TIED TEST 1986 India vs Australia - the 2nd tied test match in history - THE COMPLETE MATCH

It must count as one of the most dramatic last overs in the stories history of Test cricket. Ravi Shastri and Maninder Singh in the middle. The Australians all around the bat. Greg Matthews in a sweater in the sweltering Madras heat with the ball.
Shastri took two and one to level the scores, and then Maninder had to see off three balls, or try and get a single to win the game. With one ball to go, Vikram Raju raised his finger to an appeal for lbw that everyone - including the Australians - felt had hit bat first. It didn’t. An Indian win it wasn’t, but an even better, more memorable result was achieved: Only the second tied Test in history. 30 years on!
Since test cricket began in 1877, only two matches have ended in a tie. The first in 1960 between Australia and the West Indies in Brisbane is universally regarded as the tied test. The 'other' tied test played in Madras between India and Australia in 1986 really is the 'Forgotten Tie'. Australian great Bob Simpson, who played a key role in both matches, believes Madras to have been the tougher test, given that the game was played in temperatures that hovered around 40° degree Celsius and 80 per cent humidity! The physical toll on the players was immense. Dean Jones lost 7kgs during an epic innings of 210 over eight hours and was taken to hospital and placed on an intravenous drip. Simpson, Jones, Allan Border, David Boon, Steve Waugh, Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri are just some of the luminaries who tell how they battled for cap and country over five grueling days in appalling heat and humidity in the cauldron that was the Chidambaram Stadium in September 1986.
Indeed it can be persuasively argued the Madras tie could lay claim to being the greatest match in 129 years of test cricket.
India faced an emerging Australian side with the attitude, cricket nous and sheer stubbornness to succeed. Australia faced the fierce, crowded concrete MA Chidambaram Stadium as well as a star studded Indian team. Madras Magic - Tied test of 1986.

The last ball scenario: Shastri blatantly lies that he didn't see the umpire's finger going up and by the time he turned around, the finger had already gone up and come down. But the video shows (in slow motion) that the finger was up for a long time and Shastri saw it for a considerable period of time!
@devidasborkar7402
@devidasborkar7402 6 месяцев назад
Must be Shastri is trying to convey the quick and useless decision by an umpire. Australians have talked about this clearly. A mistake of an umpire can be understood as he is also a human being. But, the confidence to give wrong decision , so quickly,can’t be understood. This kind of behaviour has only been seen when it’s pointed blank. Certainly, this was not the case. Hope you understand.

Trust me; all Australians and Indians involved, that this is NOT a forgotten Test, or tie. I've always remembered that heroic knock from Dean Jones, as well as the fact that it was, quite simply, an extraordinary Test. By the way; i speak as an Englishman, and, therefore, a whinging Pom, and i was nearly 16 years old at the time. Either way, and by either team, an amazing feat, and truly, great cricket. Thank you!!! M. Xx

Can't blame the Aussies for not being able to tolerate the heat. I stay just 300 kms from Chennai and can't handle the heat. Imagine playing 5 x 9 hrs of cricket ? What Aussies could have done is get acclimatized to Indian playing conditions...get here a month or two earlier, stroll around the streets, get used to the spicy foods, get a tan on, play with the locals..all in all. It was simply a mammoth determination to succeed that ensured Aussies, particularly jones & boon to score hundreds.

I watched the match from D stand from ball one. Aussies deserved the tie result for sure even though the LBW decision was wrong. Aussies are the one who drove the match; who else would have declared the innings at that stage. The declaration decision should have been made only after the end of the play on 4th day as they were not in any hurry to score the runs.

@sred5856 2 года назад
It is not clear from the view that Maninder was outside off at the time of impact. We have only 1 view of this whole sequence and and everything one must visibly see is fully blocked by the bowler. There is also a report that the ball might have hit the back leg which would be more inline to stumps - but that doesnt look to be the case from this lousy angle. There was certainly plenty of movement by Maninder after the ball impacts. DRS obviously needs the right views and if re-simulate, it might be a different story. All the edge to the bat appears nonsense. The best person to evaluate was the umpire and he felt it was LBW - a rare bipartisan umpire of those days. No wonder he never umpired long after
