One reason why the prequels felt like let-downs is that the small scenes in this game felt so much more like Star Wars than anything Lucas could come up with. He should handed on the responsibility much earlier.
This game was UNREAL. And if you didn't play it with a joystick, you were missing out incredibly. I was the greatest starpilot in the galaxy at 10 years old.
Thank you for your service! The wrist is still working, and that is the ultimate evidence of a mysterious force. For it was stressed to the optimum maximum, back in those days. The Emperor Protects!
The Sith can probe people's minds you know. That's how he figured out Leia and Luke are siblings, so he probably did the same with Harkov in regards to his fleet.
Same for Episode I: Racer, the original Battlefront duology, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, Republic Commando, and Empire at War. For non-PC games, I'll also say the same to Bounty Hunter, the RotS video game adaptation, and Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader.
+Kenny Dominic How do you show yourself to be an UBER BOSS? Destroy your enemy via his own arrogance, addictions, and patterns. In others words: make him destroy himself.
This was such an immersive game. I felt like a pilot in the Imperial Navy. I liked how the story focused on aspect of the Empire beyond just Empire vs. Rebels. The Empire had to squash civil wars, deal with pirates and defectors and I was there for all of it. The mechanics of the game greatly improved upon that of its predecessor. What I wouldn't give for a remake of the X-Wing trilogy (X-Wing Alliance, TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance). Sorry but X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter was the lame duck in the series.
There is a fan made remaster of Tie Fighter out now, based on an updated x wing alliance engine. I just played it and it's amazing. The old cutscenes, voice acting and midi music can be kept in.
I remember first flying the TIE Advanced thinking how bad ass it was after flying your standard TIE Fighter, Interceptor and Bomber then Gunboat. By the time we got the TIE Defender, the TIE Advanced seemed so outdated.
I think they adjusted a few things in X-Wing Alliance. The TiE Advanced is a little more maneuverable, but can’t take a concussion missile. The TIE Defender is faster and more armored but can’t turn quite as quickly.
+e21big I am not sure if you're joking or not, I will assume you are for fun, but during Harkov's screams he had mentally given away (quite easily) all the info Vader had needed mentally.
It is the first cut scene. I don't know that he's a mercenary per say, I think he'd just fight for which ever side him more whereas a mercenary looks for one task. However, no matter how you slice it is just a fleet under his command ready to be paid to turn over all equipment, men, leadership, and more....for a price.
+Tigerman1138 I love TIE Fighter.. but that doesnt make sense.. 1-The alliance didnt had the money or resources to pay an entire imperial fleet as mercenaries.. 2-Even if they had, would you trust an Imperial fleet that will join you only for money?
***** A fleet willing to join you for a price will turn against you for a higher price... and the Empire is capable of paying more .. sure they didnt wanted to pay more and just wanted to destroy the traitors.. but from Mon Mothma perspective you couldnt help but think that whatever you can pay.. the empire could pay even more
This is still the best space combat simulator that I've played. The graphics nowadays look a little outdated but boy did I love the story and story lines. The gameplay still outclasses most if not all space combat games of today. I wonder how the game would be and look with todays computer hardware and consoles.
Cybermat47 Actually, it is Rise of Flight I meant to say :( I also used to play Aces of the Pacific. Wish they'd re-make that game with updated graphics and such.
***** That's what most FPS are like. Most air combat games nowadays are arcade style - with health bars, arrows showing you where the enemy is, etc, etc.
DosBox is your best friend - the game runs perfectly in it. All you need to do is copy all of the game's files into a folder and then mount it as a "CD". Works like a charm :)
Tiny nitpick that's always bothered me. Admiral Thrawn wearing a white uniform before his promotion to Grand Admiral. It even calls him "Vice Admiral Thrawn", but has him wearing the distinctive white uniform of a Grand Admiral.
I know. That, and his voice, really irritated me at the time. But now, looking back, I can appreciate the game for what it is. Their artists and voice over people obviously never read the novelisations, but this was for a niche market and was pretty good for what it was. As someone says, this game (and X WIng) *felt* more Star Wars than the Prequels, or many of the other attempts at a game. Even Episode VII wasn't quite *right*, somehow. This game still had that lightening-in-the-bottle quality.
I remember Thrawn made a cameo in one of the books from the Galaxy of Fear series for young readers. He's only a captain in the book, but the cover art still shows him in the grand admiral uniform.
Maybe the uniform is just for the audience's easy interpretation. One can't think of Thrawn well without the Grand Admiral outfit, you know. Must say, though, Rebels Thrawn has the best voice. Hmm, I don't know, the Prequels has a lot of gems, especially in its side material like the RotS novelization, the Republic comics, and video games like Republic Commando.
Now it seems he keeps giving Ahsoka so much support it’s unbelievable. Hell, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was revealed she was the Chosen One instead of Anakin :P
And people eating up The Mando where the Stormtroopers are completely incompetent. Even the Dark Troopers were ineffective because Mando's armor is apparently invulnerable to the point a Darktrooper slammed his head through the bulkhead of the ship and his helmet wasn't even scratched. Then they just job to Luke and all the fanboys went nuts.
+BossHossGT500 That is actually a possibility. Lando's copilot, Nien Nunb, is speaking in a native Kenyan tongue---two actually---and that would be a cool group of people to see....especially as a villian, not all cute and cuddly aliens are good guys.
agreed.. The game was HARD if you wanted to complete all the secondary and bonus objectives.. I probably spent more hours playing this than any other game in my life.
Perfect balance between complexity and accessability. But now that every game has to be compatible to a ps4 controller it is unlikely we get something like that ever again.
best part of this game is that is has a nice story, and make you an important part of it, like you really belong to this game world. "We are here to honor one..." wow... Emperor Palpatine himself acknowledged me... That is just awesome.
04:51 Zarin : we will continue our destruction of the emperors military industrial centers soon he will have nothing but his pitiable force to rely on. seriously zarin, his pitiable forces? you mean his fleet of 25000 star-destroyers and the resources of a galaxy yes truly pitiable
When star wars first came out, it was plain simple: Good vs evil, Rebellion = good guys and Empire = bad guys. Throughout the 90's, Star Wars stories became more complex, it gave the Empire more characters and even sympathy (for example the Thrawn trilogy and TIE Fighter). It gets to the point where it makes you feel like the Empire were the real good guys. Unfortunately, after Disney bought Star Wars, they went back the basics and made the Empire cartoonishly evil. Take Rebels for example
The Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 5 "Where is your master!? Where is Grand Admiral Thrawn!?" Me: THERE HE IS!!! On his way to Coor-iss-Can't!! Excited!!!
*Eventually it turned out that Admiral Harkov was right...the rebels DID win the war, after all...* *And Admiral Zaarin is just an evil fuck, seeing how the rebels were still strong an' the Empire could focus on building a new Death Star even with getting harassed by both the rebels and Admiral Zaarin, his coup attempt was doomed from the start...*
Greatest video game ever. I love how the game makes you sympathize with the Empire and see the Rebels as terrorists... All the new games portray the Empire as sadistically evil, this game was an example of a well done, less biased look at membership in the Galactic Empire.
I honestly think this game made me resent the rebels even more, amazing how they manipulated some members of the empire to betray the empire......causing long term problems in the galaxy that was much more devestating than the clone wars and civil war combined
@@TheKrazyk2010 The Rebel Alliance definitely established a few chemical missile plants on Alderaan since Bail Organa’s government turned a blind eye towards the clandestine weapon tests
Even in this day and age of photorealistic CGI cutscenes, the cutscenes in this game have a certain charm and appeal to them, that are never going to be outdated.
Omg memory’s I was 16 when this came out it was the main reason why I brought a pc, after watching the game on my friends pc, got my dad to get a custom built pc the old 486 with a whole 8meg of ram and a massive 512meg of storage, with a disk drive and I think I had a 15” super vga monitor, all costing nearly 1000 uk pounds and this spec at the time was pretty impressive. The next game that forced me to upgrade was good old duke nukem.
I believe that Lord Vader gave a pardon to Admiral Harkov's forces and welcomed them back into the Imperial fold in exchange for information about the Rebel Alliance's operations
@Silverknight171 The officers would have been sent to the interrogation squad as they have valuable information with Darth Vader prowling the detention block like Dr House
I remember when I played this game a long time ago, Star Wars as a whole back then was very unpopular, and was religated to only niche groups of geeks.
I loved how the plot tied into the original Thrawn trilogy! Man.....I spent so much time with this game as a kid! Looking forward to devoting some time to the total conversion!
4:51 - "Soon he will have nothing but his pitiful Force to rely on!" Lol. If only Zaarin could've seen the future and watch Palpatine come back from the dead and overload an entire armada of ragtag ships with Force lightning of unlimited power!
Wow, I need to get that version! I only ever had the floppy disks without the expansion packs. Serving under Thrawn was the best the first time, but several campaigns in a row?? I've really been missing out!
I wouldn't be surprised if Thrawn had a message like "Nice try my friend" put into a command viewer right as the ship's cloaking device reacted catastrophically with the hyperdrive.
Still one of the best Star Wars, combat flight sim, and video gaming sequels of all time. So much so it makes the likes of X-Wing and even Wing Commander feel obsolete. Bonus if one also read The Stele Chronicles (also, X-Wing's Farlander Papers) and the Official Strategy Guides for help and lore.
I loved this game as a kid, it also was the first time I saw Thrawn and I think it prompted me to get the books... Found them in storage the other day and been hooked yet again. Interestingly enough, Wookieepedia states that although the old guy next to Thrawn in the cutscenes has an uncanny resemblance to Captain Pellaeon, it couldn't be him as they did not meet until after the battle of Endor.
There actually are more cutscenes within the game, in between the first and final TOD cutscenes. I never understood why you couldn't watch them in the film viewer.
3:02 - Vader proves once more why he's one of the biggest, baddest SOBs in the history of everything. Woah. First time I see Thrawn in action. He really is awesome. Thanks for the video.
I'm sure it'll be in Star Wars The Bad Batch season 2 Star Wars Andor season 2 Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 Star Wars Jedi Survivor(Jedi Fallen Order 2) Star Wars Squadrons 2 Star Wars Rogue Squadron Star Wars The Mandalorian season 3 Star Wars The Book of Boba Fett season 2 Star Wars Ahsoka season 1
Such a great game, but it definitely separated the adults from the kiddies...save points? HA! Blow the last five seconds of the mission and you get to fly the entire mission AGAIN! You could hear my swearing for blocks around.
One of the greatest games ever made in my opinion. Man I miss this game. They really need to remake the classic ninety's star wars games for modern gamers.
I haven't played that game before, but I know already that TIE Fighter is a great game. Finally someone showed what Imperial truly were - They weren't all bad, Rebellion was. They are terrorist in my opinion. I have a question. Can I play this on Win 7? And, is there a possibility to play it without a joystick?
this game best to fly as tie fighter, defenders advanced and missile boat, but why zaarin helping the rebels but is good graphic game as a real film like end of Episode IV New hope story.
Oh man I love this game, the empire starfighters are the best! Gotta love those VGA cutscens and midi music. I had a general midi card that upgraded the synthesized midi to real instruments.
for those interested, the star destroyer bridge at 1:15 comes straight from a production painting by mcquarrie. modified, but it's the same (concept painting, not the actual matte painting used in the wide shot in ESB)
I still play this game. I haven't beat it yet, but I'm hoping too soon. Best Star Wars game ever (although I love X-Wing too, as well as Battlefront and Empire at War). Has the best plot of any of Star Wars game, and the best missions. I just love it!
I must have seen all these in my youth but don't remember. What I do remember is having such a great time playing them. We did not need any new movies, we needed more of these games!
stilly question but if the emperor gave told vader his plans before retrun of the jedi. how come in return of the jedi vader seemed obvlious to the emperors plans. can u say contirived.
And also the sudden release of Enemies of the Empire only for the Collector's CD-ROM Edition. Oh, boy, I won't be surprised if some players were a bit angry that it had to be a, in these times, "Special Edition DLC exclusive".
Was that the Mission where you are in a Tie Interceptor clearing a mine field and your wingmen turn on you and you transfer power to engines and rush to the Frigate? Or am I totally wrong? Yeah, Shift R was my best friend too. So what if we didn't have shields and couldn't hyper out of there(In the early missions where all we had where T/F, T/B, T/I) we always had other squads to fight with us. Wasn't like X-wing where they only sent out 2-6 fighters out on a mission.
What are you talking about? The Empire was always good. They had the better ships, better resources, fancy simulators and whatnot. Compared to when you were playing X-Wing, you had no simulators and had to go to various proving grounds for training. The rebels didn't even have the damn courtesy to tell you when you failed a mission.
Boy do I still miss this game. It was really ahead of its time. They need to make a newer version of it so it can work with the modern Macs and PCs. Gotta love the music.
this game kicked so much ass its not even funny. #1 flight shooter of all time, followed closely by the original wing commander. Total awesomeness. Wished long ass games like this were still around. Now its all MMORPGs and the same repetitive shooter over n over. Long live the grandfathers of gaming.
