In todays video we are going to talk about how I feed filler rod and the importance of being able to do so in the long run. I know you can probably find many videos that show this process in more ways than I am going to show you but I want to put in my 2 cents wherever I can!
Whenever you are working on a job that requires you to weld out long joints it is important to be able to weld decently long runs without stopping so there isn't a bunch of ugly tie ins every inch. Another major benefit of being able to feed filler rod while TIG welding is that you are able to keep your hands away from the heat and make gloves last much longer.
As soon as you push filler rod for the first time you are going to be extremely satisfied and become much more comfortable when it comes to welding, Especially on aluminum!
As always, Thank you for watching everyone!

How many of you struggle with feeding filler rod?

HourGlassFab always struggle with it. Really new to welding but trying to pick up good habits/techniques from the start. Cheers for the vid

I start out doing ok, but then have a brain fart or 12 and can't get my timing back. I'm trying to rush for some reason. It's a very hard habit to kick.

You touched on what I feel is a very important subject.I'm an old retired pipe welder and think most of the young guys need to pay more attention to how they feed rod.You showed a little bit,talked a lot,but if you could continue on the subject I believe you would be doing a great service to the young guys out there,thanks!

Sir. Your videos are excellent quality. Absolutely a blessing to have kind generous people like you offering all this free entertaining content to the globe. Keep up the awesome content brother. P.s. I started up my tig welder this weekend and took a shot and tagged you in it. Couldn’t have done it without.

Good video. I agree it's a learned skill, and the only way to get better is practice, practice, practice.. Crazy thing is I'm left handed and I feed with my left hand and torch with right. Seems to work for me, but everyone is different. I try to switch feeder hands sometimes to force myself to learn but seem to always return back.

Thanks Brad. I was holding the rod the same way, but feeding with the two fingers and holding the rod with my thumb. My accuracy sucked. Haven’t tried your method yet while actually welding but trying your way with a piece of rod feels way more comfortable and accurate. Thanks again for what you bring to our craft. @ForrevverEndeavors

Dave DavidM Thank you so much for the support! I appreciate you watching the video man. Yeah, I totally know what you’re talking about! I used to do the same thing. Also try this: instead of pushing the rod into the puddle.. just feed rod without dabbing and then add that bit to the puddle before you load your next round.. rinse and repeat! 🙌🏻

Good video. I feed filler rod the same way. Man at first I struggled hard but I did practice a little while watching tv learned that from one of Jody’s videos a while back. But I really noticed a difference when I got a better pair of gloves 🧤 mad a big difference like you mentioned. Just takes practice as with anything. Good video I’m sure it will help out a lot of people 🙏👊🏻

Yep. That’s how I do it. Agreed, you just have to put in the time practicing. You’ll never get good at something you don’t do.

Just bought an AHP Alpha Tig, I am havi g problems feeding rod and being consistent. Seems that my rob balls or melts before I even get it to the puddle. I really want to get good at aluminum but after a few hours of practice it is kicking my butt. Thank you for the vids you way of explaining things really helps me learn the processes.
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 6 лет назад
Brian TVP/SWR the rod balling before it gets to the puddle is just due to an incorrect or to angled torch angle.. you’re directing heat at your filler rod and it will liquify before you can add it. Just keep practicing and correct your torch angle and you will be golden!

You find out quick correct form is a really critical aspect of Tig welding. I think part of the problem for some of us is that we have been spoiled by the ease of using a wire machine for so many years it has come back to haunt us! Thank you for the reply! Keep up the good videos buddy, we will keep on watching and learning.

Great video, thank you for the tips! I feel like I lose accuracy when feeding, so it’s hard to force myself to keep doing it. Once step backward, two steps forward.....is what I keep telling myself. Oh, and I know you were just making a comparison, but please don’t ever ever ever go scuba diving with an oxygen tank. You’ll only make it to about 20 feet before convulsing and dying of oxygen toxicity.

I took a strange way while learning. I had trouble holding steady while feeding so I stick the rod in the puddle, back my heat and torch back and regrip while the rod is stuck then carry on as if I was normal. Nobody even knows what a dork I am.

How many inches per minute do you think you feed aluminum? I have a paralyzed left hand so I’m designing a Tig rod feeder for myself. I’m thinking 12-16 IPM?

How do you get a grip on the filler rod to push it? Very slippery with gloves on
@themostexcellentadventure5473

That’s my biggest problem. I always end up contaminating the electrode. I usually just lay the rod down and consume it as i go. Just need more practice.
@hourglassingenuity103
@hourglassingenuity103 6 лет назад
Elysium practice is all it will take man. Like I said in a comment below.. try and just feed rod and then add what you fed into the puddle.. rinse and repeat. You can just load your hand and then add that to the puddle accurately instead of trying to feed directly into the puddle. Try that and then when you can do that.. you will be able to accurately feed into the puddle.

Excellent subject. I do a bunch of SS work on framing it’s cramped. 1”-2” Sq. tubing, Gussets, supports and lots of angles. Consistently INCONSISTENT. How many factors come into play and how to tackle??

I don’t hold my filler rod that way. I rotate my hand and feed it through my pointer and middle finger. My thumb, ring and pinky fingers stabilize the rod. I have much more steady and consistent feeds. I didn’t invent this method. I stole it from kainekid aka rush kaine.

HourGlassFab for me the faster the timing the more consistent i am. So as you know you can really feed the filler fast with al, and that makes it easier to me
