You get what you vote for and if you voted Brexit because it was going to make you 'free' that frankly you deserve to be poor. If people stopped spending half their life on facebook and attempted to read a newspaper/a book every now and again,you wouldn't end up a unemployed man in your mid twenties spouting shit about a new world order and claiming people are going to put chips into you. John Harris is good at making an ordinary housing estate look a lot more bleak than it actually is. But I like watching these videos a lot despite that. Excellent stuff for the most part.

Davide Le Dingue the village I live in had two pubs. The Compasses and the Swan. The compasses has more or less been hollow for years as it constantly changed hands and tried to make itself into a restaurant. The Swan hung on the village pub but, due to COVID, finally shut its doors. And now the village feels like nothing other than a settlement around a coop. With no real heart to it anymore.

Thanks for coming up to shine a spotlight on artists, venues and the Midlands in general, John & John! Followed the series for a long time and found that it's the only thing that properly explores how attitudes and resentment has been shifting in the last 10 years, as well as the disconnect between the capital and the rest of the country. Very weird but an honour to actually be in one!

That ending was bang on, I've always seen conspiracy theories as like a religion, an easier way for people who feel powerless to explain something complex, and that's why there's usually bits of truth in them somewhere. Loved this!

It's mad though. They thought if they voted Brexit all the closed down 1960s industries would suddenly reappear. It was all driven by hatred of immigrants. If you asked people why they were voting leave they always said immigration. They've been deluded into thinking immigrants are taking all the jobs and houses and benefits. Now this Covid thing is even worse. Never mind 2 million plus people being killed by it. If you've not died from Covid but you have lost your job then it's easy to say no lockdown but there's no empathy at all for other people. The idea my job matters more than other people's actual lives.

I left school in 1980, a dead eyed comprehensive in a dying Midlands town. I've winged it with a few breaks in theatre, music and conferencing. Regardless of which party was in government it's been 'jam tomorrow'. I honestly believe that the shambles this kleptocricy have made of the current pandemic and the looming brexit disaster might be the last straw. Luckily for me my maternal grandmother was born in the Republic of Ireland so I'm looking at applying for a passport as I feel trapped in a country in a race to the bottom, Singapore by the Thames. Great piece of journalism. Things really do look bleak, yes?

I LOVE your segments. Oh man, I would almost love you to come to the US for a few months and tour deep red America and urban cities. Anything but the Beltway. Get a real sense of things. Might be fascinating. Unrelated, the gent who's speaking around 12:55 has the most fascinating speaking pattern (very bouncy), and I love how our guide seems to almost adopt it too. Shows his empathy is real.

You make them sound like strange and remote places. I live 10 miles from Brownhills, the first town to be featured in the video and it's a very ordinary place, not rich but not that poor either. Its actually next to some of the wealthiest places in the county like Sutton Coldfield (which I suppose you could regard as a bad thing rather than a good thing).

@@albionpatterns3986 the death rate has declined sharply now thanks to lockdown and vaccines. The vaccine rollout which started in December couldn't have had time to make enough of a difference by January, it takes about 12 weeks to get 2 doses and get full protection. People mixed too much over December which accounts for the high death rate in January. (Deaths caused by Covid 19 transmitted by close contact.)

What are the chances of suffocating exactly, when most people only have a mild-moderate disease. Check our Dr Mike Yeadon for information on pre-existing T-Cell immunity to this virus. The odds of you suffocating are extremely slim.

Case death rate is officially 2% in the US (Johns Hopkins data). Either way it is still a higher death rate than all the jobs you don't want to dirty your dainty hands with because they are risky. But go on then, think it's nothing, I think it's a good option to clear the gene pool.

I am Brazilian ! I behold a lot of cracking -down and extreme woe around the world . . . About the United Kingdom , several workers as registered employees, self-employees,commerciants , artists, storekeepers,entrepreneurs etc . . . lost their wages besides their families have found out of extreme colapse . . . I presume ,a plenty of homeless over there without or within governamental supporting !😢

This documentary whilst exploring an important story only ever seeks out one side of a story in an area, is it representative? it was dreary. Lots of us are very lucky to have kept jobs and worked from home and i would never seek to dismiss the importance of the story of those struggling, but changes have a positive side too, you spoke with the impact on the central sandwich shop, why not go and speak to commuters when you were in Marple? People who for decades have had to cram on to delayed, expensive and unreliable dead end rail services to a job which they could have done from home a decade ago? Will they be using marple cafe's, shops and the pub you featured more after the pandemic?

Im sorry but you can't compare Ancoats with a Collyhurst council estate, it looks nice because the developers will get returns from high cost apartments. Bloke complains theres no local shops, whats the bet they use a supermarket and Amazon.

Ancoats had nothing going for it until a few years ago, it was just post-industrial wasteland. Now it's completely different. The point he's making about Collyhurst is that developers have got their eye on it too as it's so close to the city centre. Nothing has happened yet but when it does who is going to profit from it? And what happens to the people living there now. If you haven't already watch Manctopia on iPlayer, goes into it in a fair bit.

Having watched a number of these a few months ago and finding them first rate, I’m now having second thoughts. Go to absolutely any city in the Western Hemisphere and you would have no difficulty in finding similar places and problems - be it today, 10 or even 20 years ago. Are there absolutely no bright spots anywhere nearby? Seek and ye shall find - depending on what you are looking for. For starters, people on foot summoned at random hardly represent a cross-section of the population. And the doleful music certainly seems purposefully chosen. Is it really doom and gloom everywhere?

Just because a few software developers, managers, accountants and real estate agents were able to do their jobs from the comfort of their homes, doesn't mean that the rest of the country is fine. Those jobs that you refer to are the minority of the work force

@@MrJason005 Nowhere do I refer to jobs. However, as you’ve mentioned the subject, the population of the metropolitan area of Manchester in 2018 was 3.3 million. In the unlikely event that these are all software developers, managers, accountants and real estate agents all working from home, the astoundingly bleak picture painted here remains moot. The question remains: just how accurate is this video and others like it in their depiction of the true extent of misery and nihilism? That is far from saying that there are not chronic problems or that great hardship exists.

@@adscri There are pockets of prosperity, you're right. Take places like NJ in the US. One moment you're in Westfield, one of the best places to live in the country, and in 10 minutes you could be in Elizabeth or Linden, which are on the opposite spectrum. It's really parallel universes at this point. No matter what county. Which is representative of the true reality? There's no such thing.

The most honest report I've watched this year, guys keep doing what your doing, and lets make sure those in Westminster at least see this. I know they won't act on it, they haven't in the last 10 years of government, and they wont in the future, but those in Westminster should be made to see what their lies and decision making has created. As for the rest of us, I fear it's up to us to change things, this government wont help. Change in our communities can only come from the people living there which sounds impossible, but it's the only way people of the UK can break free from the madness of Westminster.

The most important thing is re-establishing social connections. Keeping people apart is extremely harmful to their mental and physical well being, especially to those that live on their own. All this talk about support bubbles is a load of crap if you don't have a household to begin with or you are unable to establish an exclusive arrangement with another person of family. Those with active social lives have stronger immune systems and all these measures in place only serve to weaken us and break our spirit. Isolation has been proven to be as harmful as smoking. I will never forgive or forget the government for harming my mental and physical health during these times.

This series illustrates how certain parts of Britain are actually 3rd world. And it's so sad to see these people suffering- but as someone from the Northwest this is quite a common sight. The failures we see here aren't just due to 10 years of Tory policies but neglect over the decades. However, the Tories certainly exacerbated the problem.

I feel so sad for them. They have been left behind in education, employment, infrastructure ect. I find it mind boggling anyone could believe the conspiracy theories? What makes someone go down that rabbit hole? Is it really lack of education? I wouldnt say Im the brightest bulb in the box I have to really work to get a pass mark but I appreciate experts I look for good sources.
