Chill is buggin out, Sure shaq never led the league in rebounding but his dominance is still undeniable and he was a good passer out of the post. Sure he wasn’t the greatest on defense but he was no slouch either especially in 2000. 3x defense second team Offensive players were scared to come to the paint because he was there. Shaq was a very good defender who played strong post defense and defended the rim well but was less effective on the perimeter. When motivated, Shaq was a physical freak who excelled on defense. But his conditioning and effort varied throughout his career and that kept him from being an all-time great defender....

He had more offensive rebounds also. A 42 year old man made 53% of his shots, grabbed 13 rebounds and 8 offensive rebounds against the leagues leading rebounder! Kareem's team won that last match up as well. Again, I ask, what would a prime Kareem have been able to do against Hakeem? He made 53% of his shots and scored 21 points, at age 42, against the (1987 and 1988 1st team) all defensive center!!

It's important to take a step back and challenge some well established points. I have kareem over lebron but I think its perfectly fair to say that, depending on how you look at it, kareem could not have a GOAT case.

As dominant as Shaq was why would he be leading in rebounds when so many possessions were him dunking the ball? And Shaq not leading in rebounding means nothing because he's had some great rebounding seasons and others were just insane to be over him. He averaged over 13 boards his first 3 years in the league. He also averaged 11 and more the next 4 seasons. To say he wasnt a dominant rebounder because he wasn't the leader is crazy. This is easily the worst argument I've seen. Not because kareem doesnt have a case. But because him never leading the league is suuuuuch a bad take. Shaqs DRPG has always been impressive but his ORPG has always been low because he's putting up 19 attempts at the rim his damn self

I always hate the "never lead the league in..." argument because you can put up crazy numbers, but maybe there's a guy like Rodman or Mutombo who is a specialist in your era that keeps you from leading in a stat. Like maybe your stats would have led the league in a different era. Like don't say you led the league in something without stating what the per game total was.
