I mean the Death Star would have at least been an enviable long term investment... Had it not been sabotaged by it’s head engineer from the get go. Even without the planet killer laser, it was a literal world in and of itself, capable of intergalactic transit on it’s own accord, ferrying *Millions* of assets, from manpower to supplies, tech, R&D, Prisoners and high value VIP’s that held the highest need for protections, all in a planet sized structure built from the strongest materials of an interstellar empire, reinforced with the strongest shields and tractor beams, hordes of various munitions in and on the station, and a menagerie of other defense systems, ect... to the point where it’d probably be easier to fight an actual, natural planet then a Death Star. Holdo’s Hyperspace Ramming maneuver? The Death Stars sheer size and resultant durability would probably allow the station to shrug off any such blows from all but the largest of ships in the galaxy, certainly much larger then Holdo’s, or anything one would expect a struggling rebellion to muster up. Even if the rebellion “could” use such a tactic to destroy the Death Star, it’s likely have to be the largest ship they ever had, stuffed to the brim with practically their entire arsenal to boot, and if the Death Star has systems to shut down nearby Hyperspace transit, them forget it. And to top it all off, if properly stationed and maintained, the Death Star could be expected to serve and be useful for probably Millennia, maybe even forever, potentially to the point where further upgrades would allow it to engage in Trans-galactic travel, and would have been the flagship of an empire on the verge of going from “galactic” to *”universal.”* Look at it like this: The TIE defender would have been the better option for a newborn empire, doubtlessly. BUT if the Empire could have survived the age of serious rebellions, then the Death Star would have been a perfect endgame for an ever expanding empire. An investment like the Death Star would have literal worlds worth of higher potential beyond an equivalent fleet of upgraded star destroyers and other assets. But alas, the timing was off. Such an undertaking would have been best in at least another 30 years minimum once the last of the galaxy’s resistance had been culled.
Problem was Sidious's philosophy. He wanted a weapon that inspired fear, causing entire systems to go into the fetal position. I agree investing the same amount of money into defenders or more ISD's would've been strategically more effective, but people would still think they had a chance.
@@ButFirstHeLitItOnFire While this is true, the point of the Death Star was to use fear to keep the galaxy in line, aka The Tarkin Doctrine. Unfortunately, this backfired. I agree that the DS-1 Deep Space Mobile Battlestation would have been perfect for an Empire triumphant, but Palpatine had this puppy in the works for quite a while. His whole game was to create an endgame scenario so that he could spend his time cheating death and becoming more powerful in the Force. Thus, the Death Star was what would keep the Galaxy in place long enough so that he might transcend the need for any technological terrors. I feel that the TIE Defender was the perfect tool to counter the Rebellion's starfighter guerilla strategy. The best thing the Emperor could have done would be to continue fleetbuilding while slowly building and completing the second station, and then use it as a mobile capital, as Snoke used the Supremacy.
Not only do all these scenes show the TIE Defender's capabilities, they also show Thrawn's excellent abilities in tactical assessment and how well he knows his enemy. He knows how capable they are, maintains realistic expectations throughout, and that allows him to anticipate their moves to counter more effectively. Honestly, if the people under his command would follow his instructions more effectively, the rebels likely wouldn't have outmaneuvered him anywhere near as often.
They couldn't have outmaneuvered him. Thrawn is just that good but unfortunately for him too many in the Empire are so inept. Heck the only reason why Thrawn is even with the Empire is because of their vast resources and power which he intends to use to benefit the Chiss. At the end of the day Thrawn's loyalty was always to his people but he worked for the Empire to ensure they wouldn't come after his people.
hmm i was thinking about that scene and it would have made sense if he were to think it shields were also down for a time. if his shots pierced it would have killed the pilot.
That was the show making a reference to the classic movie, Patton, where General Patton started firing his pistol at a German plane strafing the street he was on, lol.
I noticed the different markings on the TIE Defenders, but I didn’t realise until now that _every_ TIE Defender in the show has a different appearance. The first was plain grey, as it’s just a plain TIE Defender. The second has red markings that presumably mark it as a TIE Defender Elite. The third has yellow markings that presumably mark it as belonging to that Commander.
To be fair, the rebels would have been wiped out, but they would have needed to sacrifice a lot of imperial control over a lot of the outer rim and other sections, since a Tie Defender is like 6 Tie Fighters in cost, or more. The initial wave of rebels would be destroyed, yes, but the empire ran the risk of letting a much, *much* larger portion of the galaxy rebel against them, and we all know how palpatine governs, control is more important.
@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly That is why the Tie Hunter should be standard. It cost only 100K (70K for a regular tie) but has, twice the firepower / can ionize them, proton torpedos, shields, hyperdrive, and faster / more maneuverable than even the tie interceptor which is 75K in legends. They would actually save money since a lot fewer ties should be taken down with shields and such. They only produced the Tie Hunter for special forces. This is how I would set it up. - Tie version of the vulture droid which would cost around 40K. It would work exactly like how CIS vulture droid worked. Overwhelm them with numbers but don't use pilots. Plus it even had missiles, pull off maneuvers that humans can't cause of GForce, explode on command, and do suicide crashes onto the enemy ships if needed. Tie/D is stupidly expensive and I think a horrible option as I don't think it's even that good. Plus its design is ugly as f@#:) - Tie hunter as standard - Tie defender for best pilots if they want them - Tie bomber of course. -Tie Phantoms (Extra but would be really helpful) In Legends one of the reasons why there were no droids really used by the Empire was kinda dumb. Palpatine did not want the civilians to have PTSD from the clone wars. Not cause he was nice of course but to keep the public in their favor. Pretty dumb in my opinion. The Imperial Senate even passed bills forbidding their use on the front lines.
That's what made Thrawn such a good villain. He wasn't evil as such, he wasn't arrogant, and he wasn't too proud to back off when he knew he'd lost. Extract from 'The Last Command' Joruus C'baoth (mad Dark Jed): You never would have spoken to the Emperor that way. Thrawn: On the contrary. On no less than four occasions I told the Emperor I would not engage a foe I was not yet adequately prepared to defeat. Joruus C'baoth: Only fools spoke to the Emperor that way. Fools, or those tired of life. Thrawn: The Emperor thought so too. The first time I refused his orders he called me a traitor and gave my attack force to someone else. Following its' destruction, he knew better than to ignore my recommendations.
@@babs2952 nah, Ace Combat has been around since the 90s, and even though AC7 was the first game in the series to allow the player to do post stall maneuvers, enemies in those games could do them since AC2
I wonder if Thrawn standing his ground and shooting at the fighter is a reference to the movie 'Patton', which depicts General George Patton doing the same against a pair of German bombers.
That’s not plot armor, if that was a normal TIE Sabine would get shot in the head, Thrawn’s shots were that accurate, but because it’s a TIE/D Elite the shots got deflected by the shields.
If Sidious was smart, he would have known that a superfighter that could easily best any fighter the rebels could come up with and even damage warships was a better investment than an oversized space station that couldn't be everywhere at once and was only useful for subjugation
@@CorwinTheOneAndOnly most but not all. The Empire can't call the entire rebellion traitors just because some imperials defected. That's like saying all Americans are racist just because of some aholes.
That is a by the book soldier: you don’t have to die for some failure of a politician who could’t keep the corrupt republic senate and decided Terrorism was the way to go.
The tie defender, in my opinion, would have been a turning point of all naval engagements going forward had it been properly developed into the imperial navy. As a RAW, someone who knows his way around the cockpit, but isn’t the best, was able to take down three trained tie, interceptor‘s, or considered elites above tie fighters. if every single fighters an imperial navy was made as a tie defender, there would be no naval engagement that the Empire was losing. The empire would’ve had the superior starfighter advantage, which would’ve severely weekend, the rivals, because rebels relied on small craft, and advanced shielding and weapons.
I love that it sounds like a Striker _and_ they referenced the Striker when they were tracking the fight Wish those sounds were public… they're so cool
I like how the Tie Defender is introduced. Up to this point, most people know the basic's of tie's. always needing to be carried in and pretty weak. Then This thing shows up. It jumps out of hyperspace on its own, and immediately rains heck and havoc on the rebellion. Its hit with a laser cannon but it does nothing, has it just returns with powerful laser barrages on the squadron. Its taken what we know about Tie fighter's, and chucked it out the window. We know a swarm of regular tie fighters is a problem, but seeing how much damage ONE of these Defender's cause. I think this also feeds into its design, being completely different from all other Tie fighters. The tie advance still only had 2 wings. This thing has 3 wings, completely different from all other variants, truly signifying its not like the rest. Its not disposable like the fighter and interceptor. Its not a prototype like the advance. This thing, is a fully tested, fully operational, product, ready to rain hell on the rebellion. Then there's the TIE Elite, which isn't even making the same sound has a TIE, it almost sounds like it isn't even a Tie anymore, its something completely different. It even launch's missile, something that LITTERALLY NO TIE HAS BEEN SEEN DOING (I say see because yes the advance does have missiles but we never see them use it. And the bomber is the bomber. not much of a threat)
Now that was a true beauty, Zaarin's TIE Defender. The Alt-universe Thrawn variant feels like a cheap knock-off... come on, no ion cannons?! Granted, there's the beast known as the Missile Boat in mind.
I was first introduced to the Tie Defender in Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption. Love at first sight. When they first showed the blueprints in the series, I gasped so loudly. Add one more reason I love the animated series
Death star was cool and all but I feel like it should have been developed after the TIE defender project was completed so they could recover money and then actually get budget to build a battle station. That could have made a deadly combo of tie defenders filling the DS's hangars
An interesting concept, but not doable, considering how expensive the tie defender is in comparison to standard tie fighters, 300 000 credits vs 60 000. Thats 5 tie fighters to 1 tie defender. Even the tie interceptor is much cheaper then the tie defender at 120 000 credits. Don't get me wrong, I completely agree that if every tie fighter was replaced with defenders then the empire would have rained supreme for sure, but the shere cost on that scale would not have been doabol, also considering that at a rough estimate that the empire had at its minimum made 4,2 milioen tie fighters. Maybe have say, the ace of every star destroyer fly on defenders, could maybe work at the start and work in more afterword.
Its probably far more viable to invest in developing a fleet of tie defenders than to be an idiot and build a second death star with all of the weaknesses of the first.
@@hggs4466 Not just any rebel ships but there biggest ships with ease. Those things were built to munch rebel ships and keep on trucking just like the B-wing was built to munch ISD's.
@@hggs4466 Absolutely! Since the Rebellion relied on starfighters for the most part, having something that can counter that be mass produced would've been greatly beneficial.
@@welkingunther5417 not only that but most of its assets like It's leader ship for the most part was held most within rather venerable ships that without fighter protection would lead to the head of the rebellion being chopped off effectively
You forgot the clip where the Arquitens deploys two TIE Defenders to attack Ezra and Sabine when they were raiding the communications outpost, the giant sat.dish.
The death star cost over 1 trillion credits. With that money you could give every isd a compliment of TIE defenders plus two lancer class frigate escorts.
2:09 These are what the rebels are lawbreakers in war you cannot attack an enemy ship that can not fight and some rebels like him just see it as a game
Looking back at Star Wars in general, it would feel like earthly laws and customs of war like the Geneva conventions have the same respect you’d give your toilet paper.... actually that’s too kind a comparison, at least toilet paper gets hoarded these days. Someone actually did a collection of onscreen war crimes committed through the clone wars series: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-onmbtPL1N1c.html
Oh as a Fan of the old DOS TIE Fighter game, this made me have a smile on my face. Too bad it didn't have ion cannons mounted on the top wing/radiator like in the game though.
Well spoken, and even moreso with the X-Wing video game's Battle of Turkana being a far better X-Wing introduction compared to... whatever the kriff Rebels Season 4 morbidly gave us.
Ironic is, Vader did USE the TIE Defender in a Thrawn book and that was him who recommended some improves to Thrawn that it leads to the TIE Defender Elite model.
no that’s not a cobra, to achieve a actual cobra the plane needs to pitch more than 100 degrees, that’s just a aerobatic manoeuvre that looks like a cobra.
Is know one gonna talk about how cold Thrawn is by just standing there and firing at Ezra and Sabine . The best Imperial Admiral Hope to see him in Ashoka
I have a feeling that the Tie Defender will return in the new Ahoska serie. The reason is with the return of Thrawn he may want to bring back the program for his fleet?
people compare the x-wing to the F-15 but I'd say its more like the Su-27...its the heavyweight fighter of the underdogs in real world air forces. Hell the successive iterations (like the Su-33 or early Su-35) have canards on them (like the T-85 x-wing)
@@Chadaface The Su-35 doesn't have canards actually. The 33, 34, 37 and 30SM models have. Anyway. Officially the X-wing has been said to be inspired by the Spitfire of WW2, whereas the TIE fighters are Messers/Zeroes. At least in the narrative sense. I do agree though that the X-85 has the best design out of X-wing types so far, at least in the new canon.
"cmon you bastards, take a shot at me right in the nose!" "get back here Thrawn, we need a Fleet commander, not a casualty!" *shoots at the Tie Defender* "if i could find the person flying, i'd give them a medal"
Carry proton bombs or torpedoes that's going to be a problem for a Capital ship like a Mon Calamari cruiser without any escorts being a Corellian Corvette and the replenishment ships GR-75s
@@spynix0718I wonder if they fire it in a barrage would that be enough to take down the replenishment ships GR 75s followed by the capital ship escorts Corellian Corvette. The realistic option for an Imperial Admiral would have been something like this TIE Defenders get released first and then have the Arquitens Imperial Star Destroyers jump to lightspeed with the Defenders then launch the TIE Bomber
7:44 You know what gets me off? The i in the sentence is not capitalized while every other letter is, also its assault Also based on your logic (the i) it’s spelled THiRD
I love seeing X-Wing blown to bits by TIEs .. Too bad the Empire had too many internal problems. Admiral Zaarin destroyed most of TIE Defender factory plants.
