to hear when the engine is warm because its at a lower rpm. Hope you can diagnose it!

Clean mating surfaces before application 2. For best results, apply to clean, dry surfaces. 3. Clean surfaces with Permatex Brake & Parts Cleaner. 4. Wire brush any loose surface rust. 5. Apply Anti Seize to the parts that require protection. 6. Reassemble parts using normal torque values. 7. Wipe off excess material. 8.
