TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy WearOS 3 is coming to the TicWatch! Two years later, after tons of delays, updates are always welcome, but is this software too little, too late? Is this Mobvoi's problem? What should the TicWatch do next?

What I really want is a video showing the differences between WearOS 2 and 3 on my Ticwatch 3. I am sure many people are wondering if they should upgrade and what they will get when/if they do.

Thanks. After seeing the ratings and comments on the Mobvoi Health app (a whopping 1.9 stars, yeah!), this seems like wise advice. Now, I need to remove the warning notifications about upgrading. I fear that if I upgrade my phone, I may have no choice but to upgrade the watch.

Great info. Yes, too little, too late!! I have the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS and had given up on ever getting the 3.0. I totally agree that Mobvoi did a completely sh*t job of communicating their promise for the Wear 3.0 upgrade for two years. So much so, that I'm put off the brand entirely. And the lack of proper Assistant support on TicWatch is a show stopper for me. I'm currently using the Pixel Watch 2, and while like you, I actually prefer my TicWatch hardware, the Pixel Watch 2 is a better user experience IMHO.

This is why we need RISC-V on smartwatches. At least Fossil and Mobvoi can make their own chip and software compatible to it.

I disagree that the manufacturers should try to stay away from WearOS, on the contrary, with big names like Xiaomi with the new Watch 2 Pro, the hope is that they are able to make WearOS more mainstream and encourage others to bring more options to the table. The problem is definitely on Google's side, making Samsung (aside from themselves) be the only other company that gets updates first/faster while not working with others is a huge mistake and they should be trying to solve that, although I'm not sure if they event want to do so. I'm not sure if I fully agree on the different apps for different manufacturers issue, I personally think that's not the issue per se but rather the fact that manufacturers can skin the software just like Android, which I believe is going to lead to some issues. Other than that, at least the watches are getting updated, but the uncertainty of updates is also another problem to solve and that's definitely on Mobvoi and Google. It really sucks, I bought a Galaxy Watch 6 Classic and a TicWatch Pro 5 for my dad and while I know I'm going to be updated and fine, the Pro 5 is another story, we need to have a reliable software update policy, much like phones.
@xiondFirst
@xiondFirst 7 месяцев назад
Ticwatch Pro 5 falls into another issue where Google doesn't want to support the new chipset that's in that watch or Fossil. Hell Google assistant doesn't even work on that watch because Google was like nahhh. While Mobvoi should communicate more and just be honest. I wouldn't blame them entirely here.
@vakama94
@vakama94 7 месяцев назад
@@xiondFirst uh, that is incorrect. The Pixel Watch 2 and the Ticwatch Pro 5 have the same chip or are at least in the same generation (Snapdragon W5 gen1), why would they not want to support the chip when their own watch is using it? I think you might be confusing it with the Snapdragon 4100 that the 3 had.

WearOS support is trash, even by Samsung. The only WearOS watch with barely decent support is the Pixel. Otherwise, Samsung only updates their top of the line every 4 months, even if there are bugs that are urgent.

@@jimengab that I don't know, the Watch6 Classic I bought is my first one and I've seen quite a few updates since I got it, I'd imagine the others are the same. The ones I know could use more updates are the Mobvoi and Xiaomi watches

Funny that after traveling, I was gifted a Ticwatch E3 without buttons (it drowned but those two buttons were the things that got damaged). I'm still trying to understand Wear OS and now, there's an update that I don't know how to do in this watch. I thought WearOS was the app to do it but it is so minimal that's crazy. Compared to the other gift: An Amazfit GTR, the watch is bad on battery. Almost a week of battery, but also not many apps because it doesn't use WearOS. Still, it tells time and notifications, which I want the most.

My only concern of every smartwatch maker moving to their own proprietary OS like Xiaomi and HyperOS is Google Pay. Google Pay should also be allowed to be installed on any proprietary watch OS that has NFC feature given how Google forcing manufacturers to make their own Health app on Wear OS 3.

It's staggering how Google screwed over the smaller companies like Mobvoi with Wear OS. Especially as at the time it was running with flagship watch specs. I have a Tic Watch Pro 3 and had long given up and switched back to my Analogue watch . If Mobvoi had pointed out that the delay was down to Google, perhaps they wouldn't be getting the negative feedback on those using their products. It's really frustrating when we know that the Tic Watch Pro 3 was probably better specced than the first pixel watch, but them siding with Samsung when really it should be the smaller companies that need the boost. Definitely not getting another android smart watch. Perhaps you are correct in them running their own OS; like Huawei do.
@SomeGadgetGuy

At some point I hope we see better disclosures on how all this broke down. I'm largely speculating on what I see with Fossil also falling apart. I bet those companies have to sign crazy NDAs, so we'll probably never get a proper accounting. Given the regulatory actions Google faces in the EU, it would be a VERY good time for them to help their OTHER partners close the gap and compete better.

It's a shame because there was so much hope when Samsung moved over to wear, and there were rumors of a pixel watch.... There was hope that wear OS would really see some advancement and attention. Instead, it's basically just become a part of either a pixel or Samsung ecosystem... Not what I want because I don't really like those products. Lackluster battery life. Are there any smart watches outside wear os that have a decent voice notes app? It's one of the primary use cases I have for a watch.... When my ticwatch 3 brakes, I'm almost certainly leaving wear OS... I just don't know if amazefit, Garmin, Huawei...hell... I would be open to something completely generic. Sure and yes I agree completely with your critique. I am frustrated movboi, But I didn't really care about the lack of the updates until Google removed support for assistant masto on wear 2. They desperately seem to want me to get a pixel watch or Samsung but I have no interest mostly because of battery life.

Okay so what I think is going on when it comes to Wear OS 4 it's for one they needed to get three done on the older hardware because I honestly think that what they built software wise is very easy to get on both watches once they were done with the other one so what I'm hoping is that at the same time that Pro 5 is getting WearOS 4 that they would also update the threes to that too but obviously we got to get it this rollout done first before that made it happen also I think it also just has to do with what you were talking about Google and Samsung kind of working together that they may not have really given all of the full information out there for the watch manufacturers to get everything updated to 4.0 so they might have been just using this opportunity to wait focus on what they needed to do before they would worry about getting the Pro 5 to 4

I don't really care about the upgrade, but I do find it king of funny that my tickwatch pro 3's battery died out of warrant (!) before the update arrived on it. I did get a 35% discount on the 5 and I'm happy with it. But I feel like Google should be more inclusive with it's software or it is going to drive away smaller manufacturers from Wear OS.

I finally got the pro 3 ultra because they have a sale AND that it supports iOS (my Active 2 died in a swimming accident, and found the sad reality of WearOS3 on the newer Galaxy Watch). The only 3 watches I have used have been the Galaxy Gear S from eons ago, the Withings HR Steel (I think it was called) and currently the Pixel Watch 2. I like it well enough so far, but it has an annoying habit of being in DND mode whenever I, I don't know, wouldn't mind being disturbed? I need more time with it to really see if I am a wearable kind of guy again, but every time it scrapes the door jamb or some other part of the house I only notice when something expensive is on my wrist, I miss my Mudman...

Mobvoi is awful in support, but Wear OS is dead after that Samsung sell out move from Google... I don't think that I will get any other smartwatch after my Ticwatch Pro 3 crashes - the dual screen is awesome and a brand new Pixel or Galaxy watch feels like a downgrade. So, congrats for Google by creating Wear OS just to get us to crash and burn with the OS. (What would be Android if Google did that back them? This is just sad.)

Google sadly doesn't do what is best for Android. It does what's best for Google. Hence they let watch os languish and keep putting less features in to AOSP and make it reliant on Google services. IMO the Android team should be broken away from Google to stand on its own as an Independent FOSS project where the team itself dictates the improvements and it all goes into AOSP. Google has no input. They get given AOSP and tailor it for Pixel devices. The OEM's could all chip in to fund the project but have no say in the features or direction. That should be down to consumer polls.

I remember the early days of Android Wear. It got a lot of credit (in the media) for unifying the update process. And by that avoiding the problem of fragmentation, Android still has today. And look where we’re now. It’s actually the reason I switched to Apple.
