Been doing aluminum for a year or so and I always have Jodie’s video playing in my head making sure the puddles always looks like his. And let me tell you, no instructor I’ve ever had welds aluminum like him. I’ve learned more from his videos than I have watching instructors in person.

That slight lift of the torch while adding filler wire is the best trick ever on aluminum to keep the tungsten clean.

Just got my xl tig finger. I had to order one after I borrowed one from one of the instructors (Kevin) lent me his in welding class. It made a huge difference for me, not just in keeping the heat at bay but allowing my hand to glide and get a smoother flow when guiding the tig.

Probably the best all around welder! I started watching your videos 5 or 6 years ago and I think very few people can handle all 3 processes (mig, tig an stick welding) like you can! You are "a league" of your own!

Good to see you again in 2018. I taught myself TIG welding in 1997 and still love the artform. I see Bob Moffatt watches you too. All the best from Australia. 03JAN2018 P.S. You're a good presenter

I love your videos, they have helped me a lot. One of the problems I have been having is welding thin aluminum to thicker aluminum. The other day i was welding some 1/2" angle 1/8 thick to some 0.06 sheet, and while I got it to weld i was getting some really bad warping. I would love a video showing some techniques on how to do something like this better.

Yeah it's a pita, I have a simple 26 air cooled torch and it gets really toasty on the torch hand, I often have to stop because it's too hot. I mostly weld square tubing so sometime just wearing a bigger glove on that hand does it.

As always, great video! Makes me want to get out and practice. I've been trying to learn to weld by watching your videos, and after feeling a bit fristrated and not being able to make the beads I felt like I should be making, started rewatching your videos. It wasn't until last night that I heard you saw to keep the filler rod in the gas. I kept having problems with rod just balling up and dripping. This made me realize I don't really have any idea how to know how much rod to add, if it makes a difference as to what angle I feed the rod, if I am trying to feel anything while adding. Any chance you could make a video dedicated to feeding technique? (I searched and didn't find any, so forgive me if this already exists)

how much distortion did you get on that plate? I personally have never welded aluminum but it strikes me that if this was on a steel plate it would have distorted much more! great video by the way, I have only used tig to braze brass and bronze but that clear cup would have been so useful, also realized that I've been using way too much shielding gas. I am learning so much with these videos! thank you, happy new year!

Can someone explain to me why aluminium tig should be done on AC , BUT you can weld aluminium with mig on DC? I understand about cleaning action vs putting heat into the workpiece that makes sense, but why doesn't that apply to dc mig? Love your videos jody. Have you considered writing a book ?

Happy New year Jody. Thanks for all you do. I have a suggestion for 2018. How about a repair / build up that gets machined. The whole process. I am more of a Millwright. Knowing and seeing the different materials, the catches and issues for different repairs etc would be cool. It could be Mig build up VS Tig buildup VS Arc weld buildup. It might be interesting, maybe a joint venture with Superior welding. Just throwing out ideas. Love the Videos. Love the podcast and i love my TIG finger (yes an original) Rob T

Hi guys so at what age did every one become a welder or as I should say get into a welding job or started schooling? I am 21 years of age and was a apprentice construction worker at the age of 16 and because of my age I only did horizontal and worked with many different types of heavy machinery. Yet it was nothing I ever enjoyed until the welders came in every day at certain time and cleared us out due to fumes and not every one able to wear a face mask. I was way to young to understand what they were doing. Yet always saw them changing from mig,tig,stick,smaw it was very interesting and dope as fuck to me. After some time though I had to move from my construction job due to my family being military. I am starting to see many companies or small garages wanting certification or schooling diploma so now I am asking how is every one doing in there career as of right now I have not welded in 2 years not once and I am super eager to become a student of a school or company and just want some honest no bullshit answers on how everyone got started cheers!

Jodi I have the same CK 17 torch set up for my stainless jobs on my Dunasty 350. I run water cooled for all aluminum due to higher amps. But running the CK @ 80 amps DC for 12 ga stainless, the torch gets smoking hot. How can you run aluminum without it getting too hot to hold?
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 6 лет назад
the torch got a bit warm but not too bad. When I film stuff, it makes for a lot more rest time between beads. I definitely need to get a water cooler for my dynasty 280. Its on my list for 2018 upgrades

This is late, but - It is important for people to understand that the emissivity of surfaces varies wildly - Most of the cheaper IR thermometers are factory set to ~0.95 (water emissivity is ~0.95) - Water 0.95 - 0.963 Iron polished 0.14 - 0.38 Iron, plate rusted red 0.61 Iron, dark gray surface 0.31 Iron, rough ingot 0.87 - 0.95 Aluminum Commercial sheet 0.09 Aluminum Foil 0.04 Aluminum Commercial Sheet 0.09 Aluminum Heavily Oxidized 0.2 - 0.31 Aluminum Highly Polished 0.039 - 0.057 Aluminum Anodized 0.77 Aluminum Rough 0.07 So using an IR thermometer can give bad readings unless you can change the thermometer's emissivity setting. And we humans tend to believe digital numbers too much.

@rambobaby8739
@rambobaby8739 6 лет назад
I was using a 280 on my last assignment. I fell in love with that machine even tho it isn't nearly as versatile as my everlast. But it's really not enough machine if you're planning on doing serious aluminum welding. I had to use an AO rig to preheat most of the 1/2" plate that I was working with. these were 4" X 8" base plates for handrails. I did actually weld 3 of those things without the preheat but it took forever and looked like crapola. That welder really isn't designed for aluminum that thick. Anything up to 3/8" welds like a dream though.
